P0285 Cylinder 9 Injector Circuit Low

P0285 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally low electrical condition in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder #9.

The word “Low” refers to the electrical condition of the injector circuit. It does not directly mean low fuel pressure, low fuel flow, a lean mixture, or a clogged injector.

The injector itself can be the cause, but P0285 can also result from a damaged wire, poor connector, short to ground, power-supply problem, or an issue with the ECU's injector control circuit.

Freeze-frame data can show the conditions under which the ECU detected the fault.

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine load

  • Engine temperature

  • Battery voltage

  • Fuel pressure

  • Vehicle speed

3. Inspect the cylinder #9 injector connector

The distinction is electrical: P0285 indicates a low circuit condition, while P0286 indicates a high circuit condition.

Neither code by itself proves that the injector is defective.

P0285 vs. P0287

These two codes can appear together.

P0285 concerns the electrical condition of the cylinder #9 injector circuit.

P0287 concerns the contribution or balance of cylinder #9.

For example, a faulty injector circuit can cause the injector to operate incorrectly, which can then cause cylinder #9 to produce less power and trigger P0287.

What Should Be Replaced for P0285?

There is no automatic replacement part for P0285.

Can You Drive With P0285?

Driving with P0285 is not recommended for longer periods, particularly if the engine is running poorly.

A short trip to a repair facility may be possible if the engine runs normally and the Check Engine Light is steady.

  • Severe engine shaking

  • Significant power loss

  • Flashing Check Engine Light

If the injector is electrically defective, replace it.

If the wiring or connector is damaged, repair the circuit.

If both are confirmed good, investigate ECU control.

The key is to distinguish an actual injector failure from a circuit problem that is preventing a good injector from operating correctly.
