P0444 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Open

P0444 indicates that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an open electrical circuit in the EVAP purge control valve circuit.

The EVAP purge valve is responsible for controlling when stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister are allowed to enter the engine and be burned.

The important word in this code is “Open.” The ECM is not simply saying that the purge valve is not working mechanically. It is detecting an electrical condition in which the expected current flow or control path is missing or interrupted.

This makes P0444 primarily a circuit diagnosis, not an automatic instruction to replace the purge valve.

What the EVAP purge valve does

Fuel in the tank naturally produces gasoline vapor.

The EVAP system captures these vapors in a charcoal canister instead of allowing them to escape into the atmosphere.

When the engine is operating under suitable conditions, the ECM commands the purge valve to open.

Fresh air is drawn through the EVAP system, carrying stored fuel vapors toward the intake. The engine then burns those vapors during normal combustion.

The purge valve therefore acts as an electrically controlled gate between the charcoal canister and the engine.

Depending on the vehicle, the system may include:

  • Fuel tank

  • Charcoal canister

  • EVAP purge valve

  • EVAP vent valve

  • Fuel tank pressure sensor

  • EVAP hoses

  • Check valves

  • Leak-detection components

  • ECM/PCM

The exact architecture varies by manufacturer.

What “circuit open” means

P0444 means the ECM has detected an interruption or missing electrical path in the purge-valve control circuit.

Possible causes include:

  • Broken control wire

  • Disconnected connector

  • Loose terminal

  • Corroded connector

  • Open purge-valve coil

  • Missing power supply

  • Blown fuse where applicable

  • Broken ground/control path

  • Damaged harness

  • Poor terminal contact

  • Incorrectly installed component

  • ECM control-driver problem

The exact circuit arrangement depends on the vehicle.

Many purge valves use a two-wire solenoid, with one side receiving power and the ECM controlling the other side. But this should never be assumed without checking the vehicle's wiring diagram.

P0444 does not necessarily mean the purge valve is bad

This is the most important diagnostic point.

Imagine the purge valve is completely healthy, but one wire between the valve and ECM is broken.

The valve cannot operate.

The ECM detects the missing electrical path and stores P0444.

Replacing the purge valve in this situation would accomplish nothing.

The same problem can occur if the connector has a damaged terminal or if the power supply is missing.

Therefore, the technician should determine where the circuit is open before replacing the valve.

Common causes of P0444

Open wiring

A broken wire is one of the most straightforward causes.

The harness can be damaged by heat, vibration, rubbing or previous repair work.

Disconnected connector

The purge-valve connector may not be fully seated.

This can happen after engine or intake-system repairs.

Corroded connector

Moisture and contamination can increase resistance or completely interrupt the circuit.

Open purge-valve coil

The solenoid winding inside the valve can fail electrically and produce an open circuit.

Damaged terminal

A terminal can be pushed backward inside the connector and fail to make proper contact.

Missing power supply

Depending on the vehicle, the purge valve may receive power through a fuse or another controlled supply.

Damaged ECM control circuit

The ECM may be unable to complete the electrical path because of a control-driver problem.

Incorrect replacement component

A physically compatible-looking valve may have a different electrical configuration.

Symptoms of P0444

P0444 may produce only a Check Engine Light.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • EVAP monitor failure

  • Increased evaporative emissions

  • Reduced fuel economy in some cases

  • Fuel odor

  • Rough idle in certain circumstances

  • Hard starting in some cases

  • Difficulty completing emissions readiness tests

The vehicle may otherwise drive normally.

The effect depends on whether the purge valve is stuck closed, whether another EVAP problem exists, and how the manufacturer controls fuel-vapor purge.

What happens if the purge valve does not operate?

If the electrical circuit is open, the purge valve may remain closed.

That means the engine cannot properly draw stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister when purge is required.

The immediate result may simply be increased emissions.

However, depending on the system, the ECM may also detect additional EVAP-related problems because the expected purge operation never occurs.

This can affect the vehicle's ability to complete its EVAP self-tests.

Check for other codes first

A complete scan should be performed before diagnosing P0444 in isolation.

Look for other EVAP codes such as:

  • P0441

  • P0445

  • P0446

  • P0448

Other codes can help determine whether the problem is limited to the purge circuit or whether the vehicle has a larger EVAP-system problem.

Start with the purge valve connector

The connector is one of the easiest places to inspect.

Look for:

  • Loose connection

  • Broken locking tab

  • Corrosion

  • Water intrusion

  • Bent pins

  • Pushed-back terminals

  • Damaged seals

  • Signs of overheating

A connector may appear attached while one terminal is actually not making electrical contact.

Terminal tension is therefore important.

Inspect the wiring

Follow the purge-valve harness back toward the engine harness.

Look for:

  • Broken wires

  • Chafed insulation

  • Melted wiring

  • Pinched wires

  • Previous repairs

  • Poor splices

  • Harness rubbing against brackets

  • Damage near the intake or engine

Because the purge valve is often mounted in the engine compartment, heat and vibration can gradually damage its wiring.

Test the purge valve coil

If the valve is a conventional solenoid, its coil resistance can be measured.

However, there is no universal resistance specification for all EVAP purge valves.

The manufacturer's specification should be used.

A reading indicating an open circuit can strongly suggest a failed coil.

But a normal resistance reading does not necessarily prove that the valve is fully functional.

The valve can have an electrically healthy coil while being mechanically stuck or leaking.

Check the power supply

If the vehicle uses a power-and-ECM-control arrangement, verify that the valve receives the expected supply voltage.

The exact voltage and test conditions depend on the vehicle.

A missing supply may point toward:

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Power wiring

  • Shared supply circuit

  • Connector

  • Harness problem

Replacing the purge valve will not fix a missing power supply.

Check the ECM control circuit

The other side of the circuit should be tested according to the wiring diagram.

The technician may need to verify:

  • Continuity between valve and ECM

  • Control-wire integrity

  • Short to ground

  • Short to voltage

  • Voltage drop

  • ECM command

  • Terminal condition

An oscilloscope or suitable test equipment can be useful when the ECM uses a pulsed control signal.

A simple continuity test may not reveal a high-resistance or intermittent connection.

Use a bidirectional scan tool when possible

A scan tool capable of active EVAP purge control can make diagnosis much easier.

The technician can command the purge valve and observe whether the valve responds.

Depending on the vehicle, the scan tool may show:

  • Purge command percentage

  • Valve duty cycle

  • EVAP pressure

  • Fuel-tank pressure

  • Related sensor responses

The command itself is not proof that the valve is operating.

The electrical and physical response should be verified.

Electrical operation and mechanical operation are different

This distinction is especially important with P0444.

A purge valve has two separate aspects that can fail.

Electrical side

The coil or control circuit may be open.

Mechanical side

The valve may be stuck open, stuck closed or leaking internally.

P0444 primarily points toward the electrical circuit being open.

If the electrical circuit is repaired but the valve still does not seal or respond correctly, a mechanical problem may also exist.

Can a stuck-open purge valve cause P0444?

Not normally by itself.

A purge valve that is mechanically stuck open can cause incorrect purge flow and other EVAP-related problems.

But if its electrical circuit is intact and the ECM sees the expected electrical behavior, a mechanically stuck valve does not automatically produce an open-circuit code.

This is why P0444 should first direct attention toward the electrical circuit.

Can a bad fuel cap cause P0444?

A loose or damaged fuel cap can cause EVAP leak-related codes.

It does not normally cause an open electrical purge-valve circuit.

Therefore, replacing the fuel cap is not the logical primary repair for P0444.

The purge valve's electrical circuit needs to be checked.

Can a vent valve cause P0444?

The purge valve and vent valve perform different functions.

The purge valve controls vapor movement toward the engine.

The vent valve controls the fresh-air side of the EVAP system.

A vent valve problem can produce other EVAP faults, but it does not normally explain an open purge-control circuit.

If both valves appear to have faults, inspect their wiring and power supplies for a common cause.

P0444 vs. P0443

These two codes are closely related.

P0443 – EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit

This is a general malfunction of the purge-valve control circuit.

P0444 – EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Open

The ECM specifically detects an open or interrupted circuit.

P0444 therefore gives a more specific electrical clue.

P0444 vs. P0445

P0444 generally indicates an open purge-control circuit.

P0445 generally indicates a shorted purge-control circuit.

The distinction depends on the electrical behavior detected by the ECM.

If P0444 is present, an open wire, disconnected connector, failed coil or missing circuit path should be investigated first.

Can P0444 cause P0455 or P0456?

It can contribute to EVAP diagnostic problems, but the relationship should not be assumed.

The EVAP system depends on the purge and vent valves working correctly during its self-tests.

If the purge valve cannot be electrically controlled, the ECM may be unable to perform certain tests correctly and additional EVAP codes can appear.

If P0444 and an EVAP leak code are stored together, repair the known electrical fault and then repeat the EVAP test before assuming there is a separate physical leak.

A practical diagnostic sequence

A sensible diagnosis is:

1. Scan all modules

Look for additional EVAP, power-supply and communication codes.

2. Check freeze-frame data

Determine when P0444 was detected.

3. Inspect the purge valve

Check the valve body and its connector.

4. Inspect the connector terminals

Look for corrosion, loose terminals and pushed-back pins.

5. Inspect the harness

Check for broken, melted, chafed or disconnected wiring.

6. Identify the circuit architecture

Determine how the purge valve receives power and how the ECM controls it.

7. Test the valve coil

Compare resistance with the manufacturer's specification.

8. Verify power and control

Test the actual circuit rather than relying only on continuity.

9. Perform an active purge command

If supported, command the valve and verify its electrical and mechanical response.

10. Check valve sealing

If the electrical circuit is correct but EVAP behavior remains abnormal, investigate whether the valve is mechanically stuck or leaking.

Why a resistance test alone is not enough

Suppose the purge valve measures within the specified resistance range.

That proves the coil is not obviously open or shorted, but it does not prove that:

  • The connector is good

  • The power supply is correct

  • The ECM control signal is correct

  • The valve moves

  • The valve seals

  • The wiring can carry the required current

Likewise, an open resistance reading does not always mean the valve is the only possible problem if the measurement was made through a damaged connector or harness.

Testing needs to be performed at the appropriate points in the circuit.

Final diagnostic perspective

P0444 indicates that the ECM has detected an open circuit in the EVAP purge control valve circuit.

The fault may be caused by the purge valve itself, but it can just as easily involve:

  • Broken wiring

  • Disconnected connector

  • Corroded terminal

  • Missing power supply

  • Damaged control circuit

  • Open solenoid coil

  • ECM driver problem

The correct approach is therefore:

Inspect → identify the circuit → test power and control → test the valve → verify mechanical operation.

P0444 is fundamentally an electrical circuit diagnosis, not proof of an EVAP leak and not an automatic command to replace the purge valve.

The key question is:

Where is the electrical path to the purge control valve being interrupted?
