The symptoms depend heavily on the vehicle's steering and engine-control architecture.

  • Engine idle dropping when the steering wheel is turned

  • Rough idle during steering maneuvers

  • Engine hesitation at low speed

  • Engine nearly stalling while parking

  • Engine stalling during heavy steering load

  • Power steering warning on some vehicles

  • Cruise control or other functions being disabled on some vehicles

  • No noticeable drivability symptoms at all

Can P0554 Affect Engine Idle?

If the PSP signal intermittently disappears, the ECU may not always know that the steering system is placing additional load on the engine.

1. Faulty PSP pressure sensor or switch

The sensor or switch itself can develop an intermittent internal fault.

A pressure switch may have worn or contaminated contacts, while a variable sensor may produce an unstable signal as the internal sensing element deteriorates.

2. Damaged wiring

The wiring near the power steering pump and pressure switch can be exposed to heat, vibration, movement, and fluid contamination.

A wire can be internally broken while appearing completely normal from the outside.

This is one of the most important possibilities with an intermittent code.

3. Loose or corroded connector

A connector that looks clean externally can still have poor terminal tension or corrosion inside the connector.

Steering-system components can also be exposed to fluid contamination, which can affect electrical connections.

4. Poor electrical ground

If the sensor shares a ground circuit with other components, a poor ground can cause unstable readings.

A sensor may appear defective when the actual problem is the ground circuit.

5. Reference-voltage problem

The freeze-frame data can show engine speed, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, battery voltage, throttle position, and other parameters at the moment the ECU detected the fault.

This can provide an important clue.

For example, if the code repeatedly occurs at very low engine speed while the steering wheel is being turned, the fault may be related to the actual steering-load event.

If it occurs at random engine speeds while the steering is not being operated, an electrical wiring problem becomes more suspicious.

Inspect the PSP Connector and Wiring

The connector should be inspected carefully for:

  • Loose terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Corrosion

  • Fluid contamination

  • Damaged seals

  • Broken locking tabs

  • Wiring pulled tight

  • Chafed insulation

The harness should also be inspected along its entire accessible route.

Do not limit the inspection to the first few centimeters around the sensor.

An intermittent open circuit can occur several centimeters or even much farther away from the sensor.

  • Sensor ground

  • Signal circuit

The actual reference voltage should be measured rather than assumed.

A sensor receiving an unstable reference voltage can produce an unstable output even when the sensor itself is perfectly healthy.

Check the Signal While Turning the Steering Wheel

This is one of the most useful parts of the diagnosis.

Monitor the PSP signal while gradually increasing steering load.

On a variable sensor system, the signal should respond in a predictable manner according to the manufacturer's specifications.

If the electrical circuit tests correctly but the PSP signal changes because of actual hydraulic pressure, the mechanical steering system may need to be evaluated.

A pressure gauge can be used on applicable hydraulic systems to determine whether the pump is producing the correct pressure.

Can a Bad Power Steering Pump Cause P0554?

It can contribute in some vehicle designs, but it should not be the first assumption.

If the vehicle uses a pressure switch or sensor whose operation depends directly on hydraulic pressure, abnormal pump pressure can influence the signal.

However, the same code can be produced by an electrical problem such as an intermittent wire or connector.

The diagnostic process should therefore establish whether the electrical signal is failing independently of actual hydraulic pressure.

Can P0554 Cause a Check Engine Light Without Steering Problems?

Yes.

The vehicle may have completely normal steering assistance and still store P0554.

The reason is that the code concerns the information supplied to the engine control system, not necessarily the ability of the steering system to assist the driver.

A hydraulic power steering system can function normally while its pressure switch has an intermittent electrical fault.

What Should Be Replaced?

There is no universal replacement part for P0554.

Depending on the test results, the repair could involve:

  • Repairing damaged wiring

  • Repairing or replacing a connector

  • Cleaning or correcting electrical terminals

  • Replacing the PSP pressure switch

  • Replacing the PSP pressure sensor

  • Correcting a reference or ground problem

  • Repairing a hydraulic pressure problem

  • Addressing a power steering pump problem

  • Repairing a module or communication problem on vehicles with more complex architectures

The correct repair is determined by the test results, not by the trouble-code description alone.
