P0570 Cruise Control "ACCEL" Signal Malfunction

The P0570 trouble code indicates that the vehicle’s control module has detected a malfunction in the ACCEL input signal of the cruise control system. The ACCEL command is normally generated when the driver presses the cruise control switch used to increase the set speed or accelerate the vehicle while cruise control is active.

This code does not automatically mean that the cruise control module itself is defective. It means that the signal associated with the ACCEL command is not behaving as the control module expects. The actual cause can be the switch, wiring, connectors, clock spring, signal circuit, or even the way the input signal is being interpreted by the control module.

What Does the ACCEL Signal Do?

The cruise control system needs several inputs from the driver. Depending on the vehicle, the steering-wheel or stalk-mounted controls may include commands such as:

  • ON

  • OFF

  • SET

  • COAST

  • RESUME

  • ACCEL

The ACCEL function generally tells the cruise control system to increase the vehicle's speed or raise the stored cruise-control speed.

On many vehicles, these buttons do not have a completely separate electrical wire for every function. Several switches may work through a resistor network, producing different voltage levels on the same input circuit.

For example, the control module may recognize one voltage range as SET, another as RESUME, and another as ACCEL. Therefore, a problem with the resistance, wiring, connector, or voltage in the switch circuit can cause the module to interpret the ACCEL command incorrectly.

What Does "Signal Malfunction" Mean?

The wording "Signal Malfunction" is important.

P0570 is not simply a Circuit Low, Circuit High, or Circuit Open code. Instead, the control module has determined that the ACCEL signal is incorrect, implausible, missing when expected, or otherwise not behaving according to the programmed logic.

This can happen even when the ACCEL button appears to work intermittently.

For example, pressing the ACCEL button might sometimes increase the cruise speed normally, while at other times the module sees an unexpected voltage. The system may then disable cruise control and store P0570.

Common Causes of P0570

One of the first things to inspect is the cruise control switch itself. Internal contacts can wear, become contaminated, or develop increased electrical resistance. A switch can therefore feel normal mechanically while producing an incorrect electrical signal.

Other possible causes include:

Faulty ACCEL switch

The internal contacts may be worn or damaged. If the switch uses a resistor network, the resistance associated with the ACCEL position may also be incorrect.

Damaged wiring

A partially broken wire can produce an intermittent signal. This is especially important in steering-wheel-mounted systems because the wiring can experience repeated movement.

Poor connector contact

Loose terminals, corrosion, moisture, or poor pin tension can alter the signal reaching the control module.

Faulty clock spring

When cruise-control buttons are installed on the steering wheel, their electrical signals commonly pass through the steering-wheel clock spring. A damaged or worn clock spring can cause intermittent cruise-control switch signals.

A particularly useful clue is when the cruise control behaves differently depending on steering-wheel position. However, this should be treated as a diagnostic clue rather than proof that the clock spring is defective.

Incorrect switch resistance

On resistor-based cruise-control systems, the control module expects specific voltage or resistance ranges for each button. A switch with incorrect resistance can cause the ACCEL command to be interpreted incorrectly.

Short circuit or unwanted voltage

A short to ground, short to another circuit, or unwanted voltage entering the signal circuit can change the voltage seen by the control module.

Power or ground problems

Some cruise-control switch assemblies depend on a reference voltage or electrical supply from another module. An unstable supply or ground can produce strange or intermittent switch signals.

Control-module or software issue

This is possible, but it should generally be considered after the switch and its electrical circuit have been properly checked.

How P0570 Can Affect Cruise Control

The ACCEL command is part of the driver's control interface, so the symptoms depend on how the vehicle's cruise-control system is designed.

You may notice that:

  • Cruise control will not activate.

  • The cruise system works, but ACCEL does not.

  • Pressing ACCEL produces no response.

  • The cruise speed changes unexpectedly.

  • Cruise control disengages after using the ACCEL button.

  • The cruise-control warning light appears.

  • The system works intermittently.

  • P0570 returns shortly after being cleared.

In some vehicles, the control module may disable the entire cruise-control system when it detects an unreliable input. This is a normal safety strategy because the module cannot confidently determine what command the driver is giving.

Diagnosing P0570 Correctly

A good diagnosis begins by determining what the control module actually sees when the ACCEL switch is operated.

Start with the scan tool and check for other stored or pending DTCs. If there are additional cruise-control, steering-wheel control, brake-switch, ABS, or communication codes, they may provide an important clue.

The freeze-frame data can also be useful. It may show the vehicle speed and operating conditions when the fault was detected.

Next, operate the cruise-control buttons while monitoring live data if the vehicle provides a parameter such as cruise switch status, ACCEL switch status, or steering-wheel switch input.

If the scan tool shows that the ACCEL command changes correctly every time the button is pressed, the problem may lie elsewhere. If the module does not recognize the ACCEL command, the switch circuit deserves closer attention.

Checking the ACCEL Switch

The switch should be tested according to the manufacturer's specifications.

If the vehicle uses a resistor-based switch circuit, measure the resistance or voltage associated with the ACCEL position and compare it with the specified value.

Do not assume that a generic resistance value applies to every vehicle. Different manufacturers use different switch designs and voltage thresholds.

A useful test is to monitor the signal while repeatedly pressing and releasing the ACCEL button.

The signal should change in a stable and predictable manner. If it jumps, disappears, remains fixed, or produces an unexpected value, the switch or its wiring may be responsible.

Inspecting the Steering Wheel and Clock Spring

If the cruise controls are located on the steering wheel, the clock spring becomes an important part of the circuit.

An intermittent P0570 that appears when the steering wheel is turned can point toward a problem in the clock spring or the wiring leading to the steering-wheel controls.

However, the clock spring should not be replaced solely because P0570 is present. The switch signal and wiring should be tested first.

If other steering-wheel functions, such as audio controls or horn operation, are also malfunctioning, that additional information can make a clock-spring or steering-wheel wiring problem more likely.

Checking Wiring and Connectors

The electrical path between the cruise-control switch and the control module should be inspected carefully.

Look for:

  • Broken or stretched wires

  • Damaged insulation

  • Corroded terminals

  • Loose connector pins

  • Poor terminal contact

  • Water contamination

  • Previous repair work

  • Wiring trapped or pinched around the steering column

An intermittent fault can be difficult to find because the wiring may look perfectly normal during a visual inspection.

A continuity test alone is not always enough. A wire can show continuity while still having excessive resistance when it is moved or loaded.

For an intermittent P0570, a wiggle test while monitoring the switch signal can sometimes reveal the fault.

Why You Should Not Immediately Replace the Cruise Control Module

P0570 identifies a problem with the ACCEL signal, not necessarily a defective control module.

Replacing the module without verifying the input signal can result in an unnecessary and expensive repair.

The diagnostic sequence should generally move from the simplest possibilities toward the more complex ones:

ACCEL switch → connector → wiring → clock spring where applicable → signal/reference circuits → control module

The exact circuit arrangement depends on the vehicle.

Can P0570 Be Caused by the Brake Switch?

It is not normally the primary definition of P0570, because this code specifically concerns the ACCEL signal. However, the cruise-control system uses several safety-related inputs simultaneously.

If there are brake-switch codes or implausible brake-switch data stored along with P0570, they should be investigated rather than treating P0570 in isolation.

A cruise-control system may refuse to operate when it receives conflicting driver-input information.

Is P0570 a Serious Problem?

P0570 is generally not an indication of an engine or transmission failure. The vehicle will usually remain drivable because the basic accelerator and braking systems are independent of the cruise-control ACCEL command.

The main consequence is that cruise control may become unavailable or unreliable.

However, an unreliable cruise-control input should not be ignored. If the system is receiving an incorrect command from the steering-wheel controls, the safest approach is to diagnose the fault before continuing to rely on cruise control.

The Most Important Point About P0570

P0570 should be understood as an ACCEL command signal problem, not as a direct diagnosis of a particular component.

The control module is essentially saying:

"The electrical signal associated with the cruise-control ACCEL command is not behaving as expected."

The fault could be inside the switch, in a resistor network, at a connector, in the wiring, through the steering-wheel clock spring, or at the module input.

For that reason, the most reliable diagnosis is based on live data, voltage or resistance measurements, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer-specific specifications rather than simply replacing the cruise-control switch or control module.

If the ACCEL button works intermittently, especially when the steering wheel is moved, the switch circuit and clock spring deserve particular attention. If the ACCEL command never appears in live data, electrical testing of the switch and signal circuit should come before replacing expensive components.
