P0064 HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 3)

P0064 is set when the engine control module (ECM/PCM) detects an abnormally high electrical condition in the heater control circuit of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) on Bank 2, Sensor 3.

Unlike an oxygen-sensor code that concerns the sensor's exhaust-gas reading, P0064 specifically points toward the heater circuit. The sensor may still be capable of measuring oxygen correctly, but the ECM has detected that the electrical side responsible for heating the sensor is not behaving as expected.

This distinction is important because replacing the oxygen sensor immediately is not always the correct repair. A shorted wire, damaged connector, incorrect sensor, or problem with the heater control circuit can produce the same DTC.

Why Does an Oxygen Sensor Need a Heater?

An oxygen sensor needs to reach a sufficiently high operating temperature before it can provide useful readings.

Waiting for exhaust heat alone would take longer, especially during a cold start. A built-in electrical heating element allows the sensor to reach its operating temperature much faster.

This helps the engine management system begin using oxygen-sensor information earlier and allows emissions-control functions to operate more effectively.

The heater is essentially a separate electrical load built into the sensor.

The ECM may control this heater directly or through a dedicated control strategy. Depending on the vehicle, the heater circuit can involve a power supply, ground-side switching, fuses, wiring, connectors, and the ECM's internal driver.

Breaking Down P0064

HO2S means Heated Oxygen Sensor.

Bank 2 identifies the engine bank that does not contain cylinder number 1.

Sensor 3 identifies the manufacturer's designated third sensor position on that bank.

Heater Control Circuit High means the ECM has detected an electrical condition on the heater control circuit that is higher than the expected range.

The word “High” does not necessarily mean that the oxygen sensor itself is too hot.

It refers primarily to the electrical condition of the heater control circuit.

This is an important distinction when diagnosing P0064.

Where Is Bank 2 Sensor 3?

The exact location depends on the engine and exhaust configuration.

Bank 2 is normally the cylinder bank opposite the bank containing cylinder #1 on a V-type engine.

Sensor 3 is manufacturer-specific. A vehicle with several oxygen sensors may have Sensor 3 farther downstream in the exhaust system than Sensor 1 or Sensor 2.

Some vehicles use different sensor numbering conventions, particularly when multiple catalytic converters or exhaust branches are involved.

For that reason, do not replace a sensor simply because it appears to be the third sensor you can see.

The vehicle-specific wiring diagram and service information should be used to identify the correct Bank 2 Sensor 3 and its heater circuit.

What Does “Circuit High” Mean?

This is where P0064 can easily be misunderstood.

A high circuit code does not automatically mean high heater temperature.

The ECM is monitoring the electrical behavior of the heater control circuit. If the voltage or control state is higher than expected under particular operating conditions, the module can store P0064.

Depending on the circuit design, possible electrical causes include:

  • A control wire shorted to battery voltage

  • Incorrect wiring

  • A damaged connector

  • An open or improperly controlled circuit

  • A failed heater element

  • Incorrect sensor installation

  • A problem with the ECM's heater driver

  • An abnormal power supply

  • A wiring repair that has connected the circuit incorrectly

The exact interpretation depends on the manufacturer's circuit design.

The Most Common Causes of P0064

Short to battery voltage

One of the first electrical possibilities to investigate is an unintended connection between the heater control wire and a voltage source.

If the control circuit is supposed to be switched by the ECM but is receiving voltage continuously, the module may interpret the condition as excessively high.

Damaged oxygen sensor wiring

Oxygen sensor wiring is exposed to extreme exhaust temperatures.

A harness that is routed too close to the exhaust can melt or become brittle. Once the insulation is damaged, the wire can contact another circuit or the vehicle's power supply.

Damaged connector

The connector at Bank 2 Sensor 3 can develop:

  • Corroded terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Loose terminals

  • Water contamination

  • Heat damage

  • Poor electrical contact

A connector can look acceptable externally while having a poor terminal connection internally.

Faulty oxygen sensor heater

The heating element inside the sensor can fail electrically.

However, a failed heater does not automatically explain a “High” circuit condition. The heater and its surrounding control circuit need to be tested to determine what the ECM is actually seeing.

Incorrect oxygen sensor

Installing the wrong sensor can create heater-control problems.

Two sensors can physically fit the same exhaust location while having different heater characteristics or wiring configurations.

This is particularly worth checking when P0064 appears immediately after an oxygen sensor replacement.

Incorrect previous wiring repair

A previous repair may have connected the heater wires incorrectly or damaged the circuit while working on the exhaust.

This possibility becomes more significant if the vehicle has recently had exhaust, catalytic-converter, oxygen-sensor, or engine work.

Fuse or power-supply problem

Depending on the vehicle design, the heater circuit may receive power through a shared fuse or relay.

A fuse problem more commonly produces a no-heater or low-function condition, but the complete circuit must still be checked rather than assuming the fault is inside the sensor.

ECM heater driver problem

The ECM may contain the transistor or driver responsible for controlling the heater.

If the sensor, wiring, power supply, grounds, and connectors all test correctly, the ECM control side may need to be investigated.

The ECM should generally be one of the last components blamed.

Symptoms of P0064

The symptoms can be surprisingly mild.

Some vehicles may show only:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Stored P0064

Other vehicles may experience:

  • Increased emissions

  • Poor fuel economy

  • Longer time before closed-loop operation

  • Poorer cold-start behavior

  • Slight hesitation during warm-up

  • Rougher operation immediately after starting

  • Failed emissions testing

The effect depends heavily on what role Bank 2 Sensor 3 has in that particular vehicle.

A downstream sensor may have less influence on basic engine fuel control than an upstream sensor, so the vehicle can sometimes drive almost normally despite the fault.

P0064 Is Not the Same as an O2 Sensor Signal Problem

The oxygen sensor contains more than one electrical function.

One part of the sensor measures oxygen in the exhaust.

Another part is the heater circuit.

P0064 concerns the heater control circuit.

That means a vehicle can have a functioning oxygen-sensing element while simultaneously having a heater-circuit fault.

This is why a scan tool may show normal-looking oxygen-sensor information while P0064 is still stored.

Conversely, a heater problem can eventually affect sensor operation because the sensor may not reach or maintain its required operating temperature.

A Better Diagnostic Approach

Instead of starting with sensor replacement, diagnosis should follow the circuit.

Start with the complete scan

Check for other DTCs before focusing exclusively on P0064.

Other oxygen-sensor, fuel-mixture, catalytic-converter, voltage, or wiring codes can provide important clues.

Freeze-frame data can also show when the ECM detected the problem.

Confirm Bank 2 Sensor 3

Use the manufacturer's documentation to locate the exact sensor.

This avoids diagnosing the wrong component, particularly on engines with multiple oxygen sensors.

Inspect the wiring carefully

Follow the harness from the sensor toward the main wiring loom.

Look for:

  • Melted insulation

  • Chafing

  • Broken wires

  • Pinched wiring

  • Contact with the exhaust

  • Previous splices

  • Incorrect repairs

  • Oil or coolant contamination

Pay particular attention to areas where the harness passes near the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, or exhaust pipe.

Inspect the connector

Check the sensor connector for corrosion, loose terminals, damaged locking mechanisms, and signs of overheating.

Do not simply unplug and reconnect it and assume the circuit is healthy.

Terminal tension and wiring integrity can be just as important as visual appearance.

Study the wiring diagram

Determine which wires belong to:

  • Heater power

  • Heater control

  • Sensor signal

  • Sensor ground

Do not assume wire colors or pin positions are universal.

Test the heater circuit

The heater element and its control circuit should be tested according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Depending on the vehicle, this can involve checking resistance, supply voltage, control voltage, current draw, voltage drop, or the control waveform.

There is no universal heater resistance or voltage value that applies to every HO2S.

Check for an unwanted voltage

Because P0064 is a high-control-circuit code, the technician should determine whether the control wire is receiving voltage when it should not.

A short to battery voltage can be particularly important to identify.

Check the ECM control

If the wiring and sensor are known to be correct, the ECM's heater control output can be tested.

This should be done using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure because different systems switch the heater in different ways.

Why a Multimeter Alone May Not Tell the Whole Story

A simple voltage measurement can be useful, but heater control circuits are not always static.

The ECM may use pulse-width modulation (PWM) to control heater power.

In such a system, the voltage can change rapidly as the ECM adjusts heater output.

A multimeter may show an averaged value that does not reveal what is actually happening.

In difficult cases, an oscilloscope or appropriate current measurement can provide a much clearer picture of the heater-control waveform and current draw.

What If P0064 Appears After Replacing the Sensor?

If the code appeared immediately after an oxygen sensor replacement, inspect the installation before assuming the new sensor is defective.

Verify:

  • Correct sensor part number

  • Correct connector

  • Correct wiring

  • Proper connector engagement

  • No stretched wires

  • No damaged terminals

  • Harness routed away from hot exhaust components

If a universal or incorrectly wired sensor was installed, the heater circuit may not match the vehicle's original design.

A sensor that physically fits is not necessarily electrically correct.

P0064 Compared With Related Heater Codes

Several O2 heater codes look similar but describe different electrical conditions.

P0063 – HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low

The ECM detects an abnormally low electrical condition in the specified heater control circuit.

P0064 – HO2S Heater Control Circuit High

The ECM detects an abnormally high electrical condition.

P0062 – HO2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 3

This is a more general heater-control circuit malfunction for the specified sensor rather than specifically identifying a low or high condition.

These codes can overlap in the types of components involved, but their electrical behavior is different.

Can You Drive With P0064?

If the engine starts and runs normally, P0064 usually does not represent the same immediate mechanical danger as an oil-pressure or severe overheating fault.

However, it should still be diagnosed.

A heater that does not operate correctly can prevent the oxygen sensor from reaching its intended operating temperature quickly. This can increase emissions and may affect fuel-control or emissions-monitoring strategies depending on the sensor's location and the vehicle's control system.

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the engine is misfiring badly, there is severe power loss, or other serious engine faults are present, the situation should be treated separately and more urgently.

Repairing P0064

There is no single repair for this DTC.

The correct repair could be:

  • Replacing the oxygen sensor

  • Repairing a shorted control wire

  • Repairing damaged wiring

  • Replacing damaged connector terminals

  • Correcting an incorrect wiring repair

  • Repairing the heater power supply

  • Replacing a fuse or relay when confirmed faulty

  • Correcting an incorrect sensor installation

  • Repairing an ECM heater-control circuit

After the repair, the code should be cleared and the vehicle operated through the conditions required by the manufacturer to verify that the fault does not return.

The Real Meaning of P0064

P0064 is best understood as an electrical heater-control problem involving Bank 2 Sensor 3.

The ECM is not simply saying, “the oxygen sensor is bad.”

It is saying that the electrical behavior of the sensor's heater control circuit is higher than the expected range.

That leaves several possibilities: the sensor, the wiring, the connector, the power supply, the control circuit, or the ECM itself.

A careful diagnosis therefore starts at the sensor connector, follows the wiring, verifies the circuit design, checks the heater electrically, and only then considers replacing components. This approach is far more reliable than replacing Bank 2 Sensor 3 simply because P0064 appears on the scanner.
