P0522 Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Voltage

The P0522 trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally low electrical signal or voltage from the engine oil pressure sensor/switch circuit.

This code is closely related to engine oil pressure, but there is an important distinction:

P0522 does not automatically mean that the engine's actual oil pressure is too low.

The code specifically identifies a problem with the electrical signal coming from the oil pressure monitoring circuit. The engine may have perfectly normal mechanical oil pressure while the sensor, wiring, connector, or circuit is telling the ECM that pressure is extremely low.

However, because a genuine low-oil-pressure condition can also produce an abnormal sensor signal, actual oil pressure should not be assumed to be normal simply because P0522 is present.

What does “Low Voltage” mean in P0522?

Using a suitable scan tool, the reported oil pressure can be monitored where the vehicle supports this parameter.

If the scan tool shows an extremely low or implausible oil pressure value while the engine appears to be operating normally, the sensor and electrical circuit should be investigated.

For example, an engine operating normally at a condition where oil pressure should clearly be present but the ECM reports almost no pressure may indicate a signal problem.

However, scan-tool data alone cannot always prove that mechanical oil pressure is healthy.

Mechanical pressure is normal, but the ECM reports very low pressure

Mechanical pressure is genuinely too low

The problem must be investigated as a lubrication-system fault.

This distinction prevents a technician from replacing an oil pressure sensor when the engine actually has a serious mechanical problem.

Check the wiring for a short to ground

Because P0522 specifically indicates a low electrical signal, a signal circuit shorted to ground is an important possibility.

The electrical signal from the oil pressure sensor/switch circuit is below the expected threshold.

P0523 – Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Circuit High Voltage

The electrical signal is above the expected threshold.

These descriptions refer primarily to the electrical signal, not directly to the physical oil pressure.

P0524, on the other hand, specifically indicates Engine Oil Pressure Too Low, making verification of actual mechanical oil pressure particularly important.

A practical diagnostic example

Consider an engine that starts normally and runs quietly.

The Check Engine Light comes on and P0522 is stored. The scan tool shows an extremely low oil-pressure value.

Instead of immediately replacing the oil pressure sensor, the technician checks the oil level and then measures actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

Suppose the mechanical gauge shows that oil pressure is completely normal.

Now the investigation can focus on the sensor, connector, signal wire, reference circuit, and ground.

If the signal wire is found shorted to ground, the problem has been identified.

In another vehicle, the same P0522 code may be accompanied by an oil pressure warning light and engine ticking.

A mechanical pressure test then shows genuinely low oil pressure.

In that situation, replacing the sensor would be the wrong repair. The lubrication system needs to be investigated for the cause of the actual pressure loss.

What should be repaired?

The correct repair depends on the diagnostic results.

Possible repairs include:

For that reason, the safest diagnostic approach is to check the oil level, inspect the sensor and wiring, evaluate the sensor signal with a scan tool, and—when there is any doubt—verify actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

If an oil-pressure warning light is illuminated or the engine is making unusual ticking, tapping, or knocking noises, the vehicle should not continue to be driven until actual oil pressure has been verified.
