P0015 "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
P0015 is set when the engine control module (ECM/PCM) determines that the “B” camshaft on Bank 1 is positioned too far toward the retarded side compared with the position it expects.
This code is mainly associated with the engine's variable valve timing (VVT) system, but it can also be caused by oil-pressure problems, a camshaft phaser, timing-chain issues, sensor signals, or wiring.
The important distinction is that P0015 describes the camshaft's timing position; it does not identify a failed component by itself.
What Does “Timing Over-Retarded” Mean?
A camshaft can be positioned at different angles relative to the crankshaft.
The ECM may command the camshaft to move to a particular position. It then monitors the camshaft position sensor to determine whether the requested movement actually occurred.
With P0015, the ECM has determined that the actual position remains more retarded than the expected position.
This could happen because the camshaft:

Is not moving when commanded

Moves too slowly

Cannot reach the requested position

Is stuck in a retarded position

Has mechanically shifted from its correct timing position
So, P0015 is essentially a commanded-versus-actual camshaft timing problem.
What Is the “B” Camshaft?
The “B” camshaft designation is manufacturer-dependent.
On many engines, “B” refers to the exhaust camshaft, but this is not universal. The exact camshaft should therefore be identified using the manufacturer's service information.
Bank 1 is the cylinder bank containing cylinder number 1.
On an inline four-cylinder engine, there is normally only one bank, so a code specifying Bank 1 does not indicate one side of a V-engine.
Where VVT Enters the Picture
The variable valve timing system allows the ECM to alter camshaft timing according to engine operating conditions.
A typical system can include:

Why Would the Camshaft Remain Retarded?
There isn't one universal cause.
A sticking VVT solenoid
The oil control solenoid may become contaminated with debris or sludge and fail to regulate oil flow correctly.
Restricted oil passages
Even when the solenoid itself works, restricted passages can prevent sufficient oil from reaching the camshaft phaser.
Incorrect or degraded engine oil
VVT systems can be sensitive to oil viscosity and condition. Oil that is excessively dirty or does not meet the manufacturer's specification can interfere with proper actuator response.
Low engine oil level
Insufficient oil can reduce the hydraulic capability of the VVT system.
Low oil pressure
A VVT system cannot operate correctly if the engine cannot provide the required oil pressure.
Faulty camshaft phaser
The phaser itself may stick, wear internally, or fail to hold the commanded position.
Timing-chain or belt problems
A stretched chain, incorrect installation, damaged component, or jumped timing can physically alter camshaft position.
Camshaft or crankshaft signal problems
The ECM calculates camshaft timing using position signals. An inaccurate signal can therefore create an apparent timing error.
Wiring or connector faults
Poor connections, damaged wiring, corrosion, or intermittent signal problems can interfere with the control or feedback circuits.
The Symptoms Can Be Subtle
Not every vehicle with P0015 will immediately develop severe drivability problems.
Depending on the engine, you may notice:

Some vehicles may continue to drive almost normally while the code remains stored.
P0015 Does Not Automatically Mean “Replace the VVT Solenoid”
This is an important diagnostic point.
Because P0015 is commonly associated with VVT, it is tempting to remove the solenoid and replace it immediately.
But the solenoid may be working correctly.
For example, the ECM may command the camshaft to advance, but the camshaft phaser may be unable to move because of insufficient oil pressure.
In that situation, replacing the solenoid would not solve the problem.
The same applies to a stretched timing chain or a mechanically damaged phaser.
The code identifies the timing behavior, not the failed part.
A Simple Way to Separate the Possibilities
Suppose the scan tool shows that the ECM is commanding a significant change in camshaft position.
If the actual camshaft position barely changes, several possibilities remain:
Electrical problem?
The solenoid may not be receiving the correct power or control signal.
Hydraulic problem?
Oil pressure or oil flow may be insufficient.
VVT solenoid problem?
The solenoid may be stuck or internally restricted.
Phaser problem?
The phaser may be mechanically stuck.
Mechanical timing problem?
The timing chain or belt may not be maintaining the correct relationship.
This is why live data and actuator testing can be much more informative than simply reading the DTC.
How P0015 Should Be Diagnosed
A good diagnosis should begin with the simplest checks.
Start with the oil
Check the level, condition, viscosity, and specification.
If the oil is severely contaminated or the level is incorrect, correct that condition before continuing.
Read all other codes
P0015 should not be considered in isolation.
Additional camshaft, crankshaft, VVT, oil-pressure, or misfire codes may reveal the larger problem.
Check freeze-frame data
Determine when the ECM detected the fault.
Engine speed, coolant temperature, load, and other available parameters can show whether the problem occurs during startup, idle, acceleration, or another operating condition.
Compare commanded and actual camshaft position
This is one of the most useful diagnostic steps.
If the ECM commands the camshaft toward a particular position but the actual value remains retarded, the technician has evidence that the VVT system is not achieving the requested movement.
Test the VVT solenoid
Depending on the vehicle, this can involve checking its electrical circuit, resistance, current, power supply, and operation through an active test.
A solenoid that has correct electrical resistance can still be mechanically stuck.
Check oil pressure
If the VVT system depends on hydraulic pressure, oil pressure should be verified according to the manufacturer's specifications.
Inspect the camshaft phaser
If the electrical and oil systems are functioning correctly, the phaser itself may need to be examined.
Verify mechanical timing
If the camshaft remains out of position despite a functioning VVT system, inspect the timing chain or belt, tensioner, guides, and timing marks as applicable.
Can an Oil Change Fix P0015?
Sometimes.
If contaminated or incorrect oil is preventing the VVT system from operating correctly, servicing the oil can restore normal operation.
But an oil change cannot repair:

A damaged camshaft phaser

A defective VVT solenoid
-
A stretched timing chain
-
Incorrect mechanical timing
-
A damaged sensor
-
Broken wiring
-
Low oil pressure caused by an internal engine problem
Therefore, an oil change can be part of the diagnosis, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed solution.
Could the Timing Chain Be the Problem?
Yes, but the code alone does not prove it.
A stretched or incorrectly installed timing chain can cause the camshaft to remain outside the expected position.
A jumped chain is more concerning and is more likely to produce pronounced symptoms such as severe rough running, difficult starting, loss of power, or timing-system noise.
If P0015 appeared immediately after timing-chain or engine work, mechanical timing should receive particular attention.
Can You Drive With P0015?
The answer depends on how the engine is behaving.
If the engine runs normally and the Check Engine Light is steady, short-distance driving to a repair facility may be possible.
However, continued driving should be avoided or minimized if there is:

Severe loss of power

Engine stalling
-
Severe misfire
-
Difficult starting
-
Loud timing-chain noise

Multiple camshaft timing codes

A flashing Check Engine Light
If the underlying problem is mechanical timing, continued operation could potentially lead to more serious engine damage on engines where valve-to-piston contact is possible.
The Right Way to Think About P0015
P0015 does not tell you:
“The VVT solenoid is bad.”
It tells you:
“The Bank 1 ‘B’ camshaft is more retarded than the ECM expects.”
From there, the diagnosis should determine why.
The most useful path is to examine oil condition and pressure, VVT solenoid operation, commanded versus actual camshaft position, the camshaft phaser, sensor signals, and finally the mechanical timing system.
That approach avoids unnecessary parts replacement and makes it much easier to distinguish a VVT control problem from a genuine timing-chain or mechanical engine fault.
