P0297 Vehicle Overspeed Condition

The P0297 trouble code means that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a vehicle speed that exceeded a programmed or permitted threshold.

In simple terms, the control module believes the vehicle has been traveling faster than the speed limit defined by the vehicle's calibration or operating strategy.

P0297 is therefore quite different from codes such as P0299. P0299 is a turbocharger underboost code, while P0297 is related to vehicle speed.

The code does not necessarily mean that the driver intentionally exceeded the vehicle's maximum speed. The ECM can also set P0297 when it receives an incorrectly high vehicle-speed signal or when different control modules disagree about the actual vehicle speed.

  3. Check the freeze-frame data from the P0297 event.

  4. Determine whether the recorded vehicle speed was physically plausible.

  5. Check the speedometer for abnormal behavior.

  6. Monitor individual wheel-speed data if the vehicle uses ABS/ESC speed information.

  7. Check for ABS/ESC and traction-control codes.

  8. Inspect wheel-speed sensors, wiring, connectors, and tone/encoder rings.

  9. Check tire sizes and rolling circumference if the vehicle has recently had tire or wheel changes.

  10. Check the vehicle-speed or transmission output-speed sensor where applicable.

  11. Investigate CAN communication if multiple modules report inconsistent speed information.

  12. Verify module configuration and calibration after recent programming or replacement.

  13. Check battery voltage, charging system, and grounds if multiple electrical faults are present.

  14. Consider the ECM/PCM only after the speed-signal system and communication network have been properly tested.

Is P0297 a Serious Fault?

The seriousness depends on the reason for the code.

If the vehicle genuinely exceeded a programmed speed threshold, P0297 may simply record an operating condition.

If the code is caused by an incorrect vehicle-speed signal, however, it can affect more than just the Check Engine Light.

Incorrect speed information can interfere with:

  • ABS/ESC operation

  • Traction control

  • Cruise control

  • Transmission shifting

  • Engine torque management

  • Vehicle speed display

For that reason, an unexplained P0297 should be investigated rather than permanently ignored.
