P0470 Exhaust Pressure Sensor "A" Circuit Malfunction

The P0470 OBD-II trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a problem with the Exhaust Pressure Sensor “A” circuit.

The exhaust pressure sensor provides the ECM with information about pressure in the exhaust system. This information can be important for controlling EGR operation, turbocharger management, DPF regeneration and overall exhaust emissions, particularly on diesel engines.

Unlike P0472 or P0473, which indicate a low or high sensor signal, P0470 is a general circuit malfunction code. It tells us that the ECM has detected something wrong with the sensor circuit, but the code itself does not identify whether the sensor, wiring, connector, pressure tube or another part of the system is responsible.

What Is the Exhaust Pressure Sensor?

The Exhaust Pressure Sensor measures pressure within the exhaust system and converts that pressure into an electrical signal.

On many engines, especially diesels, the sensor is connected to the exhaust system through a small pressure tube. The tube carries exhaust pressure to the sensor, while the sensor sends an electrical signal to the ECM.

The computer can then use this information to determine how the exhaust system is behaving.

Depending on the vehicle, exhaust pressure information may be used for:

  • EGR control

  • Turbocharger control

  • DPF regeneration

  • Exhaust restriction monitoring

  • Exhaust temperature management

  • Emissions control

The exact role of the sensor varies between manufacturers and engine designs.

What Does “Circuit Malfunction” Mean?

The word “circuit” is important in P0470.

The ECM is not necessarily saying that the exhaust pressure itself is incorrect.

Instead, it has detected a problem with the electrical circuit or signal coming from the exhaust pressure sensor.

The fault could involve:

  • The sensor

  • Sensor power supply

  • Reference voltage

  • Sensor ground

  • Signal wire

  • Connector

  • Wiring harness

  • Pressure tube

  • ECM input circuit

For this reason, replacing the sensor immediately is not always the correct solution.

Symptoms of P0470

Some vehicles may show only the Check Engine Light, while others can experience noticeable changes in engine operation.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Reduced engine power

  • Poor acceleration

  • Hesitation

  • Limp mode

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Increased exhaust emissions

  • EGR-related problems

  • DPF regeneration problems

The severity depends on how the vehicle uses the exhaust-pressure signal.

A vehicle may continue to drive almost normally if the ECM can substitute another value or temporarily ignore the faulty sensor information.

Common Causes of P0470

Faulty exhaust pressure sensor

The sensor can develop an internal electrical fault and stop producing a reliable output.

Damaged wiring

Wiring near the exhaust system is exposed to considerable heat and vibration. Melted insulation, broken wires or internal conductor damage can interrupt the sensor circuit.

Corroded connector

Water, dirt and heat can cause corrosion inside the sensor connector.

A connector may appear properly connected while one of its terminals has poor electrical contact.

Missing reference voltage

Many exhaust pressure sensors use a regulated reference voltage supplied by the ECM. If this supply is missing or incorrect, the sensor cannot produce the expected signal.

Poor sensor ground

A damaged or high-resistance ground can cause the sensor signal to become incorrect.

Damaged signal wire

An open, shorted or damaged signal wire can prevent the ECM from receiving the correct sensor information.

Blocked pressure tube

On systems using an external pressure tube, soot and carbon can accumulate inside the passage.

The sensor may then receive little or no pressure information even though the electrical portion of the sensor is functioning.

Cracked or melted pressure tube

A damaged pressure tube can leak exhaust pressure and cause an incorrect sensor reading.

Exhaust restriction

A restricted DPF, catalytic converter or exhaust system can cause abnormal exhaust-pressure conditions.

This should be considered particularly when P0470 appears with DPF or exhaust-flow-related codes.

How Is P0470 Diagnosed?

The diagnosis should begin with a complete scan of the vehicle rather than immediately replacing the sensor.

Check for other codes involving:

  • Exhaust pressure

  • EGR

  • DPF

  • Exhaust temperature

  • MAF

  • MAP

  • Turbocharger

  • Boost pressure

  • Engine air management

The additional codes can help determine whether P0470 is an isolated electrical problem or part of a larger exhaust-management issue.

Freeze-frame data can also show what the engine was doing when the fault was detected.

Check the Exhaust Pressure Sensor Live Data

The sensor's live-data value should be monitored with a suitable scan tool.

The reading should behave logically as engine speed and load change.

For example, increasing engine load generally changes exhaust flow and pressure.

If the sensor reading remains fixed, disappears, jumps unexpectedly, or does not react to changes in engine operation, the sensor circuit becomes suspicious.

This test can provide useful information before any parts are replaced.

Inspect the Wiring and Connector

The sensor and its wiring should be carefully inspected.

Look for:

  • Melted insulation

  • Broken wires

  • Chafing

  • Corrosion

  • Loose terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Water intrusion

  • Oil contamination

  • Poor previous repairs

Particular attention should be paid to wiring running close to the turbocharger, exhaust manifold, DPF or exhaust piping.

High temperatures can damage wiring without creating an obvious external break.

Check Power, Reference and Ground

The sensor's electrical circuits should be tested according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Depending on the sensor design, there may be:

  • Reference voltage

  • Ground

  • Signal

The technician should verify that the reference voltage is present and stable and that the ground circuit has acceptable resistance and voltage drop.

A ground that looks good visually can still cause problems when the circuit is operating under real conditions.

Inspect the Pressure Tube

If the vehicle uses a separate pressure tube, it should be inspected before condemning the sensor.

A tube can become blocked with soot or carbon.

It can also become:

  • Cracked

  • Melted

  • Kinked

  • Disconnected

  • Restricted

This is especially relevant on diesel engines.

A blocked pressure tube can prevent the sensor from receiving the pressure it is supposed to measure.

Check for Exhaust Restrictions

If the electrical circuit appears healthy, the actual exhaust system should be considered.

A restricted DPF or catalytic converter can create abnormal exhaust pressure.

This becomes more important when the vehicle also has:

  • DPF warning lights

  • Regeneration problems

  • Reduced engine power

  • Excessive smoke

  • DPF differential-pressure codes

  • Exhaust temperature codes

The pressure sensor may be reporting a real exhaust problem rather than creating the problem itself.

P0470 and DPF Regeneration

Modern diesel engines depend heavily on accurate exhaust-pressure information during DPF operation.

During regeneration, the ECM monitors several parameters to determine whether the required conditions are being achieved.

If the exhaust pressure sensor signal is unavailable or unreliable, the ECM may alter or disable certain regeneration strategies.

This can lead to additional DPF-related symptoms or fault codes.

For this reason, ignoring P0470 for a long period can potentially result in a larger emissions-system problem.

P0470 and EGR Operation

Exhaust pressure is also important for EGR control on many diesel engines.

The ECM may use exhaust pressure together with MAF, MAP and other sensor information to determine whether the expected amount of exhaust gas is entering the intake.

If the exhaust pressure signal is incorrect, the ECM may calculate EGR flow incorrectly.

This can result in additional EGR or airflow-related codes.

P0470 and Turbocharger Operation

Turbocharger operation can also influence exhaust pressure.

If the turbocharger, boost-control system or exhaust system has a problem, exhaust pressure may not behave as expected.

At the same time, an incorrect exhaust-pressure signal can affect the ECM's air-management calculations.

Therefore, when P0470 appears together with boost or turbocharger codes, the systems should be investigated together.

P0470 Does Not Automatically Mean the Sensor Is Bad

Consider a simple example.

The exhaust pressure sensor is working correctly, but the pressure tube is completely blocked with soot.

The sensor cannot receive the correct pressure information.

Replacing the sensor would leave the real problem untouched.

The same applies to the electrical side.

A perfectly good sensor connected to a damaged signal wire can still produce P0470.

This is why sensor diagnosis and circuit diagnosis should be treated as two parts of the same job.

No Universal Sensor Voltage or Resistance

There is no single voltage or resistance value that applies to every exhaust pressure sensor.

Different vehicles use different sensor designs, reference voltages and signal strategies.

Measurements should always be compared with the manufacturer's technical specifications and wiring diagram.

Guessing a universal “normal” voltage can lead to an incorrect diagnosis.

P0470 vs P0472

P0470 – Exhaust Pressure Sensor “A” Circuit Malfunction

This is a general fault involving the sensor circuit.

P0472 – Exhaust Pressure Sensor “A” Circuit Low Input

This indicates that the ECM is receiving a signal that is lower than the expected range.

Therefore, P0470 is broader, while P0472 provides a more specific indication of a low-input condition.

P0470 vs P0473

P0473 – Exhaust Pressure Sensor “A” Circuit High

This indicates an abnormally high sensor signal.

P0470 does not specifically identify the signal as high or low.

P0470 vs P0474

P0474 – Exhaust Pressure Sensor “A” Circuit Intermittent / Erratic

This indicates that the sensor signal is unstable or intermittent.

P0470 is a more general circuit-malfunction description and may be stored when the ECM detects a sensor-circuit problem that does not fit the more specific high, low or intermittent categories.

Can You Drive With P0470?

If the vehicle drives normally and there are no DPF warnings, severe power loss or other serious symptoms, short-term driving may be possible.

However, P0470 should not simply be ignored.

An unreliable exhaust-pressure signal can affect EGR operation, DPF regeneration, turbocharger management and emissions control.

If the vehicle enters limp mode, loses significant power, develops a DPF warning, produces excessive smoke or repeatedly fails regeneration, it should be diagnosed promptly.

How Is P0470 Repaired?

The repair depends on what the testing reveals.

Possible repairs include:

  • Replacing the exhaust pressure sensor

  • Repairing damaged wiring

  • Repairing a short or open circuit

  • Restoring the reference voltage

  • Repairing the sensor ground

  • Replacing a damaged connector

  • Cleaning a blocked pressure tube

  • Replacing a cracked or melted pressure hose

  • Repairing an exhaust restriction

  • Diagnosing a DPF problem

  • Correcting an EGR-related fault

  • Repairing a turbocharger or air-management problem

The ECM should only become a primary suspect after the sensor, wiring, power supply, ground and related mechanical systems have been properly checked.

Understanding P0470 in Real-World Diagnosis

P0470 is best viewed as a starting point rather than a parts-replacement instruction.

The code tells you that the ECM has a problem with the exhaust-pressure sensor circuit, but you still need to determine whether the problem is electrical, mechanical or related to the pressure being measured.

A logical diagnostic sequence is:

Check all DTCs → examine live data → inspect the sensor → inspect wiring and connector → verify power/reference/ground → inspect the pressure tube → check actual exhaust pressure and restrictions.

That approach makes it much easier to identify the real cause of P0470 and avoid replacing a good sensor unnecessarily.
