P0369 Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1)

The P0369 diagnostic trouble code means that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an intermittent or unstable signal from the Camshaft Position Sensor “B” circuit on Bank 1.

Unlike a simple circuit fault, P0369 indicates that the signal is not necessarily missing all the time. The sensor may work normally for a while and then suddenly produce an incorrect signal, drop out, become noisy, or behave inconsistently.

P0369 Does Not Automatically Mean the Sensor Is Bad

This is especially important with an intermittent code.

The ECM is essentially saying:

“The camshaft position signal from this circuit is not consistently reliable.”

It is not necessarily saying:

“Replace the camshaft position sensor.”

For example, a perfectly good sensor can produce P0369 if a connector terminal is loose.

Similarly, a good sensor can appear to fail if its signal wire has an intermittent open circuit.

A damaged camshaft reluctor can also cause the sensor to produce a signal that becomes incorrect even though the sensor itself is functioning properly.

How to Diagnose P0369

A proper diagnosis should attempt to reproduce the intermittent fault rather than simply replacing parts.

1. Scan all modules

Start by checking all stored and pending DTCs.

Look for additional codes related to:

  • Camshaft position

  • Crankshaft position

  • Cam/crank correlation

  • Variable valve timing

  • Misfire

  • Engine speed

  • Ignition

  • Fuel injection

Additional timing-related codes can significantly narrow the diagnostic direction.

2. Check Freeze-Frame Data

Look at the conditions under which P0369 was stored.

Useful information includes:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine temperature

  • Battery voltage

  • Engine load

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine running or cranking status

If the code occurs only at a particular temperature or RPM, that information can be extremely useful.

3. Identify the Exact Sensor

Confirm which component the manufacturer calls Camshaft Position Sensor B, Bank 1.

Do not rely solely on generic internet diagrams.

Determine:

  • Sensor location

  • Connector pinout

  • Sensor technology

  • Power supply

  • Ground

  • Signal circuit

Yes.

However, temperature-related behavior does not prove that the sensor is defective. Wiring, connectors, and other components can also change their electrical characteristics as temperature changes.

Can Low Battery Voltage Cause P0369?

Low system voltage can contribute to sensor-related faults on some vehicles.

During engine cranking, voltage naturally drops. If the voltage falls too far, sensors and control modules may not operate correctly.

But low voltage should not automatically be blamed for P0369.

If voltage is suspected, check:

  • Battery condition

  • Cranking voltage

Is It Safe to Drive With P0369?

If the vehicle starts normally, runs smoothly, and only the Check Engine Light is illuminated steadily, a short drive to a repair facility may be possible.

However, the problem should not be ignored.

An intermittent camshaft signal can become more frequent and may eventually cause:

  • Engine stalling

  • Difficult starting

  • No-start

  • Significant loss of power

  • Severe drivability problems

Driving should be avoided if the vehicle is already stalling, experiencing severe misfires, or suddenly losing power.

A Practical Diagnostic Sequence

For P0369, a sensible diagnostic path is:

P0369 → scan all codes → review freeze-frame → identify Sensor B/Bank 1 → inspect sensor → inspect connector → inspect wiring → verify power and ground → perform wiggle/temperature testing if appropriate → monitor camshaft signal → capture waveform if necessary → inspect trigger/reluctor → compare camshaft and crankshaft synchronization → investigate VVT → check mechanical timing if indicated → repair → clear codes → road test under the original fault conditions → verify the signal remains stable.

The emphasis should be on finding the intermittent failure, rather than immediately replacing the sensor.

Final Thoughts
