P0561 System Voltage Unstable
The P0561 trouble code indicates that the vehicle’s control module has detected that the system voltage is unstable or is not remaining within the expected electrical range.
Unlike P0562, which specifically indicates low system voltage, P0561 is more concerned with voltage instability. The voltage may be fluctuating, dropping and recovering unexpectedly, or changing in a way that the control module considers abnormal.
This does not automatically mean that the battery is bad. The cause can be somewhere in the battery, alternator, voltage regulator, wiring, grounds, battery terminals, charging-control circuit, or power distribution system.

Depending on the vehicle, this can be done with a scan tool, multimeter, or suitable electrical diagnostic equipment.
Observe the voltage during:
Engine starting
A significant voltage drop during cranking can point toward battery condition, starter current demand, or poor battery connections.
Engine idle
Check whether the charging system remains stable.
Electrical load changes
Switch headlights, blower motor, rear defogger, heated seats, and other significant loads on and off while observing the system.

Monitor the charging system while engine speed changes.
The objective is not simply to find a particular voltage number. It is to determine whether the electrical system behaves consistently and within the manufacturer's specified range.
Do Not Use One Universal Charging Voltage
Older vehicles are often diagnosed using a relatively simple charging-voltage expectation.
Modern vehicles can be considerably more complicated.
Many use smart charging systems in which alternator output is deliberately varied according to battery condition, temperature, electrical demand, engine operating conditions, and other parameters.
Therefore, seeing the system voltage change does not automatically mean the alternator is faulty.
The correct question is:
Does the voltage change in the way the vehicle's charging system is designed to change?
Manufacturer-specific specifications and charging-system information should be used when evaluating P0561.
Check the Battery Management System
Some vehicles use a battery monitoring sensor or intelligent battery-management system.
Depending on the design, the system can monitor battery current, voltage, temperature, and state of charge and communicate this information to the vehicle's control modules.
A problem with the battery sensor, its connector, wiring, or communication can sometimes contribute to charging-system irregularities.
This does not mean the battery sensor should automatically be replaced. Its readings and circuit should be verified first.

Can You Drive With P0561?
That depends on whether the voltage problem is still occurring.
If P0561 was caused by a brief electrical event and the charging system is currently stable, the vehicle may continue operating normally.
However, if the voltage is actively fluctuating, continuing to drive can be risky.

The most effective diagnosis is to determine when the voltage becomes unstable and where the voltage variation is occurring.
A proper diagnosis should combine freeze-frame data, live voltage monitoring, charging-system testing, voltage-drop measurements, battery testing, and inspection of the main power and ground connections.
Most importantly, if P0561 appears together with many unrelated electronic fault codes, investigate the vehicle's main electrical supply first. A single unstable voltage source can make several otherwise healthy systems report faults at the same time.
