P2293 Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Performance Problem

P2293 is set when the engine control module (ECM/PCM) determines that Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 is not controlling fuel pressure as expected.

The word “Performance” is the key to understanding this code. The ECM is not necessarily detecting a simple open circuit, short circuit, or completely missing electrical signal. Instead, it is comparing the fuel pressure it expects to see with the pressure the fuel system is actually producing and determining that the regulator's performance is outside the expected range.

Start with the complete scan

Check all stored and pending DTCs.

Look for related codes involving:

  • Fuel pressure

  • Fuel pressure sensors

  • Fuel pump operation

  • Injectors

  • Fuel mixture

  • Engine misfires

  • System voltage

If several fuel-pressure codes are present, they should be diagnosed together rather than treating P2293 as an isolated regulator failure.

Review freeze-frame data

Determine when the code was set.

Useful information may include:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine load

  • Coolant temperature

  • Vehicle speed

  • Throttle position

  • Commanded fuel pressure

  • Actual fuel pressure

  • System voltage

If P2293 occurs at high engine load, that can point toward a fuel-supply limitation that does not appear during idle.

Compare Commanded and Actual Pressure

If the scan tool provides fuel-pressure data, compare:

If the reported actual pressure looks implausible or does not respond appropriately, the pressure sensor and its circuit also deserve attention.

Inspect the Fuel Pressure Regulator

Once the electrical and pressure data point toward the regulator, inspect the component and its surroundings.

Look for:

  • Damaged housing

  • Fuel leakage

  • Contamination

  • Connector damage

  • Loose terminals

  • Corrosion

  • Wiring damage

  • Signs of previous repair

Driving with P2293 is not recommended for an extended period.

If the engine is running normally and the problem is mild, carefully moving the vehicle to a repair facility may be possible.

However, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine loads until the fuel-pressure problem is understood.

Stop driving if the vehicle develops:

  • Severe hesitation

P2293 – Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Performance Problem

The ECM detects that Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 is not producing the expected fuel-pressure behavior.

P2294 – Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Control Circuit/Open

This points more directly toward an electrical control-circuit or open-circuit condition involving the regulator.

In other words, P2293 is primarily about how the fuel-pressure system performs, while P2294 points more specifically toward the electrical control circuit.

A vehicle can potentially have both types of faults.

The Best Way to Approach P2293

P2293 should be treated as a fuel-pressure control diagnosis, not simply a component replacement code.

The most useful question is:

Is the actual fuel pressure following the pressure commanded by the ECM?

If it is not, the diagnosis then moves through the entire control system:

fuel supply → pump → regulator → pressure sensor → wiring → control strategy.

Once the cause has been identified, the repair is usually straightforward. The challenge is correctly determining whether the regulator is actually responsible or whether another part of the fuel system is preventing it from achieving the required pressure.
