P0550 Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction

The P0550 trouble code indicates that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a malfunction in the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor/switch circuit.

Unlike P0552 and P0553, which specifically indicate a low or high electrical input, P0550 is a broader circuit malfunction code. The control module knows that the PSP signal or circuit is not behaving as expected, but the fault does not necessarily fit a simple high-voltage or low-voltage condition.

The problem can therefore be electrical, sensor-related, wiring-related, or, depending on the vehicle's design, related to the way hydraulic steering pressure is being detected.

What Is the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Sensor/Switch?

The PSP sensor or switch provides the engine control system with information about the load placed on the engine by the power steering system.

In a conventional hydraulic power steering system, the pump is mechanically driven by the engine. When the steering wheel is turned, particularly at low vehicle speed, hydraulic pressure rises and the pump requires additional engine torque.

Without compensation, this additional load can cause:

  • Engine RPM to drop

  • Rough idle

  • Engine hesitation

  • Engine stalling in extreme cases

The ECU can use the PSP signal to recognize this increased load and adjust engine operation accordingly.

Depending on the vehicle, the PSP device may be:

  • A device whose information is processed by another control module

Therefore, the exact diagnostic procedure must be based on the vehicle's wiring diagram and system architecture.

What Does P0550 Actually Mean?

P0550 essentially means:

The ECM/PCM cannot reliably interpret the expected PSP sensor/switch circuit signal.

This could happen because the circuit is:

  • Open

  • Shorted

  • Intermittent

  • Electrically unstable

  • Receiving an implausible signal

  • Connected to a defective sensor or switch

It does not necessarily mean that the power steering pump itself has failed.

This distinction is important because the PSP circuit and the hydraulic steering circuit perform two different jobs.

The power steering system can provide normal steering assistance while the ECU receives an incorrect PSP signal.

P0550 vs. P0552 and P0553

These codes are closely related, but their diagnostic emphasis is different.

P0550 – PSP Sensor/Switch Circuit Malfunction

A general malfunction has been detected in the PSP circuit.

P0552 – PSP Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Input

The control module is detecting a signal that is electrically too low.

P0553 – PSP Sensor/Switch Circuit High Input

The control module is detecting a signal that is electrically too high.

P0554 – PSP Sensor/Switch Circuit Intermittent

The circuit or signal is behaving intermittently.

With P0550, the technician should therefore avoid assuming that the signal is specifically high or low. The first task is to determine what type of circuit the vehicle uses and what abnormal behavior the ECU is detecting.

Symptoms of P0550

The driver may experience:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Rough idle while turning the steering wheel

  • Idle speed dropping during parking maneuvers

  • Engine hesitation when steering at low speed

  • Engine stalling under heavy steering load

  • Slightly unstable idle

  • Reduced idle compensation

  • Power steering warning on some vehicles

  • Cruise control deactivation on some vehicles

  • No noticeable drivability symptoms

A vehicle can store P0550 without producing any obvious steering problem.

This is because the PSP sensor is primarily providing information to the engine-control system. It is not necessarily responsible for creating hydraulic steering assistance.

Why Can P0550 Affect the Engine?

Consider the engine at idle.

When the steering wheel is not being turned, the hydraulic load from the power steering system may be relatively low.

When the driver turns the steering wheel while parking, hydraulic pressure can increase considerably. The pump then consumes more mechanical power from the engine.

The ECU can compensate for this additional load if it receives the correct PSP information.

If the PSP circuit malfunctions, the ECU may not correctly anticipate or recognize the additional load.

The result can be a temporary RPM drop or unstable idle.

The effect varies considerably between vehicle manufacturers.

Common Causes of P0550

1. Failed PSP sensor or pressure switch

The sensor/switch itself is one of the obvious possibilities.

A switch can develop worn or contaminated contacts, while a variable sensor can develop internal electrical faults.

However, the code alone is not enough to prove that the sensor has failed.

2. Open circuit

A broken signal, reference, power, or ground wire can interrupt communication between the PSP device and the control module.

An open circuit may be caused by:

  • Broken wiring

  • Pulled terminals

  • Corrosion

  • Poor connector engagement

  • Internal wire damage

3. Short circuit

A signal wire can short to:

  • Ground

  • Battery voltage

  • Another electrical circuit

The exact resulting code depends on the system design.

4. Damaged connector

The PSP connector should be inspected for:

  • Corrosion

  • Loose terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Water intrusion

  • Power steering fluid contamination

  • Broken locking tabs

  • Poor terminal tension

A connector does not have to look badly damaged to create an electrical fault.

5. Damaged wiring harness

The harness around the steering pump and engine compartment is exposed to considerable heat and vibration.

It may also be affected by power steering fluid leaks.

Wiring can therefore become brittle, chafed, or internally damaged.

6. Reference-voltage problem

A voltage-drop test is more useful than simply checking resistance with the circuit disconnected.

8. Hydraulic pressure problem

On applicable systems, abnormal hydraulic pressure can influence the operation of a pressure switch or sensor.

Possible causes can include:

  • Failing power steering pump

  • Incorrect fluid

  • Restricted hydraulic passages

  • Excessive pump pressure

  • Steering-system mechanical problems

But hydraulic problems should not be assumed before the electrical circuit has been tested.

9. ECM/PCM problem

A control-module fault is possible but should normally be considered only after the PSP circuit, sensor, wiring, and power/ground supplies have been verified.

How to Diagnose P0550

The best diagnosis begins with the scan tool.

Check whether P0550 is:

  • Current

  • Pending

  • Stored

  • Intermittent

Also record the freeze-frame data if available.

Pay attention to:

  • Engine RPM

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine temperature

  • System voltage

  • Throttle position

  • Steering-related data

  • Other stored trouble codes

If P0550 occurs specifically during low-speed steering, that information can be extremely useful.

If it occurs at random times while the steering wheel is not being moved, an electrical wiring or connector problem becomes more suspicious.

Identify the Exact PSP Circuit

Before measuring anything, determine how the vehicle's PSP system is designed.

A variable sensor may have:

  • Reference voltage

  • Ground

  • Signal

A simple pressure switch may instead have a much simpler circuit.

Some vehicles can also transmit steering-related information through a control module or communication network.

This means a generic three-wire sensor test should not be performed blindly on every vehicle.

The manufacturer's wiring diagram should be used to identify the actual circuit.

Inspect the Connector and Harness

Start with a physical inspection.

Look carefully for:

  • Chafed insulation

  • Broken wires

  • Loose terminals

  • Corrosion

  • Fluid contamination

  • Harnesses touching hot components

  • Harnesses pulled tight

  • Damaged connector locks

Pay particular attention to areas where the harness moves with engine vibration.

A wire can look perfect while being broken internally.

Test Power, Reference, and Ground

If the vehicle uses a variable PSP sensor, verify the electrical supply according to manufacturer specifications.

Do not simply assume that the reference voltage should be a particular value on every vehicle.

Check the:

Reference circuit

Is the correct reference voltage present?

Ground circuit

Does the sensor have a stable ground with minimal voltage drop?

Signal circuit

Does the signal respond correctly as steering pressure changes?

Testing all three circuits provides much more useful information than simply replacing the sensor.

Monitor the PSP Signal During Steering

This is particularly valuable with P0550.

With the engine running, monitor the relevant sensor data or electrical signal while the steering load changes.

Observe the signal with:

  • Steering centered

  • Steering turned slightly

  • Steering turned further

  • Engine idling

  • Different steering loads

A variable sensor should produce a predictable response according to the manufacturer's specifications.

A switch-based system should change state at its specified pressure threshold.

If the signal does not respond correctly, determine whether the problem originates from the sensor or the wiring.

Perform a Wiggle Test

If the fault is difficult to reproduce, gently move the PSP harness and connector while monitoring the circuit.

If the signal suddenly changes, disappears, or becomes implausible, the harness or connector becomes a strong suspect.

This is especially useful when the vehicle drives normally but repeatedly stores P0550.

Check for Shared Electrical Problems

A PSP sensor may share electrical resources with other sensors.

For example, several sensors can sometimes share a common reference or ground circuit.

If multiple sensor codes appear simultaneously, do not assume that several sensors failed at the same time.

One shorted circuit or damaged reference circuit could affect multiple components.

This is why all stored codes should be considered together.

Check Hydraulic Pressure When Appropriate

If the electrical circuit is functioning correctly but the PSP signal appears to correspond to an abnormal hydraulic condition, the power steering system may need to be pressure-tested.

A pressure gauge can help determine whether the pump is generating the pressure expected by the manufacturer.

This separates two possible scenarios:

Without this distinction, it is easy to replace a good sensor or power steering pump unnecessarily.

Can P0550 Cause Hard Steering?

Usually, P0550 by itself does not directly mean that the vehicle will lose power steering assistance.

The PSP sensor/switch generally tells the engine control system about steering-system load.

It does not necessarily control the hydraulic pressure that provides steering assistance.

However, some modern vehicles use more integrated steering-control architectures, so the effect can vary.

If the steering wheel suddenly becomes much harder to turn, the steering system itself should be diagnosed rather than assuming that P0550 is the direct cause.

Can P0550 Cause Engine Stalling?

It can contribute to stalling on vehicles that depend on PSP information for idle-load compensation.

The situation is most likely to become noticeable during:

  • Parking

  • Low-speed maneuvering

  • Full or near-full steering input

  • Engine idle

When steering load suddenly increases, the engine needs to compensate.

If the ECU does not receive valid PSP information, the engine may not respond correctly.

However, P0550 should not automatically be blamed for every idle or stalling complaint. Other engine problems must also be ruled out.

Should the Power Steering Pump Be Replaced?

Not based on P0550 alone.

The code identifies a PSP sensor/switch circuit malfunction, not a confirmed pump failure.

Replacing the pump without testing the circuit can leave the original problem untouched.

A better diagnostic sequence is:

Scan all modules → inspect the connector and wiring → identify the circuit design → test reference/power and ground → monitor the PSP signal → verify hydraulic pressure if necessary → replace the failed component.

Final Diagnostic Summary

P0550 means the ECM/PCM has detected a malfunction in the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor/switch circuit.

Unlike P0552 and P0553, the code does not tell you specifically that the signal is too low or too high. It is a broader circuit malfunction that can involve the PSP sensor or switch, wiring, connectors, reference voltage, ground, signal circuit, or—in certain systems—the hydraulic condition being monitored.

The most effective diagnosis is therefore not simply replacing the PSP sensor.

First determine what type of PSP circuit the vehicle uses. Then verify its electrical supply, ground and signal, inspect the wiring and connector, and monitor the signal while steering load changes. If the electrical side is correct, investigate the actual hydraulic pressure.

The central diagnostic question is:

Is the PSP device producing an incorrect signal, or is the circuit preventing the control module from receiving and interpreting the correct signal?

Answering that question correctly is the key to diagnosing P0550 without unnecessary parts replacement.
