Check the VVT Solenoid Circuit

Inspect the electrical side of the VVT system carefully.

Check for:

  • Damaged wiring

  • Loose terminals

  • Corroded connectors

  • Oil contamination

  • Short circuits

  • Open circuits

  • Incorrect supply voltage

  • Poor ground

  • Abnormal control signal

Resistance measurements can be useful, but resistance alone does not prove that a solenoid is functioning correctly under operating conditions.

Where supported by the vehicle manufacturer, an actuator test can provide much better information.

Check the Camshaft Position Signal

The camshaft position sensor tells the ECM where the camshaft is located.

A faulty sensor or damaged wiring can produce incorrect position information.

Inspect the sensor and circuit for:

  • Connector damage

  • Corrosion

  • Wiring breaks

  • Chafing

  • Oil contamination

  • Poor terminal contact

  • Unstable signal

However, if the sensor signal is stable and accurately reflects an advanced camshaft position, replacing the sensor will not correct a mechanically or hydraulically advanced camshaft.

Measure Oil Pressure When Necessary

If the VVT components appear electrically functional, engine oil pressure may need to be checked.

This is especially important when P0021 is accompanied by other symptoms suggesting a lubrication problem.

An engine can have a normal oil level while still having insufficient oil pressure because of an oil pump problem, excessive internal clearance, a blocked pickup, or another mechanical issue.

Since the VVT system depends on adequate oil pressure, this can directly affect camshaft positioning.

What About the Bank 2 Designation?

Bank 2 refers to the cylinder bank that does not contain cylinder #1 on a typical V-engine.

P0021 is therefore not a universal indication of a particular physical location such as “the left side of the engine.” The actual location depends on the engine design and vehicle configuration.

Likewise, the exact meaning of “A” camshaft is manufacturer-specific, although it is commonly associated with the intake camshaft on many engines.

The vehicle's service information should be used to identify the correct camshaft and VVT components before testing or replacing parts.

Could a Timing Chain Cause P0021?

Yes.

A timing chain that has stretched or developed excessive mechanical play can alter the relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft.

The situation becomes even more suspicious when P0021 is accompanied by:

  • Timing-chain rattling

  • Difficult starting

  • Multiple camshaft timing codes

  • Engine misfires

  • Poor performance

  • Abnormal camshaft/crankshaft synchronization data

If the mechanical timing is incorrect, replacing a VVT solenoid or camshaft sensor will not solve the problem.

Is P0021 Serious?

P0021 should be taken seriously, particularly if the engine has noticeable drivability problems or mechanical noise.

A small VVT control problem may allow the vehicle to continue operating, but an underlying timing-chain, phaser, or lubrication problem can become more expensive if ignored.

If the engine develops severe rattling, major power loss, repeated misfires, difficult starting, or other serious symptoms, continued driving should be minimized until the cause is established.

The Most Efficient Repair Strategy

A sensible diagnosis generally progresses from the easiest checks to the more involved ones.

Begin with the engine oil and verify that its level, condition, viscosity, and specification are correct.

Then inspect the VVT solenoid and its wiring. After that, use live data to compare commanded and actual camshaft positions.

If the camshaft remains advanced despite correct electrical commands, investigate oil flow, oil pressure, the camshaft phaser, and mechanical timing.

This approach prevents the common mistake of replacing several components simply because the code points toward the camshaft timing system.

Repairs That May Resolve P0021

Depending on the actual fault, the repair may involve:

  • Correcting low engine oil level

  • Replacing incorrect or contaminated engine oil

  • Replacing the oil filter

  • Cleaning or replacing a restricted VVT solenoid

  • Repairing VVT wiring or connectors

  • Correcting an oil-pressure problem

  • Cleaning restricted VVT oil passages

  • Replacing a defective camshaft phaser

  • Repairing the timing chain or tensioner

  • Correcting incorrect mechanical timing

  • Replacing a defective camshaft position sensor

The ECM is normally a much later suspect and should not be replaced simply because P0021 remains after replacing other parts.

After the Repair

Once the underlying problem has been repaired, clear the stored code and test the vehicle under different engine speeds and loads.

If possible, monitor the VVT system during the test.

The actual camshaft position should follow the commanded position without remaining excessively advanced.

A successful repair is not simply the disappearance of the Check Engine Light. The important confirmation is that the camshaft responds correctly to VVT commands and P0021 does not return.
