P0092 Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit High
A vehicle can have normal fuel pressure one moment and still store P0092 a short time later. This is because the code does not simply say that fuel pressure is too high. It points to a problem with the electrical control circuit for Fuel Pressure Regulator 1, where the engine control module has detected a signal or circuit condition that is higher than the expected range.
That distinction is important.
P0092 is primarily a control-circuit code. Although the fuel pressure regulator ultimately affects fuel pressure, the word “High” in this DTC refers to the electrical control circuit rather than automatically meaning that the fuel rail pressure itself is excessive.
The exact design of the regulator and its control strategy varies between vehicles. Some systems use a regulator on the high-pressure pump, while others use a fuel metering or pressure-control valve on a different part of the fuel system.

A previous repair, aftermarket modification, engine work or wiring harness damage can alter the regulator control circuit.
A wire that has been connected to the wrong circuit can produce a high-control condition even though the regulator itself is perfectly functional.
Faulty fuel pressure regulator
The regulator may have an internal electrical failure, shorted winding or another internal problem that changes the electrical behavior of the circuit.
However, the regulator should not be replaced solely because P0092 is present.
Corroded or damaged connector
Moisture, corrosion, loose terminals and poor terminal tension can change the electrical characteristics of the control circuit.
A connector may look clean externally while still having a poor electrical connection internally.
ECM control-driver fault
The ECM contains electronic drivers that control certain actuators. A damaged driver can produce an abnormal control signal.
This is possible, but it should generally be considered after the wiring, connector and regulator have been properly tested.
Power or ground problems
Poor electrical supply, ground problems or system-voltage abnormalities can interfere with regulator control.

The fastest diagnosis is not necessarily replacing the regulator.

A fuel pressure system can have excessive pressure because of a mechanical regulator problem, restricted return path or another hydraulic issue.
P0092, however, specifically points toward a high electrical condition in the regulator control circuit.
That distinction changes the diagnostic approach.
If a technician immediately replaces a pressure sensor or high-pressure pump without checking the regulator's electrical circuit, an important part of the fault can be missed.
Could the Fuel Pressure Sensor Cause P0092?
It can contribute to confusing symptoms, but it should not automatically be blamed for P0092.
The pressure sensor tells the ECM what pressure is actually present. The regulator is the device being electrically controlled.
A faulty pressure sensor may produce implausible pressure feedback and cause other fuel-pressure-related DTCs.
However, a dedicated P0092 should lead the diagnosis toward the Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 control circuit first, while using pressure-sensor data to determine whether the fuel system is responding correctly.

P0092 is different from several nearby fuel-system DTCs.
P0090 – Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit
This is a general circuit malfunction. P0092 specifically indicates a high circuit condition.
P0091 – Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit Low
This indicates that the control circuit is electrically lower than expected.
P0093 – Fuel System Leak Detected – Large Leak
P0093 concerns a fuel-system pressure/delivery condition interpreted as a large leak or significant pressure loss. It is not simply another description of P0092.
P0094 – Fuel System Leak Detected – Small Leak
This indicates a smaller pressure/delivery loss condition and has a different diagnostic direction.
P0087 – Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low
P0087 focuses on insufficient fuel pressure. P0092 focuses on the electrical control circuit of Fuel Pressure Regulator 1.
These codes can occur together, and when they do, they should be diagnosed as a system rather than independently replacing the component named by each code.
What Happens If You Keep Driving With P0092?
The risk depends on how the fuel system is behaving.
If the engine is running normally and the fault is intermittent, the vehicle may continue to operate for some time.
However, fuel-pressure control problems can become unpredictable.

Fuel pressure regulation works on the same basic principle.
This is why diagnosing P0092 requires looking at both sides of the system: the electrical command and the resulting fuel pressure.
The Most Important Diagnostic Point
P0092 should be approached as an electrical control problem that can create a fuel-pressure problem, rather than simply as a high-pressure fuel fault.
Start with the complete scan, freeze-frame information and wiring diagram. Identify Fuel Pressure Regulator 1, inspect its connector and harness, test the control circuit for unwanted voltage or shorts, and then compare commanded fuel pressure with actual pressure.
Only after those checks should the regulator, pressure sensor, pump or ECM be considered for replacement.
A correct diagnosis can prevent an unnecessarily expensive fuel-system repair—especially on high-pressure diesel and gasoline direct-injection systems where replacing major components without testing can become costly very quickly.
For high-pressure fuel systems, follow the manufacturer's safety procedures and never loosen high-pressure fuel lines while the system is running or pressurized.
