P0272 Cylinder 4 Contribution / Balance Fault

P0272 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has determined that cylinder 4 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.

This is an important distinction: P0272 does not directly mean that the cylinder 4 injector is faulty.

The ECM is essentially seeing an imbalance in the engine's cylinder contribution. The reason could be related to fuel delivery, ignition, compression, valve operation, air supply, or even the mechanical condition of the engine.

What Does “Contribution / Balance” Mean?

While the engine is running, each cylinder should contribute a relatively consistent amount of torque to the crankshaft.

The ECM can estimate this contribution by monitoring changes in crankshaft speed through the crankshaft position sensor.

When cylinder 4 produces less power than expected, the crankshaft acceleration associated with that combustion event can be smaller than normal.

If the difference becomes large enough or occurs under the conditions defined by the manufacturer's calibration, the ECM can store P0272.

Therefore, the code is best understood as:

“Cylinder 4 is not contributing normally.”

It is not a direct diagnosis of the component responsible for the problem.

What Can Cause P0272?

A weak cylinder can have many different causes.

Common possibilities include:

  • Faulty or restricted fuel injector

  • Incorrect injector fuel delivery

  • Injector wiring or connector problem

  • Low fuel pressure

  • Poor fuel supply

  • Faulty spark plug on a gasoline engine

  • Weak ignition coil

  • Ignition wiring problem

  • Low compression

  • Burned or leaking valve

  • Damaged valve seat

  • Worn piston rings

  • Damaged piston

  • Head gasket problem

  • Valve-train fault

  • Camshaft or timing problem

  • Variable valve timing problem

  • Intake leak affecting the cylinder

  • Carbon deposits

  • Incorrect air/fuel mixture

  • Mechanical engine damage

  • ECM control problem

The correct diagnosis depends heavily on what other symptoms and DTCs are present.

P0272 Does Not Automatically Mean “Bad Injector”

The wording of this code can sometimes lead to an incorrect repair.

Because the code is in the P02xx family and refers to cylinder contribution, it is tempting to remove cylinder 4's injector immediately.

That is not a reliable diagnostic strategy.

For example, suppose cylinder 4 has very low compression because of a leaking exhaust valve. The injector may be operating perfectly, but the cylinder still cannot produce normal power.

The ECM can detect the resulting contribution imbalance and set P0272.

The same principle applies to an ignition problem on a gasoline engine. If the spark plug or ignition coil cannot ignite the mixture properly, cylinder 4 will contribute less power even though the injector is completely healthy.

Start by Looking at the Other Fault Codes

Before testing individual components, scan the vehicle for all stored and pending DTCs.

P0272 accompanied by a misfire code such as P0304 – Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected provides a much stronger indication that cylinder 4 is experiencing a combustion problem.

Other codes can also change the diagnostic direction.

For example:

  • Injector circuit codes → investigate injector electrical control

  • Ignition coil codes → investigate the ignition system

  • Fuel-pressure codes → investigate fuel delivery

  • Cam/crank correlation codes → investigate timing and synchronization

  • Multiple-cylinder contribution or misfire codes → investigate common fuel, air, ignition, or mechanical causes

The combination of codes is often more informative than P0272 by itself.

Check the Engine Under the Conditions When the Code Appears

Freeze-frame data can be extremely useful.

Look at:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine load

  • Coolant temperature

  • Fuel trims

  • Vehicle speed

  • Throttle position

  • Intake pressure or airflow

  • Fuel pressure where available

If the problem appears primarily during acceleration or heavy load, the diagnostic direction may be different from a problem that occurs only at idle.

A cylinder that contributes normally at idle but becomes weak under load can point toward an ignition system that breaks down under cylinder pressure, inadequate fuel delivery, or a mechanical problem that becomes more apparent under load.

Check Cylinder 4's Fuel Delivery

On engines using conventional fuel injectors, the injector should be checked both electrically and mechanically.

Inspect the injector connector and wiring first.

Look for:

  • Loose terminals

  • Corrosion

  • Damaged wiring

  • Broken wires

  • Oil or water contamination

  • Poor terminal tension

  • Harness damage near the engine

Then verify that the ECM is actually commanding the injector correctly.

Depending on the vehicle, injector testing can include electrical testing, waveform analysis, injector balance testing, flow testing, or other manufacturer-specific procedures.

Injector resistance alone is not enough to prove an injector is good.

An injector can have normal electrical resistance while still being partially restricted or delivering an incorrect amount of fuel.

An Injector Swap Can Be Useful

If the engine design allows it, swapping the cylinder 4 injector with another compatible cylinder can be a useful diagnostic test.

If the contribution problem moves to the other cylinder after the swap, the injector becomes a strong suspect.

However, this test should be performed carefully because injector coding, calibration, physical differences, or installation requirements may make swapping inappropriate on some modern engines.

On systems where injectors require individual coding or calibration, follow the manufacturer's procedure.

Check the Ignition System on Gasoline Engines

For gasoline engines, ignition should be investigated early.

A worn spark plug or weak ignition coil can cause a cylinder to produce significantly less power.

A particularly useful diagnostic method is to swap the cylinder 4 ignition coil with another cylinder when the ignition system permits it.

If the problem moves with the coil, the coil is strongly implicated.

The spark plug should also be inspected for signs such as:

  • Excessive wear

  • Incorrect gap

  • Heavy carbon deposits

  • Fuel wetting

  • Oil contamination

  • Abnormal deposits

The appearance of the plug can provide clues about what is happening inside the cylinder.

Why Ignition Problems Can Be Load-Dependent

A coil that works normally at idle is not necessarily healthy.

As engine load increases, cylinder pressure rises. The ignition system may require a higher voltage to produce a reliable spark across the plug gap.

A weak coil or damaged insulation may therefore work perfectly during gentle driving but fail during hard acceleration.

This is why a simple idle test can sometimes miss the problem.

Check Compression Before Blaming the ECM

If fuel and ignition checks do not explain the contribution problem, compression testing becomes very important.

Compare cylinder 4 with the other cylinders rather than relying only on an absolute number.

A significantly lower compression reading on cylinder 4 can point toward an internal mechanical problem.

Possible causes include:

  • Burned valve

  • Bent valve

  • Valve-seat problem

  • Worn piston rings

  • Damaged piston

  • Cylinder-wall wear

  • Head-gasket leakage

The manufacturer's compression specifications and testing procedure should be followed.

Leak-Down Testing Can Locate the Problem

If cylinder 4 has low compression, a leak-down test can help determine where the pressure is escaping.

If air can be heard escaping through the intake, an intake-valve sealing problem may be involved.

If air escapes through the exhaust, an exhaust-valve problem becomes more likely.

If significant air enters the crankcase, piston rings or piston damage may be involved.

Bubbles or pressure entering the cooling system can indicate a possible head-gasket or cylinder-head problem.

This is far more useful than replacing the injector simply because P0272 is present.

Valve-Train and Timing Problems

A cylinder can also lose contribution because its valves are not operating correctly.

Possible causes include:

  • Worn camshaft lobe

  • Damaged rocker arm

  • Hydraulic lifter problem

  • Valve clearance issue

  • Sticking valve

  • Broken valve spring

  • Variable valve timing problem

  • Incorrect camshaft timing

Timing should not automatically be blamed when P0272 appears on one cylinder.

If only cylinder 4 is affected, a cylinder-specific problem is generally more interesting initially.

If several cylinders show contribution or misfire problems, or cam/crank synchronization codes are also present, then overall valve timing and VVT become more important.

Intake Leaks Can Affect One Cylinder

An intake leak near the runner supplying cylinder 4 can create a cylinder-specific mixture problem.

This can be particularly noticeable at idle.

A smoke test can help locate external intake leaks.

Fuel-trim data can also provide useful clues, although fuel trims must be interpreted together with engine operating conditions and the vehicle's fuel-system strategy.

Do not assume that a lean fuel trim automatically proves an intake leak.

What If P0272 Appears on a Diesel?

The diagnostic approach changes somewhat on a diesel engine.

Instead of relying on spark plugs and conventional ignition coils, the technician needs to consider:

  • Injector fuel delivery

  • Injector correction values

  • Injector return/leak-off

  • Rail pressure

  • High-pressure fuel system

  • Injector wiring

  • Compression

  • Valve-train condition

  • EGR operation

  • Turbocharger/air supply

  • Engine timing

A diesel injector may have acceptable electrical characteristics while still having an incorrect spray pattern or fuel delivery problem.

Where supported, injector correction values and cylinder cut-out/balance tests can be particularly useful.

How Serious Is P0272?

The seriousness depends on how much cylinder 4 is actually underperforming.

A small contribution imbalance may produce little noticeable drivability change.

A severe imbalance can cause:

  • Rough running

  • Engine vibration

  • Poor acceleration

  • Loss of power

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Difficult starting

  • Increased emissions

  • Misfire-related damage

If the check engine light is flashing and the engine is running with a severe misfire, continued driving should be minimized because unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter on gasoline engines.

P0272 vs P0271 and P0273

These codes are related but describe different conditions.

P0271 – Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit High

This points specifically toward an abnormally high electrical condition in the cylinder 4 injector circuit.

P0272 – Cylinder 4 Contribution / Balance Fault

This indicates that cylinder 4 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared with the other cylinders.

P0273 – Cylinder 5 Injector Circuit High

This moves the electrical injector-circuit diagnosis to cylinder 5.

The key distinction is that P0272 is a cylinder performance/contribution diagnosis, not an injector circuit diagnosis.

A Practical Diagnostic Strategy

A sensible approach to P0272 is:

  1. Scan all stored and pending DTCs.

  2. Examine freeze-frame information.

  3. Confirm the physical location of cylinder 4 using manufacturer service information.

  4. Check misfire and cylinder contribution data if the scan tool supports it.

  5. Inspect the cylinder 4 injector and wiring.

  6. Verify injector operation and fuel delivery.

  7. On gasoline engines, inspect and test the spark plug and ignition coil.

  8. Compare cylinder 4 with another cylinder where appropriate.

  9. Check fuel pressure and delivery if the evidence points toward a fuel-supply problem.

  10. Perform a compression test if fuel and ignition systems appear normal.

  11. Perform a leak-down test if compression is abnormal.

  12. Investigate valve-train, cam timing, and VVT if mechanical evidence supports it.

  13. Check ECM control only after the external systems have been proven good.

Final Diagnosis

P0272 – Cylinder 4 Contribution / Balance Fault means the ECM has determined that cylinder 4 is producing less contribution than expected compared with the other cylinders.

It does not tell you exactly why.

The injector is one possible cause, but so are ignition problems, fuel-pressure issues, intake problems, low compression, valve leakage, valve-train faults, timing problems, and other mechanical conditions.

The most effective diagnosis is therefore to determine why cylinder 4 is weak rather than treating the code as an automatic injector-replacement command.

If the injector and ignition systems check out, compression and leak-down testing can quickly separate a fueling problem from an internal engine problem. This approach prevents unnecessary parts replacement and gets to the actual cause of the contribution imbalance.
