P0276 Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Low
P0276 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally low electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder #6.
The most important word in this code is “Low.” It refers to the electrical condition of the injector circuit, not necessarily to low fuel pressure or low fuel delivery.
P0276 therefore does not automatically mean that the cylinder #6 injector is clogged or defective. The injector itself, wiring, connector, power supply, control circuit or ECM injector driver can all potentially cause this code.
What Does P0276 Mean?
Fuel injectors are electronically controlled components. The ECM determines when an injector should open and controls its electrical circuit to deliver the required amount of fuel.
When the ECM detects that the electrical behavior of the cylinder #6 injector circuit is lower than the expected range, it can store P0276 – Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Low.
The exact circuit design varies between gasoline and diesel engines and between manufacturers. Some systems use a shared injector power supply, while the ECM controls the individual injector through a separate circuit.
Because of these differences, the vehicle-specific wiring diagram and manufacturer's test specifications are important when diagnosing P0276.
What Does “Circuit Low” Actually Mean?
“Circuit Low” is an electrical term.
It does not necessarily mean:

Low fuel pressure

Low fuel volume
-
Low injector flow
-
A lean fuel mixture
-
A clogged fuel filter

A physically closed injector
-
Insufficient fuel in the tank
For example, an injector control wire shorted to ground can create a low electrical condition even though the fuel system has completely normal pressure.
Likewise, an internal electrical fault inside the injector can cause P0276 without there being a problem with the fuel pump.
Where Is Cylinder #6?
The location of cylinder #6 is engine-specific.
There is no universal cylinder layout that applies to every vehicle.
This is especially important on V6, V8, V10 and V12 engines. Cylinder numbering and bank arrangement vary between manufacturers.
Before testing the injector, spark plug or compression of cylinder #6, confirm its physical location using the manufacturer's service information.
Common Causes of P0276
Faulty cylinder #6 fuel injector
The injector itself can develop an internal electrical fault.

Injector power supply problem
On some engines, multiple injectors share a common power supply.
A blown fuse, faulty relay, damaged power wire or poor connection can therefore affect injector operation.
If several injector circuit codes appear at the same time, the shared power supply should be investigated before replacing individual injectors.
Short to ground
A control wire that contacts the engine, chassis or another grounded component can pull the electrical circuit lower than expected.
This is one possible explanation for the “Low” condition detected by the ECM.
ECM injector driver problem
The ECM contains electronic drivers that control individual injectors.
A damaged driver can produce an abnormal electrical signal.
However, the ECM should generally be considered only after the injector, wiring, connectors, power supply and grounds have been properly tested.

The symptoms depend on how severely cylinder #6 injector operation is affected.

If the injector stops operating completely, cylinder #6 may effectively stop contributing normally to engine power.
Can P0276 Cause a Misfire?
Yes.
If the cylinder #6 injector cannot deliver the correct amount of fuel, combustion can become weak or disappear completely.
The ECM may then detect a cylinder #6 misfire in addition to P0276.
For example, an electrical problem in the injector circuit could prevent the injector from opening. The resulting lack of fuel could cause a misfire and rough engine operation.
However, a misfire does not prove that the injector itself is defective. The electrical circuit still needs to be tested.
P0276 Is Not the Same as Low Fuel Pressure
The word “Low” can easily cause confusion.
P0276 does not mean that the fuel rail pressure is low.
A vehicle can have normal fuel pressure and still set P0276 because the electrical circuit controlling cylinder #6's injector is abnormal.
Conversely, low fuel pressure can cause poor engine performance without necessarily producing P0276.
Fuel pressure should therefore be tested separately when the symptoms or other diagnostic information indicate a possible fuel-supply problem.
How to Diagnose P0276
A systematic electrical diagnosis is much more effective than immediately replacing the injector.
1. Scan for all DTCs
First, perform a complete scan and record all stored and pending codes.
Look for additional faults involving:

Freeze-frame information can also show the engine speed, load and temperature when P0276 occurred.
2. Inspect the cylinder #6 injector connector
Disconnect and inspect the connector according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Look for corrosion, damaged terminals, poor terminal tension, contamination and physical damage.
Do not overlook the connector simply because it appears clean from the outside.
3. Inspect the wiring
Follow the injector wiring back through the harness.
Look for:

A wiring problem can sometimes be found by carefully checking the harness while monitoring the circuit.
4. Verify injector power supply
Determine how the vehicle supplies power to the injector.
Compare the cylinder #6 injector circuit with another known-good injector where appropriate.
If the common power supply is missing, the problem may be upstream of the individual injector.
5. Test the control circuit
The injector control circuit should be tested according to the vehicle's wiring diagram.

A simple continuity test does not always prove that a circuit is healthy. A wire can have continuity but still have excessive resistance or fail under vibration.

On some vehicles, swapping the cylinder #6 injector with another cylinder can be a useful diagnostic method.
If the fault moves with the injector, the injector becomes much more suspicious.
If the fault remains with cylinder #6, the wiring or control circuit becomes more likely.
Modern diesel injectors may require coding or calibration after replacement.
7. Check fuel pressure if necessary
If the electrical circuit is functioning correctly, fuel pressure and fuel delivery should be checked.
The relevant pressure should be compared with manufacturer specifications under the conditions where the fault occurs.
A fuel system can sometimes maintain acceptable pressure at idle but fail under heavy engine load.
8. Check cylinder performance
If the injector and electrical circuit are operating correctly but the engine still has a cylinder-specific problem, investigate the mechanical condition of cylinder #6.

This is especially important if P0276 is accompanied by a cylinder contribution/balance code.
P0276 and P0278 Can Appear Together
P0276 and P0278 – Cylinder 6 Contribution / Balance Fault can be related.
P0276 concerns the electrical injector circuit.
P0278 concerns the performance or contribution of cylinder #6.
For example, an electrical injector fault could cause incorrect fueling, which then causes cylinder #6 to produce less power than the ECM expects. In that situation, both codes may be stored.
The two codes should therefore be diagnosed together rather than treated as two completely unrelated faults.
P0276 vs P0275 and P0277
The surrounding codes help illustrate the difference between circuit and performance faults.
P0275 – Cylinder 6 Contribution / Balance Fault
Indicates that cylinder #6 is not contributing to engine operation as expected.
P0276 – Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Low
Indicates a low electrical condition in the cylinder #6 injector circuit.
P0277 – Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit High
Indicates a high electrical condition in the cylinder #6 injector circuit.
P0276 and P0277 are primarily electrical injector circuit faults, while P0275 concerns cylinder contribution/balance.
P0276 vs P0279
These codes are similar but affect different cylinders.
P0276 refers to the cylinder #6 injector circuit.
P0279 refers to the cylinder #7 injector circuit.
Both are “Circuit Low” codes, but they identify different injector circuits.
If P0276 and P0279 appear together, it is worth checking whether the affected injectors share a common power supply, ground or wiring section rather than assuming that two separate injectors failed simultaneously.
Is P0276 Serious?
P0276 should be diagnosed promptly, particularly if the engine is running poorly.
If the injector circuit is only intermittently affected and the engine is otherwise operating normally, a short drive to a repair facility may be possible.
However, avoid continued driving if there is:

A severe misfire on a gasoline engine can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system and overheat the catalytic converter.
On diesel engines, a serious injector or combustion problem can increase smoke, emissions and engine stress.
Do Not Replace the Injector Without Testing the Circuit
P0276 is often treated as an injector problem, but the code itself does not say “injector failed.”
The ECM is reporting that the electrical condition of the cylinder #6 injector circuit is lower than expected.
The correct diagnostic path is to check the injector, connector, wiring, power supply and control circuit before condemning the ECM.
If the electrical system passes its tests, then fuel delivery and the mechanical condition of the cylinder should be considered.
This approach prevents unnecessary injector and ECU replacement and makes it much easier to identify the actual cause of P0276 – Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Low.
