P0237 Turbocharger / Supercharger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit Low Input

P0237 is set when the engine control module (ECM/PCM) detects that the electrical input from Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor “A” is lower than the expected value.

Do not assume that the first boost or MAP sensor you find is automatically Sensor “A.”

The electrical input is below the expected threshold.

P0238 – Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor “A” Circuit High Input

The electrical input is above the expected threshold.

This distinction can help narrow the diagnosis.

With P0237, particular attention should be paid to short-to-ground conditions, sensor ground, reference voltage, connector integrity and a sensor whose output has dropped too low.

What About P0239 and P0241?

These codes involve the other sensor designation:

P0239 – Boost Sensor “B” Circuit Malfunction

This is a broader circuit malfunction for Boost Sensor “B.”

P0241 – Boost Sensor “B” Circuit Low

This indicates a low electrical condition on the “B” circuit.

P0237 therefore belongs to the Sensor “A” / low-input group, while P0241 belongs to the Sensor “B” / low-input group.

The exact physical location of A and B still depends on the vehicle manufacturer.

Could P0237 Damage the Engine?

The code itself does not mean that engine damage is occurring.

However, an unresolved boost-control or pressure-sensing problem should not be ignored.

If the ECU receives incorrect pressure information, it may respond with protective strategies. Depending on the system and failure mode, boost control may become abnormal.

If the vehicle has severe power loss, unusual turbocharger noise, heavy smoke, overheating, oil-pressure warnings or other serious symptoms, continued driving should be avoided until the cause is identified.

There are three different possibilities that can produce very similar driving symptoms:

The sensor is wrong.

The turbocharger may be healthy, but the sensor is reporting incorrect pressure.

The sensor circuit is wrong.

The sensor may be perfectly functional, but its power, ground, signal wiring or connector is defective.

The actual boost pressure is wrong.

The electrical system may be functioning correctly, but the turbocharger, wastegate, actuator, vacuum system, intercooler or intake system has a mechanical problem.

P0237 does not tell you which of these three situations exists.

That is what the diagnostic process must determine.

When Is the Sensor Actually the Problem?

A boost sensor should be considered defective when testing demonstrates that:

  • Its supply/reference is correct

  • Its ground is correct

  • Its wiring is intact

  • Its connector has good electrical contact

  • The signal remains incorrect

  • The signal does not respond properly to pressure changes

  • The sensor fails manufacturer-specific testing

At that point, replacement of the sensor is justified.

If the signal wire is damaged, replacing the sensor will not solve the problem.

A Practical Repair Strategy

The most efficient approach is to follow the fault from the ECU toward the sensor rather than replacing expensive components based on assumptions:

P0237 → identify Boost Sensor “A” → check related codes → inspect connector → inspect harness → verify reference/supply → verify ground → test signal → compare sensor data with actual pressure → inspect boost system → test turbocharger control if necessary.

Only after those checks should major components be considered.
