P0281 Cylinder 7 Contribution / Balance Fault
P0281 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormal power contribution or combustion balance from cylinder #7.
In simple terms, the engine computer believes that cylinder #7 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.
This does not automatically mean that the cylinder #7 fuel injector is defective. The injector is one possibility, but the problem can also come from fuel pressure, injector wiring, ignition, compression, valve operation, engine timing, air distribution, or other conditions that affect combustion.
What Does “Contribution / Balance” Mean?
Every cylinder in an engine should produce a reasonably similar amount of torque during its combustion cycle.
The ECM can monitor the small changes in crankshaft speed that occur as individual cylinders fire. If cylinder #7 produces noticeably less torque than expected, the control module may determine that its contribution is insufficient and store P0281.
The word “balance” refers to how evenly the cylinders are contributing to overall engine operation.
For example, if cylinders 1–6 and 8 are producing normal combustion but cylinder #7 is consistently weaker, the ECM may identify a cylinder contribution/balance problem.
The code therefore describes an engine operating condition, rather than identifying a particular failed component.
Cylinder #7 Does Not Have a Universal Location
The physical location of cylinder #7 depends on the engine manufacturer and engine configuration.
This is especially important on V6, V8, V10 and V12 engines. Cylinder numbering is not necessarily arranged in the same physical order across different manufacturers.

However, P0281 and a conventional cylinder-specific misfire code are not necessarily describing exactly the same thing.
P0281 focuses on cylinder contribution/balance, while a misfire DTC indicates that the ECM has detected combustion events that are not occurring as expected.
It is therefore possible to see P0281 together with a misfire code.
How P0281 Should Be Diagnosed
A proper diagnosis should begin by determining why cylinder #7 is contributing less power, rather than immediately replacing the injector.
1. Scan for all stored DTCs
Start with a complete scan.

This can help determine whether the problem is isolated to #7 or whether the entire engine is experiencing a broader fueling or mechanical problem.
The exact acceptable values are manufacturer-specific.
3. Inspect the injector and connector
Check the cylinder #7 injector and its connector for:

Do not assume that normal pressure at idle proves that the fuel system is healthy under load.

P0281 – Cylinder 7 Contribution / Balance Fault
This indicates that cylinder #7 is not contributing or balancing with the other cylinders as expected.
P0282 – Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit Low
This indicates an abnormally low electrical condition in the cylinder #8 injector circuit.
The distinction is important because P0281 is primarily about cylinder performance/contribution, whereas P0280 and P0282 are injector circuit electrical codes.
Is It Safe to Drive With P0281?
It depends on how severely cylinder #7 is affected.
If the engine is running smoothly and the Check Engine Light is steady, a short drive for diagnosis may be possible.

The most efficient approach is to compare cylinder #7 with the other cylinders and work through the systems that determine combustion: fuel delivery, injector operation, ignition where applicable, compression, valve operation, air supply and engine timing.
If the fault follows an injector or another component during a controlled diagnostic test, the cause becomes much clearer. If the problem remains with cylinder #7, attention should shift toward wiring, fuel supply, compression, valvetrain or timing.
