P000B Exhaust "B" Camshaft Position Slow Response (Bank 1)

The P000B trouble code indicates that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected that the Bank 1 "B" camshaft is responding more slowly than expected when its position is being changed or controlled.

In simpler terms, the ECM commands a camshaft position change, but the camshaft does not reach the expected position quickly enough.

This is primarily a camshaft timing response/performance problem. It does not automatically mean that the camshaft position sensor is defective, nor does it necessarily mean that the timing chain has jumped.

What Does "B" Camshaft Mean?

The terminology can be confusing because "B" does not have one universal meaning across every engine.

On many engines, manufacturers use:

  • A camshaft for one camshaft

  • B camshaft for another camshaft

In many applications, A is associated with the intake camshaft and B with the exhaust camshaft, but this is not universal.

Therefore, for P000B, the manufacturer's service information should be used to identify exactly which camshaft is designated "B".

Bank 1 is the cylinder bank containing cylinder number 1.

On an inline four-cylinder engine, there is generally only one cylinder bank, so Bank 1 is the only bank.

What Does "Slow Response" Mean?

P000B is different from a simple camshaft sensor circuit fault.

The ECM is essentially asking:

"I commanded the camshaft to move to a particular timing position. Did it get there quickly enough?"

If the expected change occurs too slowly, the ECM can store P000B.

The problem can therefore exist even when:

  • The camshaft position sensor has a good electrical signal

  • The engine starts normally

  • There is no obvious mechanical noise

  • The vehicle still drives reasonably well

The important issue is the relationship between commanded camshaft position and actual camshaft position over time.

How Variable Valve Timing Is Involved

P000B is commonly associated with engines equipped with variable valve timing (VVT) or variable camshaft timing.

The basic process is:

  1. The ECM determines the desired camshaft position.

  2. It commands a VVT control valve or oil-control solenoid.

  3. Engine oil is directed through the VVT system.

  4. A camshaft phaser changes the camshaft's angular position.

  5. The camshaft position sensor reports the actual position.

  6. The ECM compares actual position with the commanded position.

If the camshaft takes too long to reach the requested position, P000B may be stored.

This means that an oil-flow problem, VVT actuator problem, solenoid problem, timing problem or incorrect sensor information can potentially produce the same DTC.

Common Causes of P000B

Low or degraded engine oil

VVT systems often depend directly on engine oil pressure and flow.

Oil that is:

  • Too low

  • Extremely dirty

  • Sludged

  • Incorrect in viscosity

  • Contaminated

can interfere with camshaft timing response.

This is one of the first things worth checking.

Restricted oil passages

The VVT system contains relatively small oil passages.

Sludge or debris can restrict oil flow to the camshaft actuator and prevent it from responding quickly.

Faulty VVT oil-control solenoid

The solenoid may become contaminated, stick mechanically or develop an electrical problem.

Even when the solenoid's electrical circuit appears normal, its mechanical operation can still be poor.

Sticking camshaft phaser

The camshaft phaser is the component that changes the camshaft's angular position.

If it becomes worn, contaminated or mechanically stuck, the camshaft may respond slowly or fail to reach the requested position.

Timing chain or belt problem

A stretched timing chain, worn components or incorrect timing can create a discrepancy between the expected and actual camshaft position.

A timing belt that has been installed incorrectly can produce similar problems.

Camshaft position sensor problem

Although P000B is not simply a sensor code, an inaccurate camshaft position signal can make the ECM believe that the camshaft is responding slowly.

Possible causes include:

  • Sensor failure

  • Wiring damage

  • Connector problems

  • Contamination

  • Incorrect sensor installation

  • Damaged reluctor/trigger wheel

Crankshaft position information problem

The ECM normally determines camshaft position in relation to crankshaft position.

Therefore, a problem with the crankshaft position signal can also affect camshaft timing calculations.

Mechanical engine problem

Worn timing components, damaged phaser components or other internal mechanical problems can prevent the camshaft from following the commanded timing.

Symptoms You May Notice

P000B can produce anything from a Check Engine Light with almost no noticeable symptoms to significant engine performance problems.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Rough idle

  • Poor acceleration

  • Reduced engine performance

  • Hesitation

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Difficult starting

  • Engine stalling

  • Reduced low-speed torque

  • Poor high-RPM performance

  • Irregular engine operation

  • Additional camshaft or VVT codes

The severity depends on how far the actual camshaft position deviates from the expected position and under which operating conditions the fault occurs.

A Very Important First Check: Engine Oil

When P000B is present, engine oil should not be overlooked.

Check the oil level first.

Then consider:

  • Oil condition

  • Correct viscosity

  • Correct specification

  • Oil-change history

  • Evidence of sludge

  • Possible fuel dilution

  • Possible coolant contamination

If the oil is severely contaminated or the wrong viscosity has been used, correcting the oil condition may be necessary before performing more complicated VVT diagnosis.

However, changing the oil should not be treated as a guaranteed repair. If the code remains, further diagnosis is required.

How P000B Is Diagnosed

The most useful diagnostic information often comes from live camshaft data, not simply from clearing the code and seeing whether it returns.

Start with a complete scan

Record all stored and pending DTCs.

Pay attention to additional codes involving:

  • Camshaft position

  • Crankshaft position

  • VVT

  • Oil pressure

  • Timing correlation

  • Engine performance

Related codes can change the diagnostic direction considerably.

Check freeze-frame data

Determine when P000B was detected.

For example, note:

  • Engine RPM

  • Engine temperature

  • Load

  • Throttle position

  • Commanded camshaft position

  • Actual camshaft position, if available

A fault that occurs only during a particular RPM range may point toward a different problem than one that occurs immediately after startup.

Compare commanded and actual camshaft position

This is one of the most important tests.

If the ECM commands a camshaft movement but the actual position changes very slowly, the problem may be hydraulic or mechanical.

If the actual position suddenly jumps or produces implausible readings, the sensor or its signal may deserve more attention.

Test the VVT Solenoid

The VVT control solenoid should be checked according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Depending on the vehicle, diagnosis may include:

  • Electrical resistance

  • Power supply

  • Control signal

  • Connector condition

  • Solenoid movement

  • Oil passage condition

  • Actuator testing with a diagnostic scan tool

A solenoid can have acceptable electrical resistance and still be mechanically stuck.

Therefore, an electrical resistance test alone does not prove that the VVT solenoid is functioning correctly.

Check Engine Oil Pressure When Necessary

If the VVT system depends on engine oil pressure, low oil pressure can cause slow camshaft response.

This is particularly important if there are other symptoms such as:

  • Hydraulic lifter noise

  • Low oil-pressure warnings

  • Timing-chain noise

  • VVT codes on multiple camshafts

Where appropriate, actual oil pressure should be measured with a suitable mechanical gauge and compared with the manufacturer's specifications.

Do not assume that normal oil level automatically means normal oil pressure.

Could the Timing Chain Be the Problem?

Yes, but the presence of P000B does not automatically prove that the timing chain is bad.

A stretched chain or worn timing components can alter the relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft.

Other signs may include:

  • Rattling during startup

  • Multiple cam/crank correlation codes

  • Incorrect camshaft timing

  • Poor starting

  • Rough running

  • Persistent timing-related faults

If mechanical timing is suspected, the engine's timing should be checked using the manufacturer's procedure rather than replacing VVT components randomly.

Does P000B Mean the Camshaft Sensor Is Bad?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most common diagnostic mistakes with camshaft-related DTCs.

The camshaft position sensor provides information to the ECM, but P000B describes slow camshaft position response.

The sensor may be reporting perfectly accurate information about a camshaft that is genuinely moving too slowly.

For example:

A VVT solenoid becomes restricted → oil flow is reduced → the camshaft phaser moves slowly → the sensor correctly reports the slow movement → ECM detects the delayed response → P000B is stored.

In this situation, replacing the sensor would not solve the problem.

Can Low Oil Cause P000B?

Yes.

Low oil level can reduce the effectiveness of hydraulically controlled VVT systems.

However, low oil level is only one possible cause.

If the oil level is correct, the next steps may involve checking oil condition, oil pressure, VVT solenoid operation, oil passages, phaser operation and mechanical timing.

Can the Wrong Oil Cause P000B?

Potentially, yes.

Many VVT systems are sensitive to oil viscosity and specification.

Using an oil that is significantly different from the manufacturer's requirement can affect hydraulic response, particularly during cold starts or at certain engine speeds.

The correct oil specification should always be taken from the vehicle manufacturer's documentation.

Does P000B Mean the Engine Timing Has Jumped?

No.

A jumped timing chain or belt can cause camshaft timing problems, but P000B specifically indicates that the ECM detected a slow response.

A VVT solenoid, oil-flow problem or camshaft phaser can produce the code without the basic mechanical timing having jumped.

If there are symptoms of incorrect mechanical timing, however, the timing system should be checked rather than assuming the problem is purely electronic.

Is P000B Serious?

The seriousness depends on the underlying cause.

If the engine is running normally and the only symptom is a steady Check Engine Light, the vehicle may still be driveable for a short period.

But P000B should not be ignored.

A VVT problem can affect:

  • Engine performance

  • Fuel consumption

  • Emissions

  • Combustion stability

And if the underlying problem is mechanical—such as a failing timing component—continued operation could potentially make the problem worse.

If the engine develops severe rattling, difficult starting, stalling, major power loss or abnormal engine noise, prompt diagnosis is recommended.

The Best Way to Think About P000B

P000B is essentially a timing-response problem.

The ECM expected the Bank 1 "B" camshaft to change position within a certain period, but the actual response was too slow.

That means diagnosis should move through the entire system:

Engine oil → oil pressure/flow → VVT solenoid → camshaft phaser → cam/crank signals → mechanical timing

rather than jumping directly to the camshaft sensor or replacing the complete VVT system.

The code tells you what the ECM observed. It does not, by itself, tell you which component caused it.
