P0310 Cylinder #10 Misfire Detected

The P0310 OBD-II trouble code means that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a misfire in cylinder #10.

A misfire occurs when cylinder #10 does not produce the expected combustion event. The ECM generally detects this by monitoring small changes in crankshaft speed. When one cylinder fails to produce normal power during combustion, the crankshaft slows slightly, and the control module can recognize this pattern.

P0310 identifies the affected cylinder, but it does not tell you which component has failed. The problem could be related to ignition, fuel, air supply, compression, valve operation, engine timing, or the wiring and control system.

Important: Cylinder numbering is manufacturer-specific. Do not assume that cylinder #10 is physically located in a particular position without checking the engine's service information.

What Does P0310 Mean?

The code can be broken down as follows:

  • P – Powertrain

  • 03 – Ignition/misfire-related diagnostic category

  • 10 – Cylinder #10 misfire

Unlike a general misfire code such as P0300, P0310 points specifically toward cylinder #10.

This distinction is useful because the diagnostic process can be concentrated on that cylinder first.

A P0310 code does not necessarily mean that the spark plug in cylinder #10 is defective. The ECM only knows that combustion in that cylinder is not occurring as expected. Finding the actual cause requires further testing.

What Is an Engine Misfire?

For an engine to operate correctly, each cylinder needs the correct combination of:

  • Air

  • Fuel

  • Compression

  • Ignition

  • Correct valve and ignition/injection timing

If one of these elements is missing or inadequate, combustion may become weak or fail completely.

For example, cylinder #10 may receive fuel and air normally but fail to ignite because of a weak ignition coil. Alternatively, the ignition system may be working perfectly while the cylinder has low compression because of a valve or piston problem.

This is why replacing ignition components immediately after seeing P0310 can sometimes waste money.

Common Symptoms of P0310

The symptoms depend on how severe the misfire is and whether it occurs continuously or only under particular conditions.

  • Hesitation during acceleration

If the misfire occurs only during acceleration, high RPM, or heavy engine load, the vehicle may appear to run normally during light driving.

A weak ignition coil, for example, may work reasonably well at idle but fail when cylinder pressure increases under heavy load.

A Flashing Check Engine Light Is Important

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the misfire may be severe enough to send a significant amount of unburned fuel into the exhaust system.

That fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter.

In this situation, continuing to drive the vehicle aggressively is not recommended. If the engine is shaking badly, losing substantial power, stalling, or producing a strong raw-fuel smell, the vehicle should be diagnosed as soon as possible.

What Causes P0310?

There are several possible causes.

Faulty spark plug

A worn, fouled, cracked, or incorrectly gapped spark plug can cause cylinder #10 to misfire.

If the spark plug has excessive wear, oil contamination, carbon deposits, or a damaged insulator, combustion may become unreliable.

Defective ignition coil

On engines using individual ignition coils, the coil serving cylinder #10 may be weak or defective.

A coil can sometimes pass a basic test but fail when the engine is under load. This makes intermittent misfires particularly difficult to diagnose.

Ignition wiring problem

Depending on the engine design, damaged wiring, poor connections, corrosion, or insulation problems can interrupt the ignition signal.

Faulty fuel injector

Cylinder #10 may not be receiving the correct amount of fuel.

The injector could be clogged, electrically defective, mechanically stuck, or have a wiring problem.

Fuel pressure problem

A problem with the fuel pump, pressure regulator, fuel filter, or fuel delivery system can cause insufficient fuel pressure.

However, if the same fuel-pressure problem affects multiple cylinders, P0310 may appear together with other misfire codes.

Vacuum or intake leak

An air leak close to cylinder #10 can create a mixture that is too lean for reliable combustion.

Intake manifold gasket problems are particularly relevant when the leak affects one runner or one section of the intake system.

Low compression

Mechanical problems can prevent cylinder #10 from producing normal combustion.

A synchronization problem can produce misfires, sometimes affecting several cylinders rather than cylinder #10 alone.

Wiring or connector problems

A loose connector, damaged wire, corrosion, poor ground, or intermittent electrical connection can cause an otherwise healthy component to operate incorrectly.

How Is P0310 Diagnosed?

A good diagnosis starts with determining whether the misfire is actually isolated to cylinder #10.

1. Scan for additional trouble codes

P0310 should not be considered by itself.

Look for other codes involving:

  • Ignition coils

  • Injectors

  • Fuel pressure

  • Camshaft position

  • Crankshaft position

  • Oxygen or air/fuel sensors

  • Engine timing

  • VVT

  • Other cylinder misfires

Additional codes can significantly narrow the diagnostic path.

2. Check the freeze-frame data

Freeze-frame information can show the operating conditions when P0310 was recorded.

Useful information includes:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine load

  • Coolant temperature

  • Vehicle speed

  • Throttle position

  • Fuel trims

  • Intake air information

If the code consistently appears during heavy acceleration, the diagnosis should consider components that fail under load.

3. Check cylinder #10's spark plug

Remove and inspect the plug serving cylinder #10.

Look for:

  • Excessive electrode wear

  • Carbon fouling

  • Oil contamination

  • Fuel fouling

  • Cracks

  • Incorrect gap

  • Abnormal deposits

Comparing the plug with those from other cylinders can provide useful clues.

4. Test the ignition coil

If the engine uses interchangeable individual coils, a practical diagnostic technique is to move the suspected cylinder #10 coil to another cylinder.

After clearing the codes, the vehicle can then be monitored for the misfire pattern.

If the misfire follows the coil, the coil becomes a strong suspect.

If the misfire remains on cylinder #10, the problem is probably elsewhere.

This test is only appropriate when the vehicle's ignition system and coil configuration allow it.

5. Check the fuel injector

The injector should be checked for electrical operation and mechanical performance.

Depending on the vehicle, diagnosis may include injector balance testing, current-pattern analysis, scan-tool testing, or comparison with the other injectors.

An injector that is electrically functional can still have a mechanical flow problem.

6. Check fuel pressure

Fuel pressure should be compared with the manufacturer's specified values.

Do not assume that a generic fuel-pressure value applies to every engine.

If pressure is too low, the problem may be in the fuel pump, regulator, filter, wiring, or another part of the fuel system.

7. Check for intake leaks

A smoke test can be useful when a vacuum or intake leak is suspected.

Particular attention should be paid to the intake runner, gasket, and vacuum connections associated with cylinder #10.

8. Perform a compression test

If the ignition and fuel systems appear normal, compression should be checked.

Cylinder #10 should be compared with the other cylinders rather than judged only against a generic pressure number.

A significant difference can point toward an internal mechanical problem.

9. Perform a leak-down test when necessary

A leak-down test can help determine where compression is escaping.

Depending on where the air can be heard or detected, the problem may involve:

  • Intake valve

  • Exhaust valve

  • Piston rings

  • Cylinder wall

  • Head gasket

This can be much more informative than repeatedly replacing ignition parts.

10. Check engine timing and VVT

If the mechanical tests indicate a timing-related problem, camshaft and crankshaft synchronization should be checked.

Variable valve timing operation should also be considered where applicable.

Can a Bad Spark Plug Cause P0310?

Yes.

A defective spark plug is one of the simplest potential causes of a cylinder-specific misfire.

However, the presence of P0310 alone is not enough to conclude that the spark plug is bad.

If the plug is replaced and the misfire remains on cylinder #10, further testing is necessary.

Can a Bad Ignition Coil Cause P0310?

Yes.

A weak ignition coil can cause exactly this type of cylinder-specific misfire.

The problem may also be load-dependent. A coil can produce an acceptable spark at idle but fail when cylinder pressure rises during acceleration.

This is one reason a vehicle can seem to run normally at low load while still recording P0310.

Can a Fuel Injector Cause P0310?

Yes.

If the cylinder #10 injector is clogged, stuck, electrically defective, or receiving an incorrect control signal, the cylinder may not receive the proper amount of fuel.

An injector problem should be distinguished from a general fuel-pressure problem affecting the entire engine.

Can Low Compression Cause P0310?

Yes.

If cylinder #10 cannot build adequate compression, even a perfectly functioning spark plug and injector may not produce normal combustion.

Mechanical problems become particularly important when:

  • The ignition system checks out

  • The injector operates correctly

  • There are no significant intake leaks

  • The misfire remains consistently on cylinder #10

Compression and leak-down testing can then provide valuable evidence.

P0310 vs P0300

P0310 means the ECM has detected a misfire specifically associated with cylinder #10.

P0300 means the ECM has detected random or multiple-cylinder misfires without identifying one specific cylinder as the sole source.

If P0310 appears together with P0300, cylinder #10 may be one contributor to a broader misfire problem.

P0310 vs P0301–P0309

The P0301–P0309 codes identify misfires in cylinders 1 through 9.

P0310 extends the same concept to cylinder #10.

The exact cylinder numbering and physical location must always be confirmed for the specific engine.

What Should Be Replaced First?

There is no universal part that should be replaced simply because P0310 is stored.

A more reliable diagnostic sequence is:

Confirm the misfire → identify whether it follows an ignition component → check fuel delivery → check air/intake → check compression → check timing and mechanical condition.

The best repair is the one supported by the test results.

Replacing the spark plug, coil, injector, and eventually the ECU without determining which component actually caused the misfire can become unnecessarily expensive.

Can You Drive With P0310?

It depends on the severity of the misfire.

If the Check Engine Light is steady and the engine is running relatively smoothly, a short and gentle trip to a repair facility may be possible.

However, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine loads.

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the engine is shaking heavily, power is significantly reduced, the engine is stalling, or there is a strong raw-fuel smell, continued driving can increase the risk of catalytic-converter damage and other problems.

P0310 should ultimately be treated as a symptom requiring diagnosis, not as a direct instruction to replace a particular part. The most useful next step is to determine whether the misfire stays on cylinder #10 when ignition, fuel, and mechanical components are individually tested.
