P0265 Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit High

P0265 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 2.

The important word in this code is “High.” It describes an electrical condition in the injector circuit. It does not mean high fuel pressure, excessive fuel delivery, high engine temperature, or high engine RPM.

P0265 should therefore be approached primarily as an electrical circuit problem, although the resulting injector malfunction can eventually cause poor combustion and a cylinder misfire.

What Does P0265 Mean?

The ECM controls the cylinder 2 fuel injector by switching its electrical circuit according to engine operating conditions.

The exact electrical design differs between vehicles. Some systems provide a common voltage supply to the injectors and the ECM controls the opposite side of the circuit. Other systems use high-side drivers, low-side drivers, or current-controlled injector circuits.

When the ECM detects an electrical condition that is higher than the expected value for cylinder 2's injector circuit, it can store P0265.

In simple terms:

P0265 means the ECM sees an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 2 injector circuit.

It does not automatically mean the injector itself has failed.

What Can Cause P0265?

Several different faults can trigger this code:

  • Faulty cylinder 2 fuel injector

  • Open injector control circuit

  • Short to battery voltage

  • Damaged injector control wire

  • Broken wire inside the harness

  • Corroded injector connector

  • Loose or poorly tensioned terminal

  • Injector connector not fully seated

  • Damaged injector power supply

  • Fault in a shared injector power circuit

  • Harness damage caused by heat or vibration

  • Internal electrical failure of the injector

  • ECM injector driver problem

The actual cause must be established through circuit testing rather than assumed from the code description.

“High” Does Not Mean Too Much Fuel

This is one of the most common misunderstandings with injector circuit codes.

P0265 does not mean that cylinder 2 is receiving too much fuel.

The word “High” refers to the electrical voltage, current, or circuit behavior detected by the ECM, depending on the system's diagnostic strategy.

For example, a control wire shorted to battery voltage can create a high electrical condition.

An open circuit or disconnected injector can also produce an unexpected voltage state on some injector-control systems.

The exact interpretation depends on the vehicle's circuit design.

The Injector May Not Be the Fault

A perfectly functional injector can be connected to a faulty circuit.

For example, imagine that the cylinder 2 injector is mechanically and electrically healthy, but its control wire has rubbed against another wire and is now receiving battery voltage.

The ECM can detect this abnormal condition and set P0265.

The same type of fault can result from a loose connector terminal or damaged wiring.

This is why replacing the injector immediately is not a reliable diagnostic procedure.

Check All DTCs First

Before concentrating on cylinder 2, perform a complete scan for stored and pending DTCs.

The presence of additional codes can significantly change the diagnostic direction.

If several injector circuit codes are stored simultaneously, investigate common components such as:

  • Injector power supply

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Shared wiring

  • Engine grounds

  • ECM power supply

If P0265 is isolated to cylinder 2, then the cylinder 2 injector, connector, and individual wiring become the primary focus.

Inspect the Cylinder 2 Injector Connector

A careful visual inspection should be performed before electrical testing.

Look for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Terminals pushed backward inside the connector

  • Broken connector locking mechanism

  • Water contamination

  • Oil contamination

  • Damaged wires near the connector

A connector may appear completely normal while one terminal has lost its proper contact tension.

This can create an intermittent circuit fault that is particularly difficult to reproduce.

Inspect the Injector Harness

Follow the cylinder 2 injector wiring back toward the main engine harness.

Pay attention to areas where the harness may:

  • Rub against the engine

  • Contact an exhaust component

  • Melt from excessive heat

  • Become pinched

  • Become stretched

  • Vibrate against another component

  • Have been previously repaired

Engine wiring is exposed to significant heat and vibration, making physical harness damage a realistic cause of injector circuit faults.

If P0265 appears only after the engine warms up or during acceleration, an intermittent wiring problem becomes particularly interesting.

Use the Correct Wiring Diagram

Before measuring voltage or grounding any circuit, identify the injector circuit architecture using the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Determine:

  • Injector power supply

  • Injector control wire

  • ECM connector and pin

  • Shared injector circuits

  • Fuse and relay connections

  • Ground paths

  • High-side or low-side driver arrangement

There is no universal injector voltage test that can safely be applied to every engine.

The correct test points and expected values depend on the specific injection system.

Check the Injector Power Supply

Verify that the cylinder 2 injector receives the correct electrical supply.

If the injectors share a common power source, check whether the other injectors are receiving the same supply.

A fault affecting several injector circuits may be caused by one common power or wiring problem rather than several defective injectors.

Voltage-drop testing can also be useful when there is suspicion of excessive resistance in a supply or ground path.

Check the Control Circuit for a Short to Voltage

Because P0265 is a circuit-high code, a short to battery voltage is one of the important possibilities.

The technician should determine whether the cylinder 2 injector control wire is being held at an abnormal voltage when it should be switching differently.

However, the test must be performed according to the injector's control architecture.

Do not simply connect battery voltage or ground directly to an injector control terminal.

An incorrect test can damage the ECM's injector driver.

Check for an Open Circuit

An open circuit can also produce an abnormal electrical condition.

The wire may be completely broken or only partially damaged.

A conductor can break inside its insulation while still looking normal externally.

A basic continuity test can identify a completely open wire, but it may not reveal a high-resistance fault that appears only when the circuit is under load.

Where appropriate, loaded-circuit testing and voltage-drop measurements provide more useful information.

Test the Injector Itself

The cylinder 2 injector should also be tested according to its specific design.

Depending on the injector, electrical testing may identify:

  • Open internal coil

  • Shorted coil

  • Resistance outside specification

However, injector resistance alone does not prove that the injector is good.

An injector can have normal electrical resistance but still suffer from:

  • Restricted fuel flow

  • Poor spray pattern

  • Mechanical sticking

  • Contamination

  • Incorrect fuel delivery

Electrical and mechanical injector testing are therefore separate parts of a complete diagnosis.

Oscilloscope Testing

An oscilloscope can be particularly useful when the basic electrical tests do not reveal the problem.

The cylinder 2 injector waveform can be compared with a known-good injector.

Depending on the system, this can reveal abnormalities in:

  • Control voltage

  • Switching behavior

  • Current rise

  • Injector activation

  • Inductive voltage

  • Driver operation

  • Circuit interruptions

  • Electrical noise

Waveform comparison is especially valuable for intermittent faults that disappear before the vehicle reaches the workshop.

Can P0265 Cause a Misfire?

Yes.

If the cylinder 2 injector is not being controlled correctly, fuel delivery can become insufficient or completely interrupted.

This can cause:

  • Rough idle

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Loss of power

  • Engine vibration

  • Difficult starting

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Cylinder 2 misfire

A related code such as P0302 – Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected may therefore appear alongside P0265.

If both codes are present, the cylinder 2 injector circuit should be carefully investigated.

However, the presence of P0265 does not eliminate other possible causes of P0302. The ignition, compression, air supply, and fuel system should still be considered when the evidence points in those directions.

P0265 That Appears During Acceleration

An injector circuit fault that occurs only under load can provide a useful clue.

During acceleration:

  • Engine movement increases

  • Harness movement increases

  • Electrical demand changes

  • Injector operation changes

  • Engine temperature may rise

A damaged wire or weak connector terminal can therefore work normally at idle but fail during acceleration.

In this situation, reproducing the fault while monitoring the circuit can be more informative than performing a simple stationary resistance test.

Gasoline and Diesel Systems Are Different

The diagnostic procedure also depends on whether the engine is gasoline or diesel.

A conventional gasoline port injector has very different electrical characteristics from a modern common-rail diesel injector.

Some diesel injection systems use specialized injector drivers and electrical operating strategies.

Consequently, there is no single resistance or voltage value that applies to all injectors.

Always use the manufacturer's specifications for the specific engine and injection system.

Multiple Injector Codes

If P0265 appears together with other injector circuit codes, investigate common electrical points before replacing individual injectors.

Check:

  • Shared injector power

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Common harness

  • ECM power supply

  • Engine grounds

  • Shared connectors

Several simultaneous injector circuit codes can be a strong clue toward a common electrical fault.

What About the ECM?

The ECM's injector driver can fail and cause a circuit fault.

However, the ECM should normally be considered after the injector and external circuit have been thoroughly tested.

Before condemning the ECM, verify:

  • Injector condition

  • Connector condition

  • Power supply

  • Control wiring

  • Circuit continuity

  • Short-to-voltage condition

  • Short-to-ground condition where applicable

  • Voltage drop

  • ECM command

An ECM should not be replaced simply because P0265 remains after an injector replacement.

P0265 vs P0264 and P0266

These codes are closely related to cylinder 2 but describe different conditions.

P0264 – Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit Low

The ECM detects an abnormally low electrical condition in the cylinder 2 injector circuit.

P0265 – Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit High

The ECM detects an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 2 injector circuit.

P0266 – Cylinder 2 Contribution / Balance Fault

The ECM determines that cylinder 2 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.

The distinction between P0265 and P0266 is especially important.

P0265 is primarily an electrical injector-circuit fault.

P0266 is primarily a cylinder performance or contribution fault and can be caused by fuel delivery, ignition, compression, valve-train problems, timing, or other engine conditions.

A Practical Diagnostic Order for P0265

A logical diagnostic procedure is:

  1. Scan all stored and pending DTCs.

  2. Check freeze-frame information.

  3. Confirm the physical location of cylinder 2 using manufacturer service information.

  4. Inspect the cylinder 2 injector connector.

  5. Inspect the complete injector harness.

  6. Verify injector power supply.

  7. Identify the control circuit using the wiring diagram.

  8. Check for open circuits and unwanted shorts.

  9. Perform voltage-drop testing where appropriate.

  10. Test the injector's electrical characteristics.

  11. Compare the injector waveform with a known-good cylinder if necessary.

  12. Perform injector flow or balance testing if the electrical system checks out but fuel delivery remains questionable.

  13. Test the ECM injector driver only after the external circuit has been verified.

  14. Clear the code and verify the repair under the conditions that originally triggered P0265.

Final Diagnosis

P0265 – Cylinder 2 Injector Circuit High means that the ECM has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 2 injector circuit.

It does not automatically mean that the injector is defective, and it does not indicate high fuel pressure.

The actual problem may be a short to battery voltage, damaged control wire, open circuit, poor connector contact, shared injector power problem, internal injector fault, or—less commonly—an ECM injector-driver failure.

The correct approach is to diagnose the complete electrical circuit first, establish whether the injector is actually being controlled correctly, and then verify its mechanical fuel delivery if necessary. This prevents unnecessary injector replacement and makes it much more likely that the real cause of P0265 will be found.
