P0406 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Sensor "A" Circuit High

The P0406 trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical signal from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Sensor "A" circuit.

The word “High” refers to the electrical signal detected by the ECM, not necessarily to excessive EGR flow or an EGR valve that is physically stuck open.

This distinction is important because P0406 can be caused by a sensor, wiring, connector, reference-voltage circuit, ground circuit, actuator, or ECM input, rather than the EGR valve itself.

What Is the EGR System?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation system reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by recirculating a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the intake.

Because exhaust gas contains relatively little oxygen, introducing a measured amount into the intake reduces combustion temperature under specific operating conditions. Lower combustion temperatures help limit NOx formation.

Modern EGR systems can be considerably more sophisticated than older vacuum-operated systems.

Depending on the engine, an EGR system may include:

  • EGR valve

  • EGR position sensor

  • EGR cooler

What Is EGR Sensor "A"?

EGR Sensor "A" is a manufacturer-specific designation.

For example, the ECM may command the EGR valve to open to a certain position. The position sensor then sends a corresponding electrical signal back to the ECM.

The ECM compares the requested position with the sensor feedback.

If the signal from Sensor A becomes higher than the expected range, P0406 may be stored.

Some vehicles use multiple EGR-related sensors, however, so Sensor A should always be identified using the vehicle-specific wiring diagram and service information.

What Does "Circuit High" Mean?

This is the most important part of P0406.

Circuit High means the ECM is seeing an electrical signal that is higher than expected.

It does not necessarily mean:

  • EGR flow is too high

  • The EGR valve is stuck open

  • The engine is receiving too much exhaust gas

  • The EGR cooler is defective

For example, a position sensor may normally produce a variable signal as the valve moves. If the signal wire becomes shorted to a voltage source, the ECM may see a voltage near the upper limit of the circuit.

An open circuit or missing sensor ground can also produce an unexpectedly high signal on certain sensor designs.

Therefore, P0406 requires electrical diagnosis rather than simply cleaning or replacing the EGR valve.

Common Causes of P0406

Faulty EGR position sensor

The sensor can develop an internal electrical fault and produce a signal that is higher than expected.

On some vehicles, the position sensor is integrated directly into the EGR valve assembly.

Signal wire shorted to voltage

A damaged wire can contact:

  • Battery voltage

  • Another power circuit

  • A reference-voltage circuit

This can raise the EGR sensor signal and trigger P0406.

Open sensor ground

A poor or disconnected sensor ground can cause the sensor signal to become abnormal.

This is an important possibility because the problem may appear to be a high signal even though the sensor itself is not defective.

Reference voltage problem

Many EGR position sensors operate using a reference voltage supplied by the ECM.

If the reference circuit is abnormal, the sensor output may also become incorrect.

If multiple sensors report unusual readings at the same time, a shared reference or ground problem should be investigated.

Damaged connector

A loose, corroded, contaminated, or damaged connector can interfere with the sensor signal.

Inspect for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent pins

  • Loose terminals

  • Spread terminals

  • Water intrusion

  • Oil contamination

  • Pushed-back terminals

EGR valve or actuator problem

If the position sensor is integrated into the EGR assembly, a mechanical or actuator problem can affect the feedback signal.

Carbon deposits can also prevent the EGR valve from moving properly.

However, carbon buildup alone does not automatically explain an electrical circuit-high fault.

Damaged wiring harness

EGR components are often exposed to significant engine heat and vibration.

Wiring can become:

  • Brittle

  • Melted

  • Chafed

  • Pinched

  • Broken internally

The wiring near the EGR valve and exhaust components deserves particular attention.

Incorrect replacement component

An incorrect EGR valve or sensor can produce an incompatible electrical signal even if the component physically fits.

ECM/PCM fault

A problem with the ECM's sensor input circuit is possible but relatively uncommon.

The external circuit should be tested thoroughly before blaming the control module.

Symptoms of P0406

The symptoms depend on the vehicle and the way its EGR system is designed.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Rough idle

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Reduced engine performance

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Engine stalling

  • Increased NOx emissions

  • Failed emissions inspection

  • Limp mode

  • EGR-related warning messages

Some vehicles may have almost no noticeable symptoms apart from the Check Engine Light.

This is possible because EGR operation occurs only under certain engine conditions.

Can P0406 Cause Rough Idle?

It can, but P0406 itself does not prove that the EGR valve is physically stuck open.

If the EGR valve is mechanically stuck open, exhaust gas can enter the intake when it should not. This can produce:

  • Rough idle

  • Low idle speed

  • Stalling

  • Hesitation

  • Poor starting

But if the actual problem is a sensor signal wire shorted to voltage, the valve may be mechanically perfect.

Therefore, the electrical signal should be verified before assuming a mechanical EGR problem.

How to Diagnose P0406

A proper diagnosis should begin with the EGR sensor circuit and live data.

1. Scan for all DTCs

Check for stored and pending codes.

Pay attention to:

  • Other EGR codes

  • Sensor reference-voltage codes

  • Sensor ground codes

  • MAP/MAF codes

  • Throttle-related codes

  • Communication codes

If several sensors suddenly show high signals, the problem may be a shared electrical supply or ground rather than several failed sensors.

Check the Freeze-Frame Data

Freeze-frame data can show the operating conditions when P0406 was detected.

Useful information includes:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine coolant temperature

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine load

  • EGR commanded position

  • EGR actual position

  • Sensor voltage

  • Battery voltage

This can help determine whether the problem occurs at idle, acceleration, cruising, or when the ECM commands a particular EGR position.

Check EGR Sensor Live Data

If the vehicle provides EGR position data, compare:

Commanded EGR position ↔ Actual EGR position

If the ECM commands the valve to different positions but the sensor remains near an extreme value, the sensor circuit deserves close attention.

A sensor that remains fixed at a very high value regardless of valve movement is suspicious.

Inspect the Connector and Wiring

Disconnect the EGR sensor or valve connector and inspect it carefully.

Look for:

  • Corrosion

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose pins

  • Water intrusion

  • Oil contamination

  • Damaged locks

  • Pushed-back terminals

Then inspect the harness itself.

Pay special attention to wiring close to:

  • EGR valve

  • Exhaust manifold

  • EGR cooler

  • Turbocharger

  • Engine brackets

  • Heat shields

Heat and vibration can create intermittent or permanent wiring problems.

Test the Reference Voltage

If the sensor uses a reference-voltage circuit, verify that the reference supply is correct.

The exact specification depends on the vehicle.

Do not assume that every EGR position sensor uses the same reference voltage or electrical architecture.

Test the Sensor Ground

A poor ground can cause a sensor signal to become abnormally high.

The ground should be tested according to the manufacturer's procedure, preferably under the appropriate operating/load conditions.

A basic continuity check is not always enough to identify excessive resistance in a ground circuit.

Check for a Short to Voltage

Because P0406 indicates a high signal, the sensor signal circuit should be checked for an unwanted connection to a power source.

If the signal wire is contacting a voltage supply, the ECM may interpret this as a high sensor signal.

The exact testing procedure should follow the vehicle's wiring diagram.

Test the EGR Valve Mechanically

If the electrical circuit appears correct, investigate the mechanical side.

Check whether the EGR valve:

  • Moves freely

  • Reaches the commanded position

  • Is heavily carbonized

  • Is mechanically stuck

  • Has a damaged actuator

  • Has damaged linkage

Carbon buildup is particularly common on some engines and can prevent the valve from moving correctly.

Perform an Active Test

A bidirectional diagnostic scanner can be extremely useful if the vehicle supports EGR actuator testing.

Command the EGR valve through different positions and observe the sensor feedback.

The response should be logical for the particular sensor design.

A problem may be indicated if the signal:

  • Remains fixed

  • Jumps suddenly

  • Reaches an implausible maximum

  • Moves in the wrong direction

  • Does not correspond to valve movement

Don't Rely Only on Sensor Resistance

An EGR position sensor may not be diagnosed correctly by simply measuring resistance.

Many modern position sensors are integrated into an electronic actuator assembly and use a reference, ground, and signal circuit.

The more useful approach is generally to verify:

Reference → Ground → Signal → Commanded position → Actual position

The manufacturer's diagnostic procedure should determine the expected values.

P0406 Does Not Automatically Mean the EGR Valve Needs Replacement

This is one of the most common diagnostic mistakes.

Seeing:

P0406 → EGR sensor high → replace EGR valve

is not sufficient.

For example, suppose the EGR sensor signal wire is damaged and touching a voltage supply.

Replacing the EGR valve would not repair that wiring problem.

Likewise, if the sensor ground is open, the sensor may be perfectly functional but unable to provide a correct signal.

The electrical circuit should therefore be tested before replacing expensive EGR components.

P0405 – EGR Sensor "A" Circuit Low

The ECM detects an abnormally low electrical signal from EGR Sensor A.

P0406 – EGR Sensor "A" Circuit High

The ECM detects an abnormally high electrical signal from EGR Sensor A.

These codes describe opposite electrical conditions within the same general sensor circuit.

P0406 vs P0407

P0407 – EGR Sensor "B" Circuit Low

This concerns Sensor B and identifies a low electrical signal.

P0406 concerns Sensor A and identifies a high signal.

P0406 vs P0408

P0408 – EGR Sensor "B" Circuit High

P0408 is very similar to P0406 electrically, but it concerns Sensor B rather than Sensor A.

The exact physical meaning of Sensor A and Sensor B depends on the vehicle.

P0406 vs P0400

P0400 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Malfunction

P0400 is a broader EGR flow-related code.

P0406 is specifically associated with a high electrical signal from EGR Sensor A.

This means an engine can have normal EGR flow and still set P0406 if the sensor circuit is electrically incorrect.

Conversely, an EGR system can have a genuine flow problem without necessarily producing P0406.

Can You Drive With P0406?

In many cases, the vehicle can still be driven if the engine is running normally and the Check Engine Light remains steady.

However, the vehicle may experience:

  • Increased emissions

  • Poor fuel economy

  • Rough operation

  • Hesitation

  • Reduced performance

  • Failed emissions testing

  • Limp mode

If the engine is stalling, running very poorly, entering limp mode, or the Check Engine Light is flashing, diagnosis should be treated as more urgent.

A Practical Diagnostic Path

For P0406, a logical diagnostic sequence is:

P0406 → scan all codes → check freeze-frame → identify EGR Sensor A → inspect connector and wiring → verify reference voltage → verify sensor ground → check signal circuit → test for short to voltage → compare commanded and actual EGR position → inspect valve movement → perform active test → verify the repair.

The key point is that “circuit high” describes an electrical signal condition, not necessarily excessive EGR flow.

A failed sensor can cause P0406, but so can a shorted signal wire, an open sensor ground, a connector problem, an incorrect reference circuit, or an issue within the actuator assembly. Proper diagnosis should determine which of these conditions is actually present before any component is replaced.
