The P0527 trouble code means that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a problem with the cooling fan speed sensor circuit. More specifically, the control module is receiving a fan-speed signal, but that signal is not behaving within the expected range or does not correspond correctly to the fan speed the system expects.

This is an important distinction. P0527 does not necessarily mean that the cooling fan has completely stopped working. With the vehicle safely switched off, the fan assembly can be inspected for obvious damage, excessive play, physical obstruction, or signs of bearing problems. The manufacturer's safety procedures should always be followed because electric cooling fans can start unexpectedly, even when the engine is not running.

Inspect the wiring and connector

Can P0527 be caused by the cooling fan itself?

Yes, but the exact failure can be electrical or mechanical.

A fan motor that has internal wear may still operate but fail to reach the required speed. Similarly, a fan with excessive mechanical resistance can draw abnormal current and fail to respond correctly to the command.

On electronically controlled fans, the controller may also be integrated into the fan assembly, making the diagnosis more complicated.

This is why comparing commanded speed, actual physical speed, and reported feedback speed is much more useful than simply asking whether the fan turns on.
