P0270 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low

P0270 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally low electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 4.

The key word here is “Low.” It refers to the electrical behavior of the injector circuit, not necessarily low fuel pressure, low fuel quantity, low engine power, or low engine speed.

P0270 is therefore primarily an injector circuit electrical fault code. The injector itself may be defective, but the wiring, connector, power supply, control circuit, or ECM driver can also be responsible.

What Does P0270 Mean?

The ECM controls the cylinder 4 injector by precisely switching its electrical circuit.

When the ECM sees a voltage, current, or circuit response that is lower than the expected value, it can store P0270.

The exact electrical behavior depends on the injection system. Some engines use a common injector power supply with the ECM controlling the ground side, while others use high-side drivers or more sophisticated current-controlled systems.

For this reason, the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test specifications are essential.

P0270 should be interpreted as:

“The electrical condition of the cylinder 4 injector circuit is lower than expected.”

It should not immediately be interpreted as:

“The cylinder 4 injector is bad.”

What Can Cause P0270?

Several different faults can produce this code:

  • Faulty cylinder 4 fuel injector

  • Short to ground in the injector control circuit

  • Damaged injector control wire

  • Open or high-resistance circuit

  • Corroded injector connector

  • Loose injector terminal

  • Poor terminal contact

  • Damaged injector power supply

  • Low voltage in a shared injector power circuit

  • Wiring damaged by heat or vibration

  • Internal electrical failure of the injector

  • Poor engine or ECM ground

  • ECM injector driver fault

The exact cause can only be determined by testing the circuit.

“Low” Does Not Mean Low Fuel Pressure

This distinction is especially important.

P0270 is an electrical code.

The word “Low” describes the electrical signal or circuit condition detected by the ECM.

It does not directly tell you that:

  • Fuel pressure is low

  • The injector is delivering too little fuel

  • Engine RPM is low

  • Compression is low

  • Battery voltage is necessarily low

A low-fuel-pressure problem can certainly cause poor cylinder performance, but it is a different diagnostic issue unless the electrical injector circuit is also affected.

The Injector Is Not Always the Problem

Suppose the cylinder 4 injector is mechanically healthy but its control wire has developed a short to ground.

Depending on the injector control architecture, this can cause the ECM to detect an abnormally low electrical condition and set P0270.

Likewise, a damaged connector or poor terminal can alter the circuit behavior enough to trigger the code.

This is why replacing the injector without testing the circuit can result in an unnecessary repair.

Start With the Complete Diagnostic Picture

Before focusing on cylinder 4, scan the vehicle for all stored and pending DTCs.

This is particularly important if other injector circuit codes are present.

For example, several injector codes appearing simultaneously can suggest a common problem involving:

  • Injector power supply

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Engine harness

  • ECM power or ground

  • Shared electrical circuit

If P0270 is isolated to cylinder 4, then a cylinder-specific problem becomes more likely.

Inspect the Cylinder 4 Injector Connector

The connector is one of the first places to inspect.

Look for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Terminals pushed back inside the connector

  • Broken connector locking mechanism

  • Oil contamination

  • Water contamination

  • Damaged wires near the connector

A connector can appear visually perfect while still having insufficient terminal tension.

The wiring diagram should identify:

  • Injector power supply

  • Injector control wire

  • ECM connector and pin

  • Shared circuits

  • Fuse or relay

  • Ground paths

  • High-side or low-side control strategy

Once the circuit architecture is known, the technician can determine where the abnormal low condition is occurring.

This avoids making assumptions based solely on the appearance of the injector connector.

Check Injector Power Supply

If the injector receives power through a shared supply, verify that the cylinder 4 injector has the correct voltage under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.

If several injectors share the same supply and several circuit codes appear simultaneously, inspect the common supply before replacing individual injectors.

A voltage-drop test can also reveal excessive resistance in the power or ground path.

A circuit may show acceptable voltage with almost no electrical load but fail when the injector is actually being operated.

Check for a Short to Ground

A short to ground is an important possibility with a circuit-low code.

A damaged wire does not always create a completely open circuit.

The conductor may be partially broken or corroded, creating excessive resistance.

A simple continuity test may show that the wire is technically connected, even though it cannot reliably carry the required current.

Depending on the system, loaded-circuit testing and voltage-drop measurements can reveal this type of problem more effectively.

Test the Injector Electrically

The injector itself should also be tested.

Depending on the injector type, resistance testing can reveal an obvious:

  • Open coil

  • Shorted coil

  • Significant deviation from specification

But a resistance measurement should not be treated as a complete injector diagnosis.

An injector can have electrically normal resistance and still have a mechanical problem such as:

  • Restricted flow

  • Sticking

  • Contamination

  • Poor spray pattern

  • Incorrect fuel delivery

Electrical health and mechanical fuel-delivery performance are separate things.

Oscilloscope Testing Can Help

When P0270 is intermittent or difficult to reproduce, oscilloscope testing can be extremely useful.

The cylinder 4 injector waveform can be compared with the waveform from a known-good cylinder.

Depending on the system, the waveform can reveal abnormalities in:

  • Control voltage

  • Switching behavior

  • Current rise

  • Injector opening event

  • Driver operation

  • Inductive voltage behavior

  • Circuit interruptions

  • Electrical noise

This can help determine whether the problem is actually coming from the injector, wiring, or ECM driver.

Can P0270 Cause a Misfire?

Yes.

If the cylinder 4 injector is not being controlled correctly, the cylinder may receive insufficient or no fuel.

This can result in:

  • Rough idle

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Loss of power

  • Engine vibration

  • Difficult starting

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Cylinder 4 misfire

A separate P0304 – Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected code may therefore appear alongside P0270.

If both codes are present, the cylinder 4 injector circuit becomes an important area of investigation.

However, P0304 should not be ignored simply because P0270 is present. The misfire should still be confirmed and its severity evaluated.

P0270 That Appears Only Under Load

An intermittent P0270 during acceleration can provide an important diagnostic clue.

When the engine is under load, several things change:

  • Engine movement increases

  • Harness vibration increases

  • Injector operating demand changes

  • Electrical current demand can change

  • Engine temperature may be higher

A damaged wire or weak terminal can therefore work normally at idle but fail under load.

In such cases, testing the vehicle under the conditions in which the code occurs is often more valuable than simply checking the circuit while the engine is stationary.

Gasoline vs Diesel Injector Systems

The correct test procedure depends on the type of engine.

A conventional gasoline port injector does not operate electrically in the same way as a modern common-rail diesel injector.

Diesel injectors can use specialized driver circuits and different electrical characteristics.

Consequently, there is no universal injector resistance or voltage value that can be applied to every vehicle.

Always use the specifications for the specific engine and injection system.

Multiple Injector Codes Need a Different Approach

If P0270 appears together with other injector circuit codes, don't automatically assume that several injectors failed simultaneously.

A common electrical problem can affect multiple injectors.

Check:

  • Common injector power

  • Fuse

  • Relay

  • Harness

  • Engine grounds

  • ECM power supply

  • Shared connectors

This can save considerable diagnostic time.

What About the ECM?

The ECM controls the injector circuit, so an internal ECM driver failure is technically possible.

However, it should generally be considered after the injector and external wiring have been proven good.

Before condemning the ECM, verify:

  • Injector condition

  • Connector condition

  • Power supply

  • Control circuit

  • Continuity

  • Shorts

  • Voltage drop

  • ECM command

Replacing an ECM simply because P0270 remains stored can be an expensive and unnecessary repair.

P0270 vs P0271 and P0272

These three codes are closely related to cylinder 4 but describe different conditions.

P0270 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low

The ECM detects an abnormally low electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

P0271 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High

The ECM detects an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

P0272 – Cylinder 4 Contribution / Balance Fault

The ECM determines that cylinder 4 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.

The distinction between P0270 and P0272 is particularly important.

P0270 points toward an electrical injector-circuit problem.

P0272 points toward a cylinder performance problem and can be caused by fuel delivery, ignition, compression, valve-train, timing, or other mechanical problems.

A Practical Diagnostic Order for P0270

A sensible diagnostic sequence is:

  1. Scan all stored and pending DTCs.

  2. Check freeze-frame information.

  3. Confirm the physical location of cylinder 4 using manufacturer service information.

  4. Inspect the cylinder 4 injector connector.

  5. Inspect the complete injector harness.

  6. Check injector power supply.

  7. Identify the control circuit using the wiring diagram.

  8. Test for unwanted shorts to ground or other circuits.

  9. Check for opens and excessive resistance.

  10. Perform voltage-drop testing where appropriate.

  11. Test the injector's electrical characteristics.

  12. Compare the injector control waveform with a known-good cylinder if necessary.

  13. Perform injector flow or balance testing if the electrical circuit is good but fuel delivery remains suspect.

  14. Test the ECM driver only after the external circuit has been verified.

  15. Clear the code and perform a road test under the conditions that originally triggered P0270.

Final Diagnosis

P0270 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low means the ECM has detected an abnormally low electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

The code does not automatically mean that the injector is defective, and “Low” does not mean low fuel pressure.

The actual cause can be a faulty injector, shorted control wire, damaged harness, poor connector contact, open circuit, voltage-drop problem, shared power-supply fault, or, less commonly, an ECM injector-driver failure.
