P0364 Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit Intermittent/Erratic (Bank 1)

When the engine control module detects an intermittent or unstable signal from the Bank 1 “B” camshaft position sensor, it can no longer reliably determine the camshaft’s exact position, which may be caused by a failing sensor, damaged wiring, poor connector contact, electrical interference, timing problems, or a mechanical issue affecting the camshaft or variable valve timing system.

What P0364 Actually Means

The camshaft position sensor provides the ECM with information about the rotational position and speed of the camshaft. This information is used together with crankshaft position data to control ignition timing, fuel injection, variable valve timing, and other engine functions.

With P0364, the problem is not simply that the ECM has received a signal that is too high or too low. Instead, the signal from the “B” camshaft position sensor on Bank 1 is becoming intermittent, inconsistent, or erratic.

The sensor may work normally most of the time and then suddenly produce a signal that disappears, changes unexpectedly, or does not match the expected camshaft position.

That intermittent nature is important because the vehicle may drive normally during one test and develop symptoms a few minutes later.

Understanding “B” and “Bank 1”

“Bank 1” identifies the side of the engine containing cylinder number 1 on engines with more than one cylinder bank.

“Sensor B” is a manufacturer-dependent designation. On many engines, the A/B terminology corresponds to different camshafts, often intake and exhaust, but this is not universal.

Therefore, the exact location of the sensor associated with P0364 should be confirmed using the vehicle manufacturer's service information rather than assuming that every engine uses the same B-sensor arrangement.

Why an Intermittent Camshaft Signal Causes Problems

The ECM needs a stable relationship between crankshaft and camshaft position.

If the camshaft signal suddenly disappears or becomes erratic, the ECM may temporarily lose confidence in where the camshaft is located. Depending on the engine strategy, it can compensate for the missing information for a period of time, but continued signal problems can affect engine operation.

This is why a vehicle with P0364 may behave completely normally at one moment and then suddenly develop a rough idle, hesitation, difficult starting, or a warning light.

The fault can also be strongly affected by engine temperature, vibration, RPM, and wiring movement.

Common Causes of P0364

Several different faults can create this code:

  • Faulty Bank 1 “B” camshaft position sensor

  • Damaged or loose sensor connector

  • Corroded or contaminated electrical terminals

  • Broken wire inside the harness

  • Wiring that has rubbed against the engine or another component

  • Poor sensor power supply or ground

  • Electrical interference affecting the sensor signal

  • Oil contamination around the sensor or connector

  • Incorrect sensor installation or excessive sensor-to-target clearance

  • Damaged camshaft reluctor or trigger wheel

  • Variable valve timing actuator or phaser problem

  • Low or contaminated engine oil affecting VVT operation

  • Timing chain or belt problems

  • Incorrect mechanical camshaft timing

  • Less commonly, an ECM or its circuitry problem

One particularly difficult situation is a wire that looks perfectly normal from the outside but has an internal break. The circuit may work when the engine is stationary and fail when vibration or engine movement changes the position of the harness.

Symptoms You May Notice

P0364 does not always produce dramatic symptoms.

Depending on how frequently the signal is lost and how the engine responds, the vehicle may experience:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Difficult starting

  • Longer cranking time

  • Intermittent stalling

  • Rough or unstable idle

  • Hesitation during acceleration

  • Reduced engine performance

  • Poor throttle response

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Engine entering a limited-performance strategy

Some vehicles may continue to run almost normally because the ECM can temporarily use alternative information when the camshaft signal becomes unavailable.

A Useful Clue: When Does the Fault Appear?

The conditions under which P0364 occurs can be more useful than simply clearing the code and seeing whether it comes back.

For example, if the code appears:

Only when the engine is hot:
The sensor or wiring may be affected by temperature-related resistance changes or thermal expansion.

When accelerating or driving over rough roads:
Harness movement, vibration, or a loose connector becomes more suspicious.

During starting:
A weak signal, sensor problem, incorrect air gap, or mechanical timing issue may deserve closer attention.

At specific engine speeds:
A damaged section of the reluctor wheel, wiring interference, or a sensor that loses signal at certain RPMs may be involved.

Along with other camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes:
Mechanical timing, VVT operation, or a common electrical problem should be investigated rather than replacing the sensor immediately.

How P0364 Should Be Diagnosed

A good diagnosis begins with the vehicle's wiring diagram and the manufacturer's specifications.

The first step is to inspect the Bank 1 “B” camshaft sensor, its connector, and the surrounding wiring. Look for damaged insulation, oil contamination, loose terminals, corrosion, stretched wires, and signs that the harness has been contacting moving or hot engine components.

The connector should not merely be unplugged and visually checked. Terminal tension and electrical contact can be important when the problem is intermittent.

Next, the sensor's power supply, ground, and signal circuit should be tested according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Don't Immediately Replace the Sensor

Because P0364 contains the words “Camshaft Position Sensor”, replacing the sensor is an understandable first reaction, but it is not necessarily the correct repair.

A sensor can produce an intermittent signal because the sensor itself is defective, but the same symptom can occur because its power supply is unstable, its ground is poor, its signal wire is damaged, or the mechanical target it is reading is damaged.

In some cases, the sensor is accurately reporting an unstable camshaft signal caused by a mechanical problem.

This distinction can save unnecessary parts replacement.

Live Data Can Be Very Valuable

A scan tool capable of displaying camshaft position data can help determine what is happening while the fault occurs.

The technician can compare the reported camshaft position with the expected or commanded position and, where supported, compare the camshaft and crankshaft signals.

If the camshaft signal suddenly drops out while the engine is running, the investigation can move toward the sensor and its electrical circuit.

If the signal remains present but the camshaft position moves outside the expected relationship, mechanical timing or VVT operation becomes more important.

For difficult intermittent faults, an oscilloscope can be even more useful because it allows the technician to observe the actual sensor waveform rather than relying only on scan-tool data.

Check the Mechanical Side Too

A stable electrical signal does not automatically mean the engine's mechanical timing is correct.

The camshaft position sensor reads a physical target associated with the camshaft. If the timing chain or belt has excessive movement, a VVT phaser is malfunctioning, or the camshaft timing is incorrect, the ECM can receive information that does not correspond to the expected engine position.

Engine oil condition should also be considered on engines where variable valve timing depends on oil pressure.

Incorrect oil level, unsuitable oil, contaminated oil, restricted oil passages, or a sticking VVT component can interfere with camshaft positioning and potentially create related fault codes.

Can P0364 Be Caused by the Timing Chain?

Yes, but P0364 does not automatically mean the timing chain is faulty.

A timing problem becomes more suspicious when P0364 appears together with camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes, difficult starting, repeated stalling, poor engine performance, or abnormal timing-chain noise.

A technician should establish whether the camshaft sensor signal itself is failing before moving into more extensive mechanical diagnosis.

Is It Safe to Drive With P0364?

That depends on the symptoms and the severity of the signal interruption.

If the engine starts easily and runs normally, a short trip to a repair facility may be possible in some vehicles. However, continued driving should not be treated as a solution.

If the engine is stalling, difficult to start, misfiring, losing significant power, or behaving unpredictably, driving becomes much less advisable. An intermittent camshaft signal can potentially develop into a no-start condition.

What Usually Fixes P0364?

The repair depends entirely on what testing identifies as the actual cause.

Possible repairs include:

  • Replacing the defective camshaft position sensor

  • Repairing damaged wiring

  • Repairing or replacing a connector or terminal

  • Correcting a power or ground problem

  • Cleaning or correcting contaminated electrical connections

  • Repairing the reluctor/trigger mechanism where applicable

  • Servicing the VVT system

  • Correcting engine oil-related problems

  • Repairing incorrect mechanical timing

  • Addressing a damaged timing chain or belt

  • Repairing an ECM circuit in rare cases

The important point is that P0364 is a signal-quality problem, not a guaranteed sensor-failure diagnosis.

The Most Important Diagnostic Point

An intermittent camshaft code should ideally be diagnosed while the fault is actually occurring.

If the vehicle arrives at a workshop running perfectly, simply clearing P0364 and replacing the sensor may not reveal the real problem. A better approach is to reproduce the conditions that trigger the code and monitor the sensor signal, wiring, camshaft data, and related engine parameters at the same time.

That is especially important with intermittent faults because the problem may disappear as soon as the vehicle stops moving or the engine cools down.

When P0364 is diagnosed this way, the goal is not just to make the warning light disappear—it is to determine why the Bank 1 “B” camshaft signal is becoming unreliable in the first place.
