When P0576 appears, the vehicle's control module has detected that the electrical signal coming from the cruise control input circuit is lower than the expected value.

Consider a resistor-based switch circuit.
If the switch is supposed to produce a particular resistance when SET is pressed, but the circuit is accidentally connected to ground, the control module will see a completely different voltage.
The switch itself may be perfectly good.
The same principle applies to the clock spring and wiring.
This is why measuring the circuit is much more useful than simply replacing components.
How to Diagnose P0576
Start by scanning the vehicle for all stored and pending diagnostic codes.
If other codes relating to the brake switch, steering-wheel controls, reference voltage, communication, or cruise control are present, they may provide an important clue.
Next, check the actual operation of the cruise control switches.
Try each available command and determine whether all functions have stopped working or only one particular function is affected.
If the entire cruise control switch group is inactive, a common circuit problem becomes more likely.
If only one button behaves incorrectly, the switch assembly or its internal resistor network may deserve more attention.
Check the Electrical Signal
The next step is to determine how the vehicle's cruise control input circuit is designed.
If the manufacturer specifies a particular voltage range for the input, measure the signal and compare it with the specification.
If the system uses resistance-based switch inputs, measure the resistance of the switch positions and compare the readings with the manufacturer's values.

The control module may show the status of individual inputs or display which cruise control command it believes is being selected.
Press the buttons one by one and observe the data.
If pressing a button produces no change, the signal may not be reaching the module.
If the module reports an unexpected command, the switch circuit may be producing the wrong voltage or resistance.
If the input changes without the driver touching the controls, an intermittent electrical problem becomes more likely.
Check Power, Grounds and Connectors
Before suspecting the control module, verify the basics.
A weak power supply or poor ground can cause abnormal input readings and create diagnostic codes that appear to point toward a particular circuit.

But replacing an expensive module before checking a damaged wire or short to ground is rarely a good diagnostic decision.
Can You Drive With P0576?
In most cases, yes.
P0576 generally affects the cruise control function rather than the basic operation of the vehicle.
The cruise control may be disabled because the control module cannot reliably interpret the driver's commands.
This is actually an appropriate safety response. If the module cannot determine whether the driver is pressing SET, RESUME, or another control, it should not allow the cruise control system to operate unpredictably.
If other fault codes are present, however, the vehicle should be evaluated based on those additional faults as well.

If the vehicle uses a resistor-based input circuit, measuring the resistance and the resulting voltage at the appropriate points can quickly narrow down the problem.
The important thing is not to treat P0576 as a parts-replacement code. The code tells you what the control module sees; the diagnostic process has to determine which component or section of the circuit is actually responsible for that signal being low.
