P0416 Secondary Air Injection System Switching Valve "B" Circuit Open

The P0416 trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an open electrical circuit in the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system switching valve "B" circuit.

In simple terms, the vehicle is trying to control a secondary air injection valve, but the electrical circuit associated with valve B appears to be disconnected, broken, or otherwise unable to complete the expected circuit.

This is primarily an electrical circuit fault. P0416 does not, by itself, mean that the secondary air injection pump is defective.

What Is the Secondary Air Injection System?

The Secondary Air Injection system is an emissions-control system used on many gasoline engines.

During a cold start, the engine initially produces higher amounts of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). The catalytic converter also needs time to reach its effective operating temperature.

The SAI system temporarily introduces fresh outside air into the exhaust system. The additional oxygen allows remaining exhaust gases to oxidize, helping:

  • Reduce cold-start emissions

  • Heat the catalytic converter more quickly

  • Improve catalyst efficiency shortly after startup

  • Help the vehicle meet emissions requirements

The system commonly consists of:

  • Secondary air injection pump

  • Switching valves

  • Check valves

  • Vacuum-operated or electrically operated control valves

  • Relays and fuses

  • Hoses and air passages

  • Wiring and connectors

  • ECM/PCM control circuits

The exact configuration varies considerably between manufacturers.

What Does “Switching Valve B” Mean?

The “B” designation identifies a particular valve or control circuit within the vehicle's SAI system.

It does not necessarily mean that every vehicle has two identical secondary air valves called A and B. Manufacturers can use different naming and circuit arrangements.

On one vehicle, Valve B may be an electrically operated air switching valve. On another, it may be a control solenoid that operates a vacuum actuator or another valve.

Therefore, the vehicle's wiring diagram and service information should be used to determine exactly what Switching Valve B refers to.

What Does “Circuit Open” Mean?

The word “open” is important in P0416.

An open circuit means the ECM/PCM detects that the electrical path it expects to see is interrupted or incomplete.

Possible causes include:

  • Broken wire

  • Disconnected connector

  • Corroded connector terminals

  • Loose electrical terminal

  • Damaged valve solenoid

  • Open solenoid winding

  • Broken power supply wire

  • Missing ground

  • Blown fuse

  • Damaged relay

  • Faulty control circuit

  • Wiring damaged by exhaust heat

  • Poor previous repair

  • Rarely, a problem inside the ECM/PCM

An open circuit is different from a valve that is simply stuck mechanically.

For example, a valve could be physically clean and move freely but still trigger P0416 if its electrical connector is disconnected.

Likewise, a valve could have a perfectly intact electrical circuit but be mechanically stuck because of contamination. That type of problem may produce a different SAI fault depending on the vehicle.

Common Causes of P0416

Damaged wiring

The wiring leading to the SAI switching valve can become brittle, burned, stretched, or broken. This is particularly important because secondary air components are often located close to hot exhaust components.

A wire may look acceptable from the outside but have broken internally.

Disconnected or damaged connector

A loose connector, corroded terminal, pushed-back pin, or damaged locking mechanism can interrupt the circuit.

Water and moisture can also cause corrosion inside the connector.

Failed switching valve

If the valve contains an electrical solenoid, an internal open winding can prevent current from flowing through the circuit.

In that situation, the valve itself may be the cause of P0416.

Blown fuse

A blown fuse can interrupt power to the valve or a group of SAI components.

However, simply replacing the fuse is not a complete repair. If the fuse blows again, there is likely an underlying short circuit or excessive current problem that needs to be found.

Relay or power supply problem

Some SAI systems use relays to supply power to the pump and/or switching valves.

A failed relay, poor relay connection, or missing power supply can cause the ECM to see an open or nonfunctional circuit.

Poor ground

A bad ground connection can prevent the valve from operating even though power is present.

Ground connections should be inspected for corrosion, looseness, and excessive voltage drop under load.

ECM/PCM control problem

A control module fault is possible, but it should normally be considered after the valve, wiring, power supply, ground, fuse, relay, and connectors have been properly tested.

Replacing the ECM simply because P0416 is present is not a sound diagnostic approach.

Symptoms of P0416

P0416 may produce very few noticeable driving symptoms because the secondary air injection system primarily operates during specific operating conditions, especially cold starts.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Emissions warning

  • Increased cold-start emissions

  • Secondary air pump not operating correctly

  • Longer catalyst warm-up period

  • Additional secondary air injection codes

  • Slightly increased emissions

  • Possible roughness during cold start

  • Failed emissions inspection

In many vehicles, the driver may notice nothing unusual while driving other than the Check Engine Light.

Can P0416 Cause Poor Engine Performance?

Usually, P0416 does not directly cause major engine-performance problems.

The SAI system is primarily used for emissions control during certain operating conditions. Once the engine and catalytic converter are warm, the system may no longer be active.

However, a fault in the SAI system can sometimes be accompanied by other problems.

For example, if the vehicle has additional codes relating to the air pump, switching valves, vacuum control, or electrical supply, the overall fault may be more complicated than P0416 alone.

This is why all stored and pending DTCs should be checked before replacing any component.

How to Diagnose P0416 Correctly

A proper diagnosis should begin with the electrical circuit rather than immediately replacing the switching valve.

1. Scan for all stored codes

Use a capable diagnostic scanner and check:

  • Stored DTCs

  • Pending DTCs

  • Freeze-frame data

  • Manufacturer-specific codes

  • Related SAI codes

Other SAI codes can provide an important clue about whether the problem is isolated to Valve B or affects the entire system.

2. Check when the code was set

Look at the freeze-frame information if available.

Pay attention to:

  • Engine coolant temperature

  • Engine RPM

  • Vehicle speed

  • Battery voltage

  • Engine load

  • Operating time after startup

If P0416 consistently sets during cold-start SAI operation, that can help confirm the operating conditions under which the ECM detects the problem.

3. Locate Switching Valve B

Do not assume its location based solely on the code description.

Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to identify:

  • Valve B

  • Its power supply

  • Ground circuit

  • ECM control wire

  • Related fuse

  • Related relay

  • Associated connectors

4. Inspect the wiring carefully

Look for:

  • Broken wires

  • Melted insulation

  • Exhaust heat damage

  • Chafing

  • Corrosion

  • Loose terminals

  • Previous repairs

  • Pulled or stretched wiring

Pay particular attention to sections routed near the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, secondary air passages, or other hot components.

5. Check the connector

Disconnect the valve connector and inspect the terminals.

Look for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent pins

  • Spread terminals

  • Water intrusion

  • Pushed-back terminals

  • Broken connector locks

A connector that appears connected does not necessarily make a reliable electrical connection.

6. Check the fuse and relay

Verify the appropriate fuse using the vehicle's wiring diagram.

If the fuse is blown, determine why it blew before installing another one.

Never install a higher-rated fuse to prevent it from blowing.

If a relay is used, test its input, output, and control circuit rather than assuming it is good simply because it clicks.

A relay can click mechanically while still having damaged or high-resistance contacts.

7. Test power and ground

Measure the electrical supply at the valve according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

The ground circuit should also be tested properly.

A simple continuity check may show that a wire is connected while failing to reveal excessive resistance under load.

Voltage-drop testing can be much more useful when dealing with a circuit that carries meaningful current.

8. Test the valve itself

If the switching valve is electrically operated, its internal circuit should be tested according to manufacturer specifications.

An internally open solenoid can directly explain P0416.

Do not rely on a generic resistance value found online because SAI valve specifications vary between vehicles.

Use the specification for the exact engine and valve.

9. Perform an active test if supported

A bidirectional scan tool may allow the technician to command the secondary air switching valve.

During the test, check whether:

  • The valve responds

  • The electrical current changes appropriately

  • The control signal is present

  • The valve physically operates

  • The SAI system responds as expected

This can be much more informative than simply clearing the code and waiting for it to return.

Electrical Testing Is Especially Important

P0416 is an open-circuit code, so electrical diagnosis should receive priority.

For example, imagine the valve itself is replaced but the wire between the valve and ECM is broken.

The new valve will behave exactly like the old one because the ECM still cannot complete the circuit.

The same applies to a corroded connector terminal or missing power supply.

This is why replacing the switching valve without testing the circuit can result in unnecessary expense.

P0416 Does Not Automatically Mean the Valve Is Bad

This is one of the most important points when diagnosing this code.

P0416 tells you that the ECM has detected an open condition in the Switching Valve B circuit.

It does not tell you which physical component caused that condition.

The fault could be:

  • The valve

  • The connector

  • The wiring

  • The fuse

  • The relay

  • The power supply

  • The ground

  • The control circuit

  • The ECM

The diagnostic process is what separates these possibilities.

Can You Drive With P0416?

In many cases, the vehicle can still be driven because the secondary air injection system is primarily an emissions-control system and is most important during cold-start operation.

However, continuing to drive indefinitely with the fault is not recommended.

The vehicle may:

  • Produce higher emissions

  • Fail an emissions inspection

  • Have catalyst warm-up problems

  • Develop additional SAI-related faults

  • Mask another electrical problem affecting the same circuit

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the engine is misfiring severely, there is significant power loss, or there is an electrical burning smell, the situation should be treated as more urgent.

A Practical Way to Approach P0416

If P0416 is the only code present, a sensible diagnostic sequence is:

P0416 → identify Valve B → inspect connector and wiring → check fuse/power/ground → test control circuit → test valve → perform active test → verify SAI operation → clear code and retest.

The most common mistake is to start by replacing the secondary air valve or pump without determining whether the electrical circuit actually reaches the component.

Because P0416 specifically identifies an open circuit, the wiring, connector, power supply, ground, and valve electrical integrity deserve particular attention before condemning expensive components or the ECM.
