P0465 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Purge Flow Sensor Circuit Malfunction
The P0465 diagnostic trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a problem with the EVAP purge flow sensor circuit.
The EVAP system is responsible for capturing fuel vapors from the fuel tank and sending them into the engine to be burned instead of allowing them to escape into the atmosphere. To control this process correctly, the vehicle needs reliable information about what is happening during purge operation.

With P0465, the fault is broader. The ECM knows there is a problem with the circuit or its operation, but the code itself does not specify exactly what type of electrical abnormality was detected.
Common causes of P0465
Faulty purge flow sensor
The sensor may have an internal electrical or electronic failure. A sensor can also become contaminated or damaged depending on its location and the design of the EVAP system.
Damaged wiring
A broken, chafed or partially damaged wire can interrupt the sensor signal.
Wiring problems are particularly important because EVAP components are often located in areas exposed to moisture, road debris, heat and vibration.

A connector may appear connected while still having a poor electrical connection.

How to diagnose P0465 correctly
A proper diagnosis should begin with the entire EVAP system rather than immediately replacing a sensor.
Start by scanning for additional codes
P0465 should be considered together with any other stored or pending DTCs.
Other EVAP codes may reveal whether the problem is related to:

A sensor that produces a stable but incorrect signal requires a different diagnosis from a sensor whose signal disappears completely.
Test the purge valve
The purge valve should also be checked.
With a suitable scan tool, the technician may command the valve on and off while observing the EVAP data.
Depending on the vehicle, additional tests can determine whether the valve:

Can P0465 cause hard starting after refueling?
It can, depending on what is actually causing the EVAP problem.
If the purge valve is leaking or the purge system is not being controlled correctly, excessive fuel vapor can enter the intake during or shortly after refueling.

The purge valve controls vapor flow.
The purge-flow sensor or related EVAP monitoring system provides information about what is happening during that flow.
They perform different jobs.
A fault in one can sometimes affect the diagnostic information associated with the other, which is why a complete EVAP diagnosis is more useful than replacing the first component mentioned in the code description.
What happens if you continue driving?
In most cases, P0465 does not immediately prevent the vehicle from being driven.
If the engine is running normally and there is no fuel leak or strong fuel odor, the vehicle may remain perfectly driveable.
However, the fault should not be ignored indefinitely.

P0465 is broader and does not specify that particular type of failure.
P0465 vs P0467
P0467 indicates a low input from the EVAP purge-flow sensor circuit.
That generally points toward an abnormally low electrical signal.
P0465 does not specifically identify the signal as low. It simply indicates a general circuit malfunction.
P0465 vs P0468
P0468 indicates a high input from the EVAP purge-flow sensor circuit.
That means the ECM has detected an abnormally high electrical signal or related high-input condition.
P0465 is less specific.
P0465 vs P0469
These two codes are especially easy to confuse.
P0465: General purge-flow sensor circuit malfunction.
P0469: Intermittent purge-flow sensor circuit.
If the signal repeatedly cuts out or becomes erratic, P0469 provides that additional clue.
If the ECM detects a problem but does not classify it specifically as intermittent, low, high or range/performance, P0465 may be stored.
The best way to approach P0465
P0465 should be treated as an EVAP diagnostic starting point, not as a direct instruction to replace a sensor.
A sensible diagnostic path is:
Scan all codes → examine freeze-frame data → identify the vehicle's EVAP design → inspect wiring and connectors → verify sensor power/reference/ground → monitor live data → test purge valve → inspect EVAP hoses and canister → verify the system after repair.
The final repair could be as simple as repairing a damaged wire or connector. In another vehicle it could involve the purge-flow sensor, purge valve, pressure sensor, EVAP plumbing or another component.
Once the repair is made, the most convincing confirmation is not merely that the code has been erased. The EVAP system should be monitored under the conditions in which the ECM performs its purge checks, and the sensor data should remain stable and plausible.
That is what separates a proper P0465 diagnosis from simply replacing EVAP parts until the Check Engine Light goes out.
