P0343 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High Input (Bank 1)

P0343 means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an abnormally high electrical signal in the Camshaft Position Sensor “A” circuit on Bank 1.

The important word in this code is “High.” It refers to the electrical signal seen by the ECM, not to high engine speed, high camshaft RPM, advanced camshaft timing, or excessive camshaft position.

P0343 is therefore primarily an electrical circuit diagnosis. The camshaft sensor itself may be faulty, but a short to voltage, wiring problem, connector fault, incorrect sensor supply, or another electrical issue can produce exactly the same code.

What Does Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Do?

The camshaft position sensor tells the ECM where the camshaft is in relation to engine rotation.

The ECM uses this information for:

  • Fuel injection timing

  • Ignition timing

  • Cylinder identification

  • Engine synchronization

  • Variable valve timing control

One common electrical possibility is a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or another powered circuit.

However, that is only one possibility.

Common Causes of P0343

Faulty camshaft position sensor

An internally damaged sensor can produce an incorrect output signal. Electronic failure may cause the output to remain high or behave outside the expected voltage range.

Heat and vibration can make this problem intermittent.

Signal wire shorted to voltage

This is one of the important possibilities with a circuit-high code.

If the camshaft sensor signal wire contacts a battery-voltage circuit, the ECM may see a voltage much higher than expected.

The short can occur because of:

  • Damaged insulation

  • Chafed wiring

  • Incorrect previous repair

  • Harness movement

  • Melted insulation near the exhaust

  • Wiring trapped against another component

Damaged connector

A connector can cause P0343 through corrosion, moisture, damaged terminals, poor terminal tension, or incorrect pin contact.

The sensor itself may be perfectly good.

Incorrect sensor power supply

Some camshaft sensors use a regulated reference voltage supplied by the ECM, while others use different electrical architectures.

If an incorrect voltage is present on the sensor circuit, the resulting signal can cause a high-input condition.

Poor ground

A sensor with a poor or interrupted ground can produce abnormal electrical behavior.

The exact effect depends on the sensor design, so the ground circuit should be tested according to the wiring diagram rather than assuming a particular voltage.

Incorrect or incompatible sensor

Installing the wrong sensor can also create unexpected signal behavior.

Two sensors may physically fit the same location while having different electrical characteristics or pin configurations.

Damaged wiring near the sensor

Camshaft sensor wiring frequently passes through areas exposed to engine heat, oil, vibration and movement.

A harness can look acceptable from above while having internal damage or an intermittent connection.

Electrical interference

A damaged sensor harness routed alongside ignition, injector, alternator, or other electrically noisy circuits can sometimes produce signal problems.

This is particularly relevant when the fault appears intermittently.

Trigger/reluctor problem

The camshaft sensor reads a physical target such as a reluctor, trigger wheel, or tone pattern.

Replacing the ECM simply because P0343 is present is poor diagnostic practice.

Symptoms You May Notice

P0343 can produce very different symptoms depending on how the engine's control system responds to the missing or abnormal camshaft information.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Extended cranking

  • Intermittent no-start

Some vehicles may continue driving almost normally.

Why Can the Car Still Run With P0343?

The crankshaft position signal remains available in many cases.

If the ECM loses reliable camshaft information but still has a valid crankshaft signal, it may use a fallback strategy.

The engine can therefore continue running, although starting may take longer and fuel injection or ignition control may not operate exactly as intended.

This explains why a vehicle with P0343 can sometimes appear completely normal during ordinary driving.

The fault may become more noticeable during starting, acceleration, or particular engine temperatures.

How to Diagnose P0343 Correctly

The best diagnosis begins by determining why the ECM sees a high signal, rather than immediately replacing the sensor.

1. Scan all codes

Check stored, pending and history codes.

Look for additional:

  • Camshaft codes

  • Crankshaft codes

  • VVT codes

  • Cam/crank correlation codes

  • Low-voltage codes

  • Communication codes

The combination of codes can provide much more information than P0343 alone.

Freeze-frame data can also show engine speed, temperature, battery voltage and operating conditions when the fault occurred.

2. Identify Sensor A

Confirm exactly which physical sensor is Sensor A for that particular engine.

Do not rely solely on generic diagrams because sensor naming can vary between manufacturers.

3. Inspect the connector and harness

Look carefully for:

  • Corrosion

  • Oil contamination

  • Water intrusion

  • Bent pins

  • Loose terminals

  • Damaged locking tabs

  • Broken wires

  • Chafed insulation

  • Melted wiring

  • Previous repair work

Pay particular attention to areas where the harness can rub against the engine or brackets.

4. Verify the sensor power and ground

Determine the sensor type and follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram.

Check the supply voltage and ground under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.

A simple resistance measurement is not always enough to prove that a ground or power circuit is healthy.

5. Check the signal wire for a short to voltage

Because P0343 is a circuit-high code, this is a particularly important test.

With the circuit isolated as required by the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, check whether the signal wire is unintentionally connected to a power source.

Also check for unwanted continuity to other circuits.

A multimeter can provide useful information, but an oscilloscope is often much more valuable for a camshaft signal.

The waveform can show whether the sensor is actually switching as expected or whether the signal is stuck high, distorted, intermittent, or missing.

Monitoring the signal while moving the harness can also reveal intermittent wiring faults.

7. Compare camshaft and crankshaft signals

When necessary, comparing both waveforms can help determine whether the problem is electrical or mechanical.

A clean electrical signal with incorrect synchronization may point toward timing, VVT, or trigger-target problems rather than a simple sensor failure.

8. Inspect the trigger target

If the sensor, wiring and electrical supply test correctly, inspect the camshaft trigger mechanism.

A damaged or incorrectly positioned target can affect the signal even when the electrical circuit itself is healthy.

9. Check mechanical timing when indicated

Mechanical timing should be investigated when there are additional symptoms or codes suggesting a synchronization problem.

A stretched or jumped timing chain, incorrectly installed belt, or VVT problem can affect camshaft position.

But P0343 alone does not prove that the timing chain has failed.

Can a Bad Camshaft Sensor Cause P0343?

Yes, it can.

But replacing the sensor should not be the first assumption.

For example, if the sensor signal wire is shorted to battery voltage, installing a new sensor will not repair the problem.

The new sensor will simply be connected to the same faulty circuit.

A proper diagnosis determines whether the abnormal voltage originates from the sensor itself or somewhere else in the circuit.

Can Wiring Cause P0343?

Yes, and wiring should be taken seriously with this code.

A signal wire shorted to voltage is a particularly logical possibility because the ECM is reporting a high input.

However, wiring can also create intermittent faults through broken conductors, poor terminals, corrosion and excessive resistance.

A visual inspection alone may not find these problems.

Can a Timing Chain Cause P0343?

A timing problem can cause camshaft-related diagnostic codes, but it is not the first thing to assume from P0343.

If the timing chain has stretched or jumped, the camshaft can become incorrectly synchronized with the crankshaft.

Usually, additional evidence helps support this diagnosis, such as:

  • Cam/crank correlation codes

  • Difficult starting

  • Poor engine performance

  • Abnormal timing-chain noise

  • Multiple camshaft-related faults

  • Incorrect camshaft timing in live data

If the electrical signal itself is stuck high, however, the electrical circuit should be investigated before dismantling the timing system.

Can Low Battery Voltage Cause P0343?

Low battery voltage is not what the “high input” portion of P0343 directly describes.

Nevertheless, unstable system voltage can cause unusual sensor and ECM behavior, particularly during cranking.

If the vehicle has several unrelated electrical codes at the same time, checking the battery, charging system and engine grounds is sensible.

But a normal battery does not eliminate a high signal caused by a shorted sensor circuit.

Can VVT Problems Cause P0343?

VVT problems can influence camshaft position and can produce other camshaft-related faults.

For example, a stuck cam phaser or oil-control problem can cause the actual camshaft position to differ from the commanded position.

However, P0343 specifically describes a high electrical input, so an electrical fault should receive priority when diagnosing this code.

If the electrical signal is correct but the camshaft position is mechanically incorrect, then VVT or mechanical timing becomes much more relevant.

P0343 vs P0342 and P0341

These codes provide different clues.

P0341 generally indicates a Camshaft Position Sensor “A” circuit range/performance problem on Bank 1.

P0342 generally indicates a low input from that circuit.

P0343 indicates a high input.

The difference between low and high is important because it changes the electrical direction of the diagnosis.

With P0343, the technician should pay particular attention to the possibility of excessive voltage on the signal circuit, including a short to a power source.

What Should Be Replaced?

There is no universal component that should be replaced simply because P0343 is stored.

The correct repair depends on the test results.

If the camshaft sensor has failed internally, replace the sensor.

If the connector is damaged, repair or replace the connector.

If the signal wire is shorted to voltage, repair the harness.

If the sensor's power or ground is missing, repair that circuit.

If the trigger target is damaged, repair the mechanical cause.

If mechanical timing is incorrect, repair the timing system.

The ECM should be considered only after all external possibilities have been eliminated.

Final Diagnostic Approach

P0343 should be approached as an electrical high-input problem in the Camshaft Position Sensor “A” circuit on Bank 1.

A sensible diagnostic path is:

Identify Sensor A → inspect the connector and wiring → verify power and ground → check the signal circuit for a short to voltage → observe the sensor waveform → compare camshaft and crankshaft signals when necessary → inspect the trigger target → investigate VVT/mechanical timing if the evidence points there → consider the ECM last.

The key point is simple: P0343 tells you that the ECM is seeing an excessively high electrical signal from the specified camshaft sensor circuit. It does not automatically mean that the camshaft sensor itself needs to be replaced.
