The P0012 trouble code is set when the engine control module (ECM) detects that the “A” camshaft on Bank 1 is positioned too far in the retarded direction compared with the position it expects.

The freeze-frame data should also be examined. Engine speed, coolant temperature, load, and other parameters can help determine under what conditions the ECM detected the problem.

Next, check the engine oil.

Verify:

  • Oil level

  • Oil condition

  • Correct oil specification

  • Possible contamination or sludge

  • Evidence of restricted oil flow

After that, the VVT system should be evaluated using live data if the vehicle supports it.

A technician can compare the commanded camshaft position with the actual camshaft position. This is much more informative than simply checking whether the engine has a P0012 code.

If the ECM commands the camshaft to advance but the actual position remains significantly retarded, the next step is to determine whether the problem is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.

Testing the VVT Solenoid

The VVT solenoid should be inspected for contamination, damaged wiring, poor connections, and mechanical sticking.

Depending on the vehicle, a scan tool may be able to activate the solenoid while monitoring camshaft position.

If the solenoid is commanded but the camshaft position does not respond, possible causes include:
