P0268 Cylinder 3 Injector Circuit High

P0268 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code that means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder #3.

The word “High” refers to the electrical signal or circuit condition, not necessarily high fuel pressure or excessive fuel delivery.

This distinction is important. P0268 does not automatically mean that cylinder #3 is receiving too much fuel, that the injector is stuck open, or that the fuel pressure is too high. The wiring harness can become damaged because of vibration, heat, oil contamination, previous repairs, or contact with engine components.

A wire can look acceptable externally while having an internal electrical problem.

Connector or terminal problem

The injector connector should be inspected carefully.

  • Bent terminals

  • Damaged locking mechanism

  • Partially backed-out pins

Neither code automatically identifies the injector as the failed component.

The wiring, connector, power supply, control circuit, and ECM driver must also be considered.

P0268 vs P0269

The distinction between these codes is important.

P0268 concerns the electrical circuit controlling the cylinder #3 injector.

P0269 concerns the contribution or balance of cylinder #3.

A vehicle can have a cylinder contribution problem without having an injector circuit electrical fault.

For example, P0269 can potentially be caused by low compression, an ignition problem, valve problems, incorrect timing, or poor injector performance.

P0268 is much more specifically concerned with the injector's electrical control circuit.

How to Diagnose P0268

A systematic electrical diagnosis is much more effective than immediately replacing the injector.

1. Scan for all stored codes

First, scan the entire vehicle and record all active, pending, and stored DTCs.

Look for additional codes involving:

  • Other injectors

  • Fuel pressure

  • Misfires

  • Camshaft or crankshaft position

  • Engine timing

  • ECM power supply

  • Communication

Additional injector codes can indicate a shared power or wiring problem.

2. Check freeze-frame data

Freeze-frame information can show the conditions under which P0268 was recorded.

Engine RPM, coolant temperature, engine load, battery voltage, and other available parameters can help determine whether the fault occurs during starting, idle, acceleration, or higher engine load.

3. Inspect the cylinder #3 injector connector

Disconnect the connector according to the manufacturer's procedure and inspect the terminals.

Look for corrosion, bent pins, contamination, loose connections, or damaged locking mechanisms.

4. Inspect the wiring

Follow the injector wiring back into the harness.

Look for wires that are:

  • Melted

  • Chafed

  • Pinched

  • Broken

  • Oil-soaked

  • Repaired incorrectly

  • Touching other power circuits

Pay particular attention to areas close to the engine, exhaust components, and brackets where vibration can damage the harness.

5. Check the circuit for an unintended power connection

If the wiring diagram indicates that the injector control circuit should not be at battery voltage under the test conditions, the circuit should be checked for an unintended connection to a power source.

This is where a vehicle-specific wiring diagram becomes extremely important.

6. Test the injector

The injector's electrical characteristics should be compared with the manufacturer's specifications.

Depending on the injector design, diagnosis may involve resistance, current draw, activation testing, or an oscilloscope waveform.

Do not rely on a generic injector resistance value because different injector technologies can have very different electrical characteristics.

An oscilloscope can provide much more information than a simple multimeter in many injector-circuit diagnoses.

If multiple injectors have related electrical codes, inspect the common power supply, grounds, fuses, relays, and harness sections.

A single problem in a shared circuit can produce multiple injector-related DTCs.

9. Test the ECM driver if necessary

If the injector and wiring have passed the appropriate tests, the ECM's injector driver may need to be evaluated.

This should generally be one of the final steps rather than the first assumption.

Should the Injector Be Replaced Immediately?

No.

Replacing the injector may solve P0268 if the injector has an internal electrical fault, but replacing it without testing the circuit can waste money.

For example, if the actual problem is a wire shorted to battery voltage, a new injector will not repair the wiring fault.

Likewise, if the connector has a loose terminal, the new injector may continue to experience the same problem.

The correct repair depends on what the electrical tests actually reveal.

Can You Drive With P0268?

Short-distance driving may be possible if the engine is running normally and the fault is intermittent, but the vehicle should be diagnosed as soon as practical.

Driving should be avoided or minimized if the engine has:

  • Severe shaking

  • Strong misfire

  • Major power loss

  • Frequent stalling

  • Heavy smoke

  • Unusual engine noise

  • A flashing Check Engine Light

A severe injector-control problem can cause poor combustion and increased emissions. On gasoline engines, significant misfire can also result in excessive heat entering the catalytic converter and potentially cause expensive damage.
