P0568 Cruise Control "SET" Signal Malfunction

The P0568 trouble code indicates that the vehicle's control module has detected a problem with the SET signal of the cruise control system.

The SET command is generated when the driver presses the cruise control button or switch used to set the current vehicle speed. Depending on the vehicle, the same SET function may also be used to decrease the stored cruise-control speed when the cruise control is already active.

P0568 does not necessarily mean that the cruise control switch is defective. The code tells us that the control module is receiving an unexpected, incorrect, intermittent, or otherwise implausible SET signal. The actual cause can be the switch, wiring, connector, clock spring, resistor network, reference voltage, or the control module's interpretation of the signal.

How the SET Signal Works

Cruise control requires several commands from the driver. Depending on the vehicle, these can include:

  • ON

  • OFF

  • SET

  • COAST

  • RESUME

  • ACCEL

When the driver presses SET, the cruise-control system normally stores the vehicle's current speed and begins controlling the throttle or powertrain to maintain that speed.

On many vehicles, the steering-wheel cruise buttons do not have a dedicated electrical wire for every individual function. Instead, several switches can share an input circuit through different resistance values.

The control module measures the resulting voltage and determines which button the driver has pressed.

For example, one voltage range may represent SET, another may represent RESUME, and another may represent ACCEL.

This is why a seemingly simple switch fault can sometimes create an electrical signal that the module interprets as the wrong command.

What Does "Signal Malfunction" Mean?

P0568 is different from a code specifically describing a Circuit Low, Circuit High, or Circuit Open condition.

The important word here is "Malfunction."

The control module has determined that the SET signal is not behaving as expected.

The signal may:

  • Be missing when the SET button is pressed.

  • Have an incorrect voltage.

  • Have an incorrect resistance.

  • Change unpredictably.

  • Intermittently disappear.

  • Be interpreted as another cruise-control command.

  • Remain active longer than expected.

  • Appear without the driver pressing the button.

Therefore, simply checking whether the SET button physically clicks is not enough to diagnose P0568.

Common Causes of P0568

Faulty cruise control SET switch

The internal contacts can wear or become contaminated. The switch may still feel completely normal but produce an incorrect electrical signal.

If the system uses a resistor-based switch network, the resistance corresponding to the SET position can also change with age or internal damage.

Damaged wiring

A partially broken wire or damaged insulation can cause an intermittent SET signal.

This is particularly relevant to steering-wheel controls because the wiring may move as the steering wheel is turned.

Poor electrical connection

A loose terminal, corrosion, moisture, or poor connector contact can alter the signal reaching the control module.

Faulty clock spring

If the cruise-control buttons are mounted on the steering wheel, their electrical signals commonly pass through the clock spring.

A worn or damaged clock spring can interrupt the SET signal intermittently.

If the cruise control behaves differently depending on steering-wheel position, this becomes an important area to investigate.

However, P0568 alone does not prove that the clock spring is defective.

Incorrect resistance in the switch circuit

On vehicles using a resistor ladder, the control module expects a particular voltage or resistance for the SET command.

A switch with the wrong resistance can cause the module to see an invalid or different command.

Short circuit or unwanted voltage

A short to ground, short to another circuit, or unwanted voltage entering the cruise-control input can produce an incorrect SET signal.

Reference voltage or ground problem

Some cruise-control switch circuits depend on a reference or supply voltage. An unstable supply or poor ground can affect the entire switch signal.

Control-module problem

A fault inside the module's input circuit is possible, but it should generally be considered only after the external circuit has been tested.

What Symptoms Can P0568 Cause?

The symptoms depend on how the vehicle's cruise-control system is designed and how severe the signal problem is.

A vehicle with P0568 may have:

  • Cruise control that will not activate.

  • A SET button that does nothing.

  • Cruise control that works intermittently.

  • Cruise control that activates but does not respond correctly to SET/COAST commands.

  • Cruise control that disengages unexpectedly.

  • A cruise-control warning light.

  • A stored or pending P0568 code.

  • Other cruise-control buttons that work normally while SET does not.

In some vehicles, the control module will disable the entire cruise-control system after detecting an unreliable input. This is a safety measure because the module must be able to trust the driver's commands.

How to Diagnose P0568

The best starting point is to scan for all stored and pending codes, rather than concentrating on P0568 alone.

Other codes involving the brake switch, steering-wheel controls, ABS/ESC system, communication networks, or cruise control can provide important information.

If the scan tool provides cruise-control switch live data, monitor the SET parameter while pressing and releasing the button.

Ideally, the scan tool should show a clear transition when the SET command is activated.

If the SET button is physically pressed but the control module never recognizes the command, attention should turn toward the switch and its electrical circuit.

If the module recognizes SET correctly but the cruise-control system still behaves incorrectly, the diagnosis needs to move further into the cruise-control control logic and related systems.

Testing the SET Switch

The switch should be tested using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.

If it uses a resistor network, measure the resistance or voltage corresponding to the SET position.

Do not use a generic resistance value as a universal specification. Different manufacturers use different resistor values and voltage thresholds.

A useful test is to monitor the signal while repeatedly pressing and releasing SET.

The signal should change consistently and predictably.

If it jumps between values, disappears, remains fixed, or produces an unexpected voltage, there may be a problem with the switch or the wiring.

Checking the Clock Spring

For steering-wheel-mounted controls, the clock spring deserves special attention.

The clock spring allows electrical connections to remain available while the steering wheel rotates. Repeated movement can eventually damage its internal conductive tracks or connections.

An intermittent P0568 that appears when the steering wheel is turned can therefore be a valuable clue.

Other steering-wheel functions may also be affected if the clock spring is damaged. For example, the horn, steering-wheel buttons, or other controls may develop intermittent problems.

Still, the correct approach is to measure the circuit rather than replacing the clock spring based solely on the DTC.

Inspecting Wiring and Connectors

The wiring between the cruise-control switch and the relevant control module should be inspected carefully.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Loose terminals

  • Corroded connector pins

  • Broken wires

  • Chafed insulation

  • Pinched wiring

  • Previous wiring repairs

  • Moisture inside connectors

  • Wiring around the steering column

  • Connections to the steering-wheel switch assembly

An intermittent electrical problem may not be visible during a simple inspection.

A continuity test can also be misleading. A wire may show continuity when stationary but develop excessive resistance when moved.

For an intermittent P0568, monitoring the signal while gently moving the harness can sometimes expose the fault.

Why Replacing the Cruise Control Switch Is Not Always the Answer

The SET switch is certainly one of the possible causes, but P0568 does not say "SET switch defective."

It says that the SET signal is malfunctioning.

This distinction is important.

If the switch is replaced without checking the wiring, connector, resistance, voltage, and clock spring, the original problem can remain.

The same applies to replacing a control module simply because the code returns.

A better diagnostic sequence is:

SET switch → connector → wiring → clock spring where applicable → reference/signal circuit → control module

The exact order can vary depending on the vehicle's circuit design.

Can P0568 Affect Normal Driving?

P0568 generally does not indicate a direct failure of the engine, transmission, accelerator pedal, or braking system.

The vehicle can often be driven normally, but cruise control may be unavailable or unreliable.

Because cruise control depends on accurate driver commands, it is better not to rely on the system until the SET signal problem has been diagnosed.

P0568 vs. P0567 and Other Cruise Control Codes

The P056x group contains several cruise-control-related faults, and the individual code helps identify which part of the driver's input system has been detected as abnormal.

P0568 specifically points toward the SET signal.

That is different from a general cruise-control malfunction or a code specifically indicating a low or high electrical signal.

This distinction is useful during diagnosis because the technician should concentrate on the electrical path associated with the SET command rather than automatically replacing the entire cruise-control system.

The Most Important Point About P0568

P0568 means the control module is not seeing the cruise-control SET signal behaving as expected.

It does not automatically identify a failed switch.

The problem can originate from the SET switch itself, a resistor network, wiring, connector terminals, the steering-wheel clock spring, a reference or signal circuit, or—less commonly—the control module.

The most reliable diagnosis is therefore based on live-data observation and electrical testing using the vehicle-specific wiring diagram and manufacturer specifications.

If SET works sometimes and fails at other times, an intermittent connection, switch contact problem, or clock-spring issue becomes particularly interesting. If SET never appears in live data, the switch circuit should be electrically tested before replacing expensive components.
