P0445 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted

The P0445 diagnostic trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a short circuit in the electrical control circuit of the EVAP purge control valve.

The EVAP system captures fuel vapors from the fuel tank and stores them in a charcoal canister. Under the right operating conditions, the ECM commands the purge control valve to open and allows those vapors to enter the engine intake, where they are burned.

P0445 specifically points toward the electrical circuit controlling the purge valve. It does not simply mean that the EVAP system has a vapor leak, and it does not automatically mean that the purge valve itself must be replaced.

This is particularly important when the wiring passes near brackets, the engine, or other components.

Damaged connector

  • Electrically shorted and mechanically normal

  • Electrically open

  • Electrically shorted and mechanically stuck

Therefore, electrical and mechanical operation should be tested separately.

A valve that clicks during activation is not automatically proven to be good.

Symptoms of P0445

P0445 can produce a Check Engine Light with little or no noticeable driving problem.

P0445 concerns the electrical circuit of the purge control valve.

It does not directly indicate an EVAP leak.

Other codes are more specifically related to EVAP leaks, including:

  • P0442 – EVAP system small leak

  • P0455 – EVAP system large leak

  • P0456 – EVAP system very small leak

  • P0457 – EVAP system leak/fuel cap-related condition

An electrical purge-valve fault can prevent the EVAP system from completing its normal leak-monitoring procedures, so additional codes may appear.

But P0445 itself should be approached as an electrical circuit fault.

How Is P0445 Diagnosed?

A good diagnosis starts with the wiring diagram and the exact electrical design of the vehicle.

1. Scan for all codes

Check for additional EVAP, electrical, voltage, fuel-system, and communication codes.

If multiple solenoids have circuit codes at the same time, a shared power supply or ground may be worth investigating.

2. Check the freeze-frame data

Look at the conditions under which P0445 was stored.

Useful information can include:

  • Engine temperature

  • Engine RPM

  • Vehicle speed

  • Battery voltage

  • Fuel level

  • EVAP-related parameters

This can help determine when the fault occurred.

3. Locate the purge valve

Identify the correct purge valve using vehicle-specific service information.

It is commonly located in the engine compartment, although the exact position varies.

Do not confuse it with the EVAP vent valve.

The purge valve controls vapor flow toward the engine, while the vent valve controls the EVAP system's connection to outside air.

4. Inspect the connector

Check the purge-valve connector for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Water intrusion

  • Damaged locking tabs

  • Oil contamination

  • Terminals pushed backward

A connector can look properly connected while one of its terminals has poor contact.

5. Inspect the wiring

Why a Multimeter Test Can Be Misleading

Simply measuring resistance across the purge valve does not always provide a complete diagnosis.

For example, a technician may find that the coil has resistance and conclude that the valve is good.

But there can still be:

  • Intermittent internal faults

  • Wiring problems

  • Shorting under vibration

  • Connector problems

  • Mechanical leakage

  • Incorrect ECM control

Similarly, seeing battery voltage at one connector terminal does not automatically prove that the circuit is healthy under load.

This gives a more specific indication that the ECM has detected a shorted electrical condition.

Therefore, P0445 directs the diagnosis more specifically toward shorts and excessive/unexpected electrical current or voltage.

P0445 vs P0444

P0444 – EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Open

This indicates an interrupted electrical circuit.

P0445 – EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted

This indicates an electrical short condition.

An open circuit and a short circuit are fundamentally different electrical faults, even though both can prevent the purge valve from operating correctly.

P0445 vs P0446

These codes involve different EVAP components.

P0445 concerns the purge control valve circuit.

P0446 concerns the EVAP vent control circuit/system performance.

In simple terms:

  • Purge side → vapor is controlled toward the engine.

  • Vent side → EVAP system ventilation is controlled.

Confusing these two valves can lead to replacing the wrong component.

P0445 vs P0496

These codes can both be associated with purge problems but describe different findings.

P0445 is an electrical circuit problem involving the purge valve.

P0496 generally indicates excessive EVAP purge flow, meaning the engine is detecting vapor flow when it should not be occurring or when it is greater than expected.

Can P0445 Be Caused by a Bad Fuel Cap?

A fuel cap is not normally the cause of P0445.

A bad fuel cap can cause EVAP leak codes because it prevents the fuel system from sealing correctly.

But it does not normally create a short circuit in the purge valve's electrical wiring.

If P0445 is present, concentrate on the purge valve, connector, wiring, power supply, and control circuit first.

Can P0445 Damage the Engine?

Usually, P0445 itself does not directly cause engine damage.

However, if the purge valve remains open or the electrical fault is accompanied by a mechanical purge problem, the engine may experience:

  • Rough running

  • Hard starting

  • Stalling

  • Hesitation

  • Incorrect air-fuel mixture

If the vehicle is running poorly or repeatedly stalls, the problem should be repaired promptly rather than treated as a harmless Check Engine Light.

Is P0445 Safe to Drive?

If the vehicle starts and runs normally, P0445 is generally not an immediate engine-damage emergency.

Short trips may be possible while arranging a diagnosis.

However, if you experience:

  • Severe rough running

  • Repeated stalling

  • Difficult starting

  • Strong fuel vapor smell

  • Visible fuel leakage

the vehicle should be inspected as soon as possible.

The EVAP system contains fuel vapors, so unusual fuel smells should not be ignored.

Can Clearing the Code Fix P0445?

No.

A diagnostic scanner can erase P0445 from memory, but it cannot repair a shorted circuit.

If the underlying problem remains, the ECM will detect the abnormal condition again when it performs its diagnostic checks.

Repeatedly clearing the code can also make diagnosis more difficult because useful freeze-frame and fault-history information may be lost.

Final Diagnosis

P0445 is a purge-control valve electrical circuit fault indicating a shorted condition.

The purge solenoid itself may be internally shorted, but the real cause could also be a damaged wire, shorted control circuit, contaminated connector, incorrect repair, or power-supply problem.

The correct diagnosis is therefore not simply “replace the EVAP purge valve.”

The technician should first determine how the purge circuit is designed, inspect the connector and harness, test for shorts, verify the valve's electrical characteristics, and then confirm that the valve also operates and seals mechanically.

Once the electrical fault has been identified and repaired, the EVAP system can be tested again to make sure the purge function and emissions-monitoring system are operating normally.

P0445 tells you that the ECM has detected an abnormal shorted condition in the EVAP purge-valve circuit. It identifies the electrical circuit involved, not necessarily the failed component.
