P0008 Engine Position System Performance Bank 1

P0008 is set when the engine control module (ECM) detects that the relationship between the crankshaft and the camshaft timing on Bank 1 is outside the expected range.

The wording “Engine Position System Performance” can sound vague, but the underlying issue is usually related to engine mechanical timing and the system that monitors or controls that timing.

The ECM determines engine position by comparing crankshaft and camshaft signals. These signals must maintain a very precise relationship. If the relationship changes beyond the manufacturer's allowed limits, the ECM can store P0008.

Compare the available commanded and actual camshaft positions.

Where supported, perform actuator tests and observe whether the camshaft responds correctly.

7. Check oil pressure

If VVT operation appears abnormal, verify that the engine has adequate oil pressure.

8. Inspect the mechanical timing

If the camshaft remains out of position or the evidence points toward mechanical timing, inspect the timing chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets, and alignment.

After the repair, clear the code and confirm that the camshaft/crankshaft relationship remains within specification during different engine speeds and loads.

Common Mistakes With P0008

Replacing camshaft sensors immediately

A sensor may be reporting a real mechanical timing deviation.

Replacing the timing chain without testing the VVT system

A sticking phaser or VVT solenoid can create timing deviations that do not require immediate replacement of the entire timing system.

Ignoring engine oil

VVT systems are highly dependent on correct oil flow and pressure.

Assuming the code identifies one failed component

P0008 identifies an engine-position performance problem. It does not identify the exact failed part.

Clearing the code without finding the cause

If the timing deviation remains, P0008 will normally return, and a mechanical problem may continue to worsen.

What Repairs May Be Required?

The appropriate repair depends on what testing reveals.
