Car owners naturally want to keep their vehicles in good condition, but automotive maintenance is surrounded by many rules that are repeated so often that they start to sound like facts. Some of these recommendations are based on older vehicles and older technologies, while others are simply exaggerated.
Modern engines, transmissions, oils, batteries, tires, and electronic systems have changed considerably. As a result, some traditional maintenance advice is no longer universally valid.

1. Engine Oil Must Be Changed Every 5,000 Kilometers
The idea that every vehicle must have its engine oil changed every 5,000 km is outdated.
Modern engines and engine oils can often operate safely for considerably longer intervals. Depending on the vehicle, manufacturer, engine, oil specification, driving conditions, and climate, the recommended interval may be 10,000 km, 15,000 km, or even longer.
