What Are STEP LPG Tanks?

STEP LPG tanks are pressure-rated fuel tanks used to store liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in vehicles equipped with an LPG conversion system. The tank is one of the most important components of an LPG installation because it stores the fuel under pressure and must remain secure under different driving and temperature conditions.

Choosing an LPG tank is not simply a matter of selecting the largest possible capacity. The tank must be compatible with the vehicle, installation location, mounting system, multivalve, and applicable safety requirements.

What Is a STEP LPG Tank?

A STEP LPG tank is a pressure vessel designed to store LPG in liquid form.

Inside the tank, LPG is stored under pressure. When the engine requires LPG, fuel is taken from the tank and delivered through the LPG system to the engine after passing through the appropriate components, such as the multivalve, fuel line, regulator, and injectors.

The tank itself is therefore more than just a storage container. Its construction, pressure resistance, mounting system, connections, and compatibility with the multivalve are all important for safe operation.

How Is an LPG Tank Constructed?

Automotive LPG tanks are manufactured to withstand the pressure generated by LPG and changes in pressure caused by temperature variations.

The tank body is generally made from suitable steel and is manufactured according to pressure-vessel requirements. The quality of the material, welding, tank geometry, and manufacturing process all affect its strength and durability.

A dedicated connection area is provided for the installation of the multivalve.

Cylindrical LPG tanks

Cylindrical tanks are commonly installed horizontally in the trunk or another suitable part of the vehicle.

Their main advantage is that they can be available in various capacities. However, they can occupy a significant amount of trunk space.

Toroidal LPG tanks

Toroidal tanks, often called donut or spare-wheel-well tanks, have a circular shape and are designed to fit into the spare-wheel compartment of suitable vehicles.

This type of tank can preserve much of the usable trunk space because it is positioned underneath the trunk floor.

However, tank selection should not be based on diameter alone. The height of the tank, spare-wheel-well dimensions, multivalve arrangement, and available clearance must also be considered.

How Should LPG Tank Capacity Be Selected?

Tank capacity should be selected according to the vehicle and its intended use.

A small vehicle used primarily for short urban trips may not benefit from an unnecessarily large tank. A larger tank can take up more space and increase vehicle weight.

On the other hand, a vehicle frequently used for long-distance driving may benefit from a larger LPG capacity because fewer refueling stops may be required.

Tank selection should therefore consider:

  • Vehicle model

  • Engine characteristics

  • Available installation space

  • Spare-wheel-well dimensions

  • Desired driving range

  • Trunk-space requirements

  • Tank dimensions

  • Applicable installation requirements

The largest possible tank is not automatically the best choice.

How Is a STEP LPG Tank Installed?

LPG tank installation should be carried out by a qualified installer using the appropriate mounting equipment and procedures.

The tank must be securely fixed so that it cannot move excessively during acceleration, braking, cornering, or an accident.

The LPG lines must also be routed correctly. They should be protected from excessive heat, mechanical damage, abrasion, and road debris.

The tank should not be installed in a position where it can easily contact the exhaust system or other high-temperature components.

The multivalve and all fuel connections must be installed correctly, followed by an appropriate leak inspection.

What Should Be Considered When Installing an LPG Tank in the Trunk?

A cylindrical LPG tank installed inside the trunk can significantly reduce available cargo space.

The mounting points must be strong enough to keep the tank securely in place. The tank should also be positioned so that luggage and other objects cannot damage the tank, multivalve, or LPG connections.

With a toroidal tank, the dimensions of the spare-wheel well must be checked carefully before installation.

The tank must sit securely and leave sufficient clearance for the multivalve, connections, protective components, and trunk-floor arrangement.

LPG Tank Safety

Because an LPG tank is a pressure vessel, safety should always be the priority.

The tank should never be drilled, cut, welded, modified, or repaired with unauthorized methods.

A damaged tank should not be considered safe simply because the damage appears minor from the outside.

Following a collision or significant impact, the tank and its mounting system should be professionally inspected. Damage may not always be immediately obvious.

An LPG smell is also not normal. If a persistent LPG odor is detected, the vehicle should be inspected for leaks by a qualified technician rather than continuing to operate it normally.

How Much LPG Can a STEP Tank Hold?

The nominal tank capacity and the amount of LPG added during a normal refueling are not necessarily the same.

For example, a tank with a nominal capacity of 60 liters is not normally filled with 60 liters of liquid LPG. The filling system is designed to maintain an expansion space for safety.

The actual amount added during refueling can vary depending on the tank, multivalve, remaining fuel, temperature, and filling system.

For this reason, a difference between the nominal tank capacity and the quantity shown on a fuel receipt does not automatically indicate a problem.

Do STEP LPG Tanks Have a Service Life?

There is no single worldwide service-life period that applies to every LPG tank.

Requirements can vary depending on the country, vehicle regulations, tank approval, manufacturing information, certification, and applicable technical standards.

The information stamped or marked on the tank should therefore be checked, and the requirements applicable in the country where the vehicle is registered should be followed.

A universal statement such as “every LPG tank must be replaced after exactly X years” is not appropriate without considering the relevant regulations and tank approval.

When Should an LPG Tank Be Replaced?

Replacement may become necessary when the tank has suffered damage or no longer meets the applicable safety requirements.

Particular attention should be paid after:

  • A serious accident

  • Significant impact or deformation

  • Severe corrosion

  • Damage around mounting points

  • Suspected LPG leakage

  • Missing or unreadable identification and approval markings

  • Installation damage

  • Regulatory or certification problems

A tank that is determined to be unsafe should generally be replaced with a suitable approved tank rather than being modified or repaired improperly.

What Should You Check When Buying a STEP LPG Tank?

When selecting a STEP LPG tank, the brand and price should not be the only considerations.

The first question is whether the tank physically fits the vehicle and can be installed securely.

Then the following factors should be considered:

Tank type: Cylindrical and toroidal tanks have different installation requirements.

Capacity: The capacity should provide an appropriate balance between driving range, weight, and available space.

Dimensions: Diameter and height are both important, especially for toroidal tanks.

Multivalve compatibility: The tank and multivalve must be compatible with the intended LPG installation.

Approval and certification: The tank should meet the applicable technical and regulatory requirements.

Mounting: The installation must provide secure fixation and adequate protection.

STEP LPG Tank Maintenance and Inspection

The LPG tank should be inspected as part of the vehicle's overall LPG system.

Inspection should not be limited to the tank itself. The multivalve, LPG lines, filling connection, mounting brackets, and other connections should also be checked.

The outside of the tank should be examined for corrosion, deformation, impact damage, or other abnormalities.

If any damage is found, it should not simply be covered with paint or ignored. The condition of the tank should be assessed by a qualified professional.

STEP LPG Tanks and LPG System Compatibility

The tank is only one part of the complete LPG conversion system.

A properly functioning LPG installation also depends on the regulator, injectors, ECU, fuel lines, multivalve, electrical connections, calibration, and the condition of the vehicle's original engine and fuel system.

Installing a high-capacity tank does not automatically increase the performance of the LPG system.

Likewise, choosing a quality tank cannot compensate for incorrect LPG calibration, an undersized regulator, insufficient injector capacity, poor electrical connections, or an improperly installed fuel line.

Why Correct Installation Matters

An LPG tank can only provide the expected level of safety when it is installed correctly.

The tank must be appropriate for the vehicle, securely mounted, connected to a compatible multivalve, and positioned away from excessive heat and potential mechanical damage.

The installation should also comply with the applicable vehicle and LPG-system regulations.

For this reason, the quality of the installation is just as important as the quality of the tank itself.

Choosing a STEP LPG Tank

When choosing a STEP LPG tank, the best option is not necessarily the cheapest tank or the one with the greatest capacity.

A suitable tank should have the correct dimensions, adequate capacity, appropriate approval, compatible components, and a secure mounting arrangement.

The condition of the entire LPG system should also be considered.

A safe LPG installation depends on the complete system working together correctly. The tank, multivalve, fuel lines, regulator, injectors, electronics, and calibration all have to be suitable for the vehicle.

For this reason, correct tank selection, professional installation, secure mounting, and regular inspection are the key factors in achieving a reliable and safe LPG conversion.
