P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input
The P0463 diagnostic trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical signal from the fuel level sensor circuit.
In everyday terms, the vehicle's computer is receiving a fuel-level signal that is higher than it expects.
This does not necessarily mean the fuel tank is actually full.
The important distinction is that “High Input” refers to the electrical signal being high, not simply to the amount of fuel inside the tank. A problem with the fuel level sensor, wiring, connector, ground or signal circuit can cause the ECM to interpret the fuel level incorrectly.
How the fuel level sensor works
The fuel level sensor is usually located inside the fuel tank and is commonly integrated with the fuel pump module.
A typical system uses a float arm connected to a variable resistor. As the fuel level changes, the float moves up and down.
That movement changes the electrical characteristics of the sensor circuit, allowing the vehicle to estimate how much fuel remains.

On some vehicles, the control module may intentionally filter fuel-level changes, so the reading may not respond immediately to every movement of the vehicle.

Don't forget the fuel tank and float mechanism

On some vehicles, the shape and position of the fuel tank can make the sender particularly sensitive to incorrect installation.
Does P0463 affect fuel delivery?
Usually, P0463 does not directly mean that the fuel pump cannot deliver fuel.
The fuel-level sensor tells the vehicle how much fuel is in the tank. It is generally separate from the pump motor's ability to pressurize the fuel system.
Therefore, a vehicle can have:
P0463 + normal fuel pressure + normal engine operation
at the same time.
However, knowing the actual fuel level is important. A faulty gauge can make it difficult to know when the tank is genuinely close to empty.
Can P0463 cause the car to run out of fuel unexpectedly?
Indirectly, yes.
If the gauge incorrectly indicates that the tank is full or contains significantly more fuel than it actually does, the driver may continue driving under the assumption that sufficient fuel remains.
The engine itself may be running perfectly normally until the tank actually becomes empty.
This makes an inaccurate fuel gauge more than just a minor inconvenience.
P0463 and fuel range calculation
Modern vehicles often calculate remaining driving range using fuel-level information together with fuel consumption data.
If the fuel-level signal is incorrect, the estimated range can also become unreliable.

These codes are related but not identical.
P0460 – Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit
This is a general fuel-level sensor circuit malfunction.
P0463 – Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit High Input
P0463 provides additional information that the electrical signal is being interpreted as too high.
This can help direct diagnosis toward an open circuit, sensor problem or other condition producing a high signal.
P0463 vs P0461
P0461 – Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit Range/Performance
This indicates that the fuel-level signal is outside the expected range or is not behaving correctly.
P0463 specifically indicates a high-input condition.
If the signal is simply implausible or outside expected performance without specifically being classified as high, P0461 may be more appropriate.
P0463 vs P0462
P0462 – Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit Low Input
This is essentially the opposite electrical direction from P0463.
P0462: signal too low.
P0463: signal too high.
The words Low and High describe the electrical signal, not the amount of fuel in the tank.
P0463 vs P0464
P0464 – Fuel Level Sensor “A” Circuit Intermittent
This indicates that the fuel-level sensor signal is dropping out or becoming unstable intermittently.
P0463 instead identifies a high-input condition.
A vehicle can potentially have different fuel-level DTCs depending on how the fault behaves during different operating conditions.
Can you drive with P0463?
Usually, the engine can continue running normally with P0463.
The more immediate concern is the accuracy of the fuel-level information.
If the gauge is stuck at full, empty or otherwise unreliable, the driver should not rely on the dashboard fuel reading to determine when to refuel.
If the vehicle also has engine-running problems, fuel-pressure problems or other fuel-system codes, those should be diagnosed separately.
The important diagnostic question
With P0463, the most useful question is not simply:
“Is the fuel level sensor bad?”
A better question is:
“Why is the control module seeing a fuel-level signal that is higher than expected?”
That question keeps the diagnosis open to the sensor, wiring, ground, connector, fuel-pump module and vehicle-specific control architecture.
If the sensor is faulty, replacing it will solve the problem. But if a connector is disconnected or a signal wire is broken, installing another sensor will accomplish nothing.
A particularly useful clue is the relationship between actual fuel level, dashboard gauge reading and scan-tool fuel-level data. When those three do not agree, the electrical and mechanical parts of the fuel-level sensing system can be tested systematically until the source of the discrepancy is found.
