P0564 Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "A" Circuit

The P0564 trouble code indicates that the vehicle’s control module has detected a problem with the Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "A" circuit.

This circuit is responsible for receiving commands from the cruise-control switches. Depending on the vehicle, the "A" input may be connected to several functions such as SET, RESUME, ACCEL, COAST, ON, or OFF.

The important point is that P0564 does not identify a specific failed component. It tells us that the control module has detected an abnormal condition in the electrical circuit used to interpret one or more cruise-control commands.

What Is the Multi-Function Input "A" Circuit?

Cruise-control switches often look simple from the driver's perspective, but electrically they can be more complicated.

On many vehicles, several buttons share a common signal circuit. Instead of giving every button its own separate wire, the manufacturer may use a resistor network.

Each button produces a different electrical value.

For example, when the driver presses one button, the control module might see one voltage. Another button produces a different voltage, allowing the module to determine which command the driver selected.

This is why a problem with a single switch, resistor, connector, or wire can affect several cruise-control functions at the same time.

The exact circuit design varies considerably between manufacturers, so the vehicle's wiring diagram is essential when diagnosing P0564.

What Does P0564 Actually Tell You?

Unlike codes that specifically say Circuit Low, Circuit High, Circuit Open, or Range/Performance, P0564 is a more general circuit fault.

The control module has detected that the Multi-Function Input "A" circuit is not operating as expected.

The abnormality may be caused by:

  • An incorrect voltage

  • An incorrect resistance

  • An intermittent signal

  • A missing signal

  • An unwanted voltage

  • A short circuit

  • Poor electrical contact

  • An internal problem with the switch assembly

Therefore, seeing P0564 does not mean that the cruise-control switch should immediately be replaced.

Common Causes of P0564

Faulty cruise-control switch assembly

The switches can develop worn or contaminated contacts. If several cruise-control buttons are connected through the same input circuit, a problem inside the switch assembly can affect multiple commands.

Incorrect resistor value

On resistor-based systems, the control module expects specific electrical values for different button positions.

If a resistor inside the switch assembly changes value, the module may no longer be able to correctly identify the driver's command.

Damaged wiring

A broken, partially broken, chafed, or shorted wire can interfere with the Multi-Function Input "A" signal.

An intermittent wire is particularly difficult to diagnose because the system may work normally most of the time.

Loose or corroded connector

A connector with corrosion, moisture, loose terminals, or poor terminal tension can alter the signal reaching the control module.

Faulty clock spring

If the cruise-control switches are mounted on the steering wheel, the signal normally passes through the clock spring.

The clock spring has to maintain electrical connections while the steering wheel rotates. Wear or internal damage can cause intermittent cruise-control switch signals.

Reference voltage or ground problem

A shared reference or ground problem can affect the voltage measured by the control module and make multiple cruise-control commands appear incorrect.

Short to ground or voltage

A signal wire contacting ground or another voltage source can produce an abnormal input.

Control-module fault

A problem with the module's input circuitry is possible, but this should normally be considered after the external circuit has been tested.

What Symptoms Can P0564 Cause?

The symptoms depend on which functions use the Multi-Function Input "A" circuit and how the vehicle's cruise-control system is designed.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Cruise control will not activate.

  • SET does not work.

  • RESUME does not work.

  • ACCEL or COAST does not respond.

  • OFF or ON commands behave incorrectly.

  • Cruise control works intermittently.

  • Several cruise-control buttons stop working simultaneously.

  • Cruise control disengages unexpectedly.

  • The cruise-control warning light illuminates.

  • P0564 remains stored after the ignition is cycled.

One particularly useful clue is multiple cruise-control buttons failing at the same time. When several commands are affected together, a shared signal circuit, connector, clock spring, reference supply, or switch assembly becomes more suspicious than an individual button.

Diagnosing P0564

The most useful starting point is a complete scan of the vehicle.

Check for stored, pending, and related DTCs. Codes involving the brake switch, steering-wheel controls, ABS/ESC, communication networks, or other cruise-control inputs may help identify the source of the problem.

If the scan tool provides live data for the cruise-control switch inputs, monitor the available parameters while operating each button.

The goal is to determine whether the control module sees a clear and repeatable change when the switches are operated.

For example, if pressing SET produces no change in the input value, but pressing other buttons produces the expected changes, the SET portion of the circuit can be investigated further.

If all of the commands associated with Input "A" are missing or incorrect, the shared portion of the circuit becomes much more important.

Testing the Switch Circuit

If the vehicle uses a resistor-based input, the switch assembly should be tested using the manufacturer's specified resistance or voltage values.

Do not assume that a particular voltage or resistance is universal.

The correct values depend on the vehicle's circuit design.

The important thing is whether the signal produced by each switch position corresponds to the values expected by the control module.

A switch may also need to be tested while being repeatedly operated. A worn contact can produce a correct reading sometimes and an incorrect reading at other times.

This is one reason an intermittent P0564 can be missed during a quick resistance check.

Checking the Clock Spring

For steering-wheel-mounted cruise controls, the clock spring should be considered when the fault is intermittent.

Because the clock spring rotates whenever the steering wheel turns, its internal conductors experience repeated movement throughout the vehicle's life.

If the signal disappears or changes when the steering wheel is moved, the clock spring or its associated wiring becomes a strong suspect.

Other steering-wheel functions can provide additional clues. If several steering-wheel controls are experiencing intermittent problems, investigating the clock spring and steering-wheel wiring makes sense.

However, replacing the clock spring solely because P0564 is stored is not a proper diagnosis.

Inspecting Wiring and Connectors

The signal circuit should be inspected from the cruise-control switch toward the relevant control module.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Connector corrosion

  • Loose terminals

  • Damaged pins

  • Chafed wires

  • Broken conductors

  • Pinched wiring

  • Previous repairs

  • Moisture contamination

  • Wiring around the steering column

An electrical circuit can look perfectly normal while still having an intermittent fault.

For this reason, a wiggle test while monitoring the actual input signal can be useful when the problem cannot be reproduced easily.

A continuity test by itself may not be sufficient. A wire can show continuity with no load but develop excessive resistance when it is moved or subjected to operating conditions.

Why the Cruise Control Switch Should Not Be Replaced Immediately

P0564 points to the Multi-Function Input "A" circuit, not directly to the switch.

This distinction is important.

If the switch is replaced without checking the signal circuit, the problem can remain if the actual cause is:

  • Clock spring damage

  • Wiring resistance

  • Connector corrosion

  • Incorrect reference voltage

  • Poor ground

  • A short circuit

  • A damaged terminal

Likewise, replacing a control module simply because P0564 returns can lead to an unnecessary and expensive repair.

The diagnosis should follow the electrical path and establish where the signal stops behaving correctly.

P0564 and Resistor-Based Cruise Controls

Resistor-based cruise-control systems deserve special attention because several commands can share a single input.

Imagine that the control module expects different voltage levels for different buttons.

If the circuit develops additional resistance because of corrosion or a damaged connector, more than one button can suddenly appear incorrect.

Likewise, if the reference voltage changes, the module may misinterpret several commands at once.

This explains why P0564 can sometimes be associated with multiple apparently unrelated cruise-control button problems.

The fault does not necessarily exist inside every individual button. They may simply share the same electrical path.

P0564 vs. Individual Cruise Control Signal Codes

P0564 is broader than a code specifically identifying one command such as SET, OFF, or ACCEL.

For example, if a vehicle also stores a code specifically related to the SET signal, that additional code can help narrow the diagnosis.

If P0564 appears by itself, the technician should determine which functions use Multi-Function Input "A" on that particular vehicle and then examine the common electrical path.

This is where manufacturer-specific wiring information becomes extremely valuable.

Can You Drive With P0564?

P0564 generally does not indicate that the engine, transmission, or normal accelerator system has failed.

The vehicle can often still be driven normally, but the cruise-control system may be disabled or unreliable.

Because the problem involves driver commands to the cruise-control system, it is better to avoid relying on cruise control until the signal fault has been properly diagnosed.

The Most Important Point About P0564

P0564 means that the control module has detected an abnormality in the Cruise Control Multi-Function Input "A" circuit.

It does not automatically mean that the cruise-control switch is defective.

The problem can be anywhere along the signal path, including the switch assembly, resistor network, wiring, connector, clock spring, reference circuit, ground, or control-module input.

The most effective diagnosis is to determine what electrical signal the control module is receiving when each cruise-control button is operated, and then compare that signal with the manufacturer's specifications.

If several cruise-control functions fail together, concentrate on the shared circuit rather than replacing individual switches one by one.
