What Is an Anti-Theft System?

How Does an Anti-Theft System Work?
Factory-installed anti-theft systems are normally integrated into the vehicle's electrical and electronic architecture. The system can therefore communicate with several other control modules.
When the driver inserts the key into the ignition or uses a smart key, the vehicle checks the electronic identity of the key. In a conventional transponder system, a chip inside the key communicates with the immobilizer antenna.

Trying the spare key is therefore a useful diagnostic step when the vehicle does not recognize the primary key.
There is no general rule that a second key will cause a properly functioning vehicle to shut down while driving.
What Happens If the Smart Key Battery Dies?
When the battery inside a smart key becomes weak or completely discharged, the vehicle may no longer detect the key through its normal wireless communication method.

A flashing security light or a no-start condition should therefore not automatically lead to immobilizer or ECU replacement.
The first checks should include battery voltage, key recognition, key detection, fuses, power and ground connections, wiring, connectors, and diagnostic trouble codes stored in the relevant control modules.
For aftermarket systems, the wiring modifications made during installation should also be inspected carefully.
The most important point is that an anti-theft warning identifies a security or authorization problem; it does not automatically identify the failed component.
