P0019 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 2 Sensor B)

The P0019 diagnostic trouble code indicates that the engine control module (ECM) has detected a problem with the timing relationship between the crankshaft and the “B” camshaft on Bank 2.

This is fundamentally a synchronization problem. The ECM receives position information from the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and constantly compares their relationship. That relationship should remain within a specific range.

When the camshaft position reported by Sensor B no longer matches the crankshaft position as expected, the ECM can store P0019.

Bank 2 and Sensor B Matter

P0019 specifically identifies Bank 2 Sensor B, so the diagnosis needs to focus on the correct camshaft.

On a typical V-engine, Bank 2 is the cylinder bank that does not contain cylinder #1.

The “B” camshaft designation is manufacturer-specific, although it is commonly associated with the exhaust camshaft on many engines.

The exact physical location should therefore be confirmed using the manufacturer's service information rather than assuming that “Sensor B” always means the same camshaft on every engine.

Timing Chain Problems Deserve Serious Attention

If P0019 appears together with mechanical symptoms, the timing system should be investigated carefully.

Warning signs include:

  • Rattling from the timing-chain area

  • Difficult starting

  • Engine misfires

The most useful starting point is to determine whether the problem is electrical, VVT-related, or genuinely mechanical.

First, scan for all stored and pending DTCs. Other camshaft, crankshaft, VVT, or misfire codes can change the direction of the diagnosis.

Then inspect the engine oil and check its level and condition.

After that, examine the camshaft and crankshaft sensor connectors and wiring, especially if the code appeared suddenly.

A capable scan tool should then be used to monitor the camshaft and crankshaft signals and, where available, the VVT commanded and actual positions.

Look at Camshaft Data Instead of Guessing

Live data can provide valuable information about what the ECM believes is happening.

If the scan tool provides the relevant parameters, compare:

  • Desired camshaft position

  • Actual camshaft position

  • Engine RPM

  • VVT command

  • Crankshaft position

  • Camshaft position

If the actual camshaft position consistently differs from the expected position, the investigation should move toward the VVT system and mechanical timing.

If the signal itself is erratic or suddenly drops out, the sensor and wiring become more suspicious.

Inspect the Mechanical Timing

If the electrical signals are correct but the correlation remains incorrect, the mechanical timing system needs to be checked.

Depending on the engine, this may involve inspecting:

  • Timing chain

  • Timing belt

  • Chain guides

  • Tensioner

  • Camshaft phaser

  • Timing marks

  • Crankshaft timing position

If the engine has recently had timing-chain or cylinder-head work, incorrect timing installation should receive particular attention.

Even a relatively small timing error can cause a camshaft/crankshaft correlation code.

What If the Code Appears Only Occasionally?

An intermittent P0019 can be especially useful diagnostically.

For example, if the code appears primarily during:

  • Cold starts

  • Hot starts

  • Rapid acceleration

  • High engine RPM

  • Deceleration

  • Changes in engine load

the operating conditions can provide clues.

The engine may continue to run despite P0019, but symptoms can vary considerably.

However, if P0019 is caused by a stretched timing chain, failed tensioner, damaged timing component, or severely malfunctioning camshaft phaser, continuing to operate the engine can potentially make the problem worse.

Particular caution is warranted if there is:

  • Major loss of power

  • Engine stalling

  • Multiple timing-related DTCs

In these situations, the vehicle should be diagnosed promptly rather than continuing to drive normally and hoping the code disappears.

Common Diagnostic Mistakes

One of the most common mistakes with P0019 is replacing a camshaft position sensor without verifying the correlation problem.

Other mistakes include:

  • Ignoring engine oil condition

  • Replacing a VVT solenoid without testing it

  • Assuming the timing chain is fine because the engine still runs

  • Ignoring the crankshaft sensor

  • Failing to compare commanded and actual camshaft position

  • Replacing the camshaft phaser without confirming the fault

  • Checking only electrical continuity

  • Ignoring other stored DTCs

  • Replacing the ECM prematurely

P0019 is a code where understanding why the two position signals no longer agree is much more useful than simply identifying a component associated with the code.

Possible Repairs

The correct repair depends on the source of the correlation problem.

  • Repairing camshaft or crankshaft sensor wiring

  • Replacing a defective position sensor

  • Repairing damaged connectors or terminals
