P0311 Cylinder #11 Misfire Detected

P0311 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a misfire on cylinder number 11.

Unlike P0300, which indicates random or multiple-cylinder misfires, P0311 identifies a specific cylinder.

The important point is that P0311 tells you which cylinder is misfiring, not why it is misfiring.

The cause can be related to ignition, fuel delivery, air intake, compression, valve operation, wiring or engine timing. Replacing the spark plug or ignition coil without confirming the cause can therefore lead to unnecessary parts replacement.

P0311 during heavy acceleration

Pay particular attention to ignition breakdown, fuel delivery and load-related mechanical problems.

P0311 only when cold

Consider ignition, injector behavior, mixture control and mechanical sealing.

Can You Drive With P0311?

It depends on the severity of the misfire.

A mild intermittent misfire may allow the vehicle to continue operating temporarily, but it should still be diagnosed.

A severe misfire is more serious.

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the engine is shaking badly or there is a significant loss of power, continued driving can cause catalytic-converter damage because unburned fuel may enter the exhaust.

The safest approach is to diagnose the misfire before continuing to operate the vehicle under heavy load.

P0311 – Cylinder #11 Misfire Detected

The ECM has identified a misfire associated with cylinder 11.

P0300 – Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

The ECM has detected a misfire pattern affecting multiple cylinders or occurring randomly rather than consistently identifying one cylinder.

A cylinder-specific code gives the technician a more focused starting point.

P0311 vs. P0313

These codes should not be confused.

P0311 identifies a misfire on cylinder 11.

P0313 indicates a misfire detected while the fuel level is low.

If both appear together, the low fuel condition may be relevant to the misfire, but cylinder 11 should still be investigated rather than assuming the fuel level explains everything.

Final Thoughts on P0311

P0311 – Cylinder #11 Misfire Detected tells you that the ECM has detected abnormal combustion associated with cylinder 11.

It does not tell you whether the problem is the spark plug, ignition coil, injector, wiring, intake system, compression, valve train, timing or another component.

The most effective strategy is to determine whether the misfire follows a component.

If the misfire follows the ignition coil, investigate the coil.

If it follows the injector, investigate the injector.

If it remains on cylinder 11 after ignition and fuel components have been eliminated, move toward compression, leak-down, valve-train and timing diagnosis.

That approach is much more reliable than replacing several parts simply because P0311 appeared.
