P0271 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High

P0271 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 4.

The most important part of this definition is “Circuit High.” It refers to the electrical behavior of the injector circuit, not to high fuel pressure, excessive fuel quantity, high engine RPM, or high cylinder pressure.

P0271 is therefore primarily an electrical circuit fault code. The injector itself can be the cause, but the wiring, connector, power supply, or ECM driver can also be responsible.

What Does P0271 Mean in Practice?

The ECM controls the cylinder 4 injector by switching its electrical circuit on and off according to the engine's operating conditions.

The exact control strategy varies between engines. Some systems provide the injector with a common power supply and control it through the ECM, while others use different high-side or low-side driver arrangements.

When the ECM detects an electrical condition outside the expected range—such as voltage remaining too high when the circuit should be switching—it can store P0271.

This means the correct diagnostic question is not simply:

“Is cylinder 4's injector bad?”

It is:

“Why is the ECM seeing an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit?”

What Can Cause P0271?

Several faults can produce this code:

  • Faulty cylinder 4 fuel injector

  • Open circuit in the injector wiring

  • Short to battery voltage

  • Damaged injector control wire

  • Broken wire inside the harness

  • Corroded injector connector

  • Loose or poorly tensioned terminal

  • Injector connector not fully seated

  • Damaged injector power supply

  • Poor connection in a shared injector power circuit

  • Harness damage from heat or vibration

  • Internal electrical failure of the injector

  • ECM injector driver fault

A wiring problem is often overlooked because the harness may look perfectly normal externally.

“High” Does Not Mean Too Much Fuel

This is a common misunderstanding with injector circuit codes.

P0271 does not mean that cylinder 4 is receiving too much fuel.

The word “High” describes the electrical signal or voltage condition detected by the ECM.

For example, a control wire shorted to battery voltage can create a high electrical condition. An open circuit or disconnected injector can also cause the ECM to see an unexpected voltage state, depending on the system design.

Therefore, fuel pressure and injector flow should not be confused with the electrical meaning of this code.

The Injector May Be Completely Healthy

An injector is only one part of the circuit.

Consider a situation where the cylinder 4 injector is functioning normally but its control wire has been damaged and is touching a battery-voltage source.

The ECM can detect the abnormal electrical condition and set P0271 even though the injector itself is mechanically fine.

The same can happen with:

  • A damaged connector

  • A loose terminal

  • An open wire

  • Corrosion

  • A wiring harness rubbed against another component

  • A problem in a shared injector supply

This is why replacing the injector immediately is not a proper diagnosis.

Start With All Stored Codes

The first step should be to scan the vehicle for all stored and pending DTCs, rather than looking at P0271 in isolation.

If several injector circuit codes appear simultaneously, look for a common electrical problem.

For example, multiple injector codes can point toward:

  • Shared injector power supply

  • Fuse or relay problem

  • Common harness damage

  • Poor engine ground

  • Power-distribution problem

  • ECM supply voltage problem

If P0271 is the only injector circuit code, concentrate more closely on cylinder 4.

Inspect the Cylinder 4 Injector Connector

Begin with a visual inspection.

Check the injector connector for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Terminals pushed backward into the connector

  • Broken locking tabs

  • Oil contamination

  • Water contamination

  • Damaged wiring immediately behind the connector

A connector does not have to be visibly broken to cause an electrical fault.

A terminal with insufficient contact tension can intermittently lose electrical contact as the engine vibrates.

Inspect the Harness Carefully

Follow the injector wiring from cylinder 4 back toward the main engine harness.

Look for:

  • Melted insulation

  • Chafing

  • Pinched wires

  • Broken conductors

  • Previous repairs

  • Poor-quality splice connections

  • Harness sections touching hot components

  • Wiring stretched too tightly

Engine movement can also expose an intermittent fault that cannot be reproduced when the vehicle is stationary.

If P0271 appears during acceleration, for example, harness movement and vibration should be considered.

Use the Wiring Diagram

The next step is to identify the exact injector circuit architecture.

The manufacturer's wiring diagram should establish:

  • Injector power supply

  • Injector control wire

  • ECM pin

  • Shared circuits

  • Fuse/relay connections

  • Ground paths

  • Driver configuration

This is important because injector control systems are not identical across all vehicles.

There is no universal injector voltage test that applies to every engine.

Testing should follow the manufacturer's specifications.

Check the Injector Power Supply

Verify that the injector is receiving the correct electrical supply.

Depending on the system, several injectors may share the same power source.

This is why a problem affecting multiple injectors should immediately raise suspicion of a common circuit rather than several simultaneous injector failures.

Voltage should be checked under the conditions specified by the manufacturer, and voltage-drop testing may be necessary to identify resistance in the power or ground path.

Test the Control Circuit for a Short to Voltage

Because P0271 describes a high electrical condition, a short to battery voltage is one of the important possibilities.

The technician should determine whether the injector control wire is being held at an abnormal voltage when it should not be.

However, the correct test depends on whether the injector is controlled on the high side, low side, or through a more sophisticated current-controlled system.

Do not simply ground an injector control wire or apply battery voltage to it as a test unless the manufacturer's procedure specifically calls for it.

Incorrect testing can damage the injector driver inside the ECM.

Check for an Open Circuit

An open wire can also cause abnormal circuit behavior.

The conductor may be broken:

  • Inside the insulation

  • Near the connector

  • Inside a harness bend

  • At a previous repair

  • Near an area exposed to engine movement

A basic continuity test can identify a completely open wire, but it does not necessarily prove that the wiring can carry the required current under operating conditions.

A voltage-drop or loaded-circuit test can provide more useful information in some situations.

Test the Injector

The cylinder 4 injector should also be tested electrically.

Depending on the injector type, resistance measurements may identify:

  • An open injector coil

  • A shorted injector coil

  • An obvious deviation from specification

But resistance alone is not sufficient to prove that an injector is healthy.

An injector can have normal resistance and still have:

  • Restricted flow

  • Poor spray pattern

  • Mechanical sticking

  • Contamination

  • Incorrect fuel delivery

Electrical testing and mechanical injector testing are therefore separate parts of the diagnosis.

Oscilloscope Testing Can Be Extremely Useful

When the fault is difficult to reproduce, an oscilloscope can provide much more information than a basic multimeter.

The cylinder 4 injector waveform can be compared with a known-good injector.

This can reveal abnormalities in:

  • Control voltage

  • Switching behavior

  • Current rise

  • Injector opening event

  • Inductive voltage behavior

  • Driver operation

  • Circuit interruptions

  • Electrical noise

For intermittent P0271 faults, waveform comparison can sometimes identify a problem that disappears before a conventional resistance test is performed.

Can P0271 Cause a Misfire?

Yes.

If the ECM cannot control the cylinder 4 injector correctly, fuel delivery can be interrupted or become abnormal.

The engine may then develop:

  • Rough idle

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Loss of power

  • Engine vibration

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Difficult starting

  • Cylinder 4 misfire

A related code such as P0304 – Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected may therefore be stored at the same time.

If P0271 and P0304 appear together, the injector circuit becomes an important part of the investigation.

P0271 After Engine or Injector Work

If P0271 appeared immediately after maintenance, do not overlook something that was disturbed during the repair.

For example:

  • Injector connector not fully locked

  • Harness pulled during component removal

  • Wire trapped beneath a component

  • Connector contaminated

  • Injector installed incorrectly

  • Wiring routed against a hot component

This is especially relevant when the vehicle operated normally before the repair and developed the code immediately afterward.

Intermittent P0271 Faults

An intermittent injector circuit problem can be more difficult to diagnose than a permanent fault.

A wire may make perfect contact when the engine is cold and stationary but lose contact when:

  • The engine reaches operating temperature

  • The harness vibrates

  • The engine moves under load

  • The vehicle travels over rough roads

In these cases, freeze-frame data, harness inspection, connector testing, and waveform monitoring can be more useful than simply clearing the code and waiting for it to return.

P0271 on Gasoline and Diesel Engines

The exact diagnostic procedure depends on the injection system.

A conventional gasoline port injector is electrically different from a modern common-rail diesel injector.

Modern diesel injectors can use specialized driver circuits and operating strategies, sometimes involving considerably different electrical conditions.

Therefore, do not apply a generic resistance or voltage specification to every injector.

Always identify the engine and injection system before performing electrical tests.

What About the ECM?

The ECM can theoretically be responsible for P0271 if its injector driver has failed.

However, this should generally be a late-stage diagnosis.

Before condemning the ECM, verify:

  • Injector operation

  • Injector connector

  • Wiring continuity

  • Short-to-voltage condition

  • Short-to-ground condition where applicable

  • Power supply

  • Voltage drop

  • Driver command

An ECM should not be replaced simply because the injector circuit code remains after an injector has been changed.

P0271 vs P0270 and P0272

These codes describe different problems associated with cylinder 4.

P0270 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low

The ECM has detected an abnormally low electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

P0271 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High

The ECM has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

P0272 – Cylinder 4 Contribution / Balance Fault

The ECM has determined that cylinder 4 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.

The difference between P0271 and P0272 is particularly important.

P0271 points toward the electrical injector circuit.

P0272 points toward cylinder performance/contribution and can be caused by fuel, ignition, compression, valve-train, timing, or other engine problems.

A Practical Diagnostic Order for P0271

A logical diagnostic sequence is:

  1. Scan all stored and pending DTCs.

  2. Check freeze-frame data.

  3. Confirm the physical location of cylinder 4 using manufacturer service information.

  4. Inspect the cylinder 4 injector connector.

  5. Inspect the injector harness for damage.

  6. Check the injector power supply.

  7. Identify the ECM control circuit from the wiring diagram.

  8. Check for an open circuit and unwanted shorts.

  9. Perform voltage-drop tests where appropriate.

  10. Test the injector's electrical characteristics.

  11. Compare the injector control waveform with a known-good cylinder if necessary.

  12. Perform mechanical injector testing if an electrical fault is not found.

  13. Test the ECM injector driver only after the external circuit has been verified.

  14. Clear the code and verify the repair under the conditions that originally triggered P0271.

Final Diagnosis

P0271 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High means the ECM has detected an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

It does not automatically mean that cylinder 4's injector is defective, and it does not mean that the engine has excessive fuel pressure.

The actual fault may be inside the injector, but it may just as easily be a shorted control wire, open circuit, damaged connector, poor terminal contact, shared power-supply problem, or ECM driver issue.

The correct repair is therefore to diagnose the complete electrical circuit rather than replacing the injector based solely on the code. Once the electrical fault is identified and repaired, injector operation and cylinder performance should be verified to make sure P0271 does not return.
