U0109 Lost Communication With Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM)

The diagnostic trouble code U0109 – Lost Communication With Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) means that one of the vehicle’s control modules has stopped receiving the expected messages from the Fuel Pump Control Module over the vehicle communication network.

This is not simply a “fuel pump failure” code. The FPCM and the engine control module (ECM/PCM) communicate electronically, usually through a CAN network, to coordinate fuel-pump operation and monitor fuel-system conditions. The vehicle may start normally on one occasion and fail to start on another.

  • Loose connector terminals

  • Corroded terminals

  • Water intrusion

  • Wiring that moves with vibration

  • Heat-sensitive electrical faults

  • Internal FPCM electronic failure

Freeze-frame information and the conditions under which the code was recorded can be very useful.

A Better Way to Diagnose U0109

A systematic diagnosis is more effective than replacing parts based solely on the DTC.

Start by scanning every module

Do not scan only the ECM/PCM.

A complete vehicle scan can reveal whether other modules have also lost communication with the FPCM.

For example, if several modules report that the FPCM is unavailable, the problem may be a common power supply, ground, network circuit, or gateway issue.

If only one module reports U0109 while the FPCM communicates normally with a diagnostic scanner, the situation may be different.

Check battery and charging voltage

Verify the vehicle's electrical system before performing complicated network diagnosis.

A weak battery or unstable supply can create communication faults that look like module failures.

Do not rely solely on a single voltage reading with the engine off. The vehicle may need to be checked during cranking and under operating conditions according to the manufacturer's procedures.

Check FPCM fuses

Locate all fuses supplying the FPCM using the vehicle-specific wiring diagram.

Do not assume that one visible fuse is the only relevant supply.

Some systems have separate circuits for module power, pump power, ignition supply, or related control components.

Check the FPCM power and ground

With the correct wiring diagram, verify that the module receives the required power and has a good ground.

Check Commanded and Actual Fuel Pressure

If the vehicle starts and runs, fuel-pressure data can provide additional evidence.

  • Desired fuel pressure

  • Actual fuel pressure

  • Fuel-pump command

  • Pump duty cycle

  • FPCM status

  • Fuel pressure sensor data

A fuel-pressure problem does not automatically prove that the FPCM is defective.

For example, a weak pump, restricted fuel filter, faulty pressure sensor, wiring problem, or fuel-system restriction can produce abnormal pressure even when the FPCM is functioning correctly.

U0109 With Other Trouble Codes

U0109 should not always be diagnosed in isolation.

If the vehicle has codes for:

  • CAN communication

  • Multiple lost-communication faults

  • Fuel pressure

  • Fuel pump control

  • Fuel pressure sensor

  • Engine control module communication

the complete combination can be much more informative than U0109 alone.

A useful diagnostic principle is to determine which fault appeared first.

For example, if several modules simultaneously report communication failures immediately after a battery-voltage problem, the communication codes may be consequences rather than separate component failures.

Can U0109 Prevent the Engine From Starting?

Yes.

On some vehicles, loss of communication with the FPCM can prevent the fuel system from operating correctly.

If the FPCM does not receive or execute the required commands, fuel-pump operation may not produce the pressure necessary for starting.

However, the exact behavior is manufacturer-specific.

Is U0109 Serious?

The seriousness depends on how the vehicle is behaving.

A vehicle that unexpectedly loses fuel delivery while driving can lose engine power.

Should You Replace the Fuel Pump?

Not based on U0109 alone.

The code identifies a communication problem involving the Fuel Pump Control Module. It does not prove that the fuel pump itself has failed.

A proper diagnosis should establish whether:

  1. The FPCM has correct power.

  2. The FPCM has a reliable ground.

  3. The communication network is functioning correctly.

  4. The FPCM connector and wiring are intact.

  5. The FPCM can communicate with the diagnostic tool.

  6. The fuel pump receives the appropriate control.

  7. Fuel pressure matches the required values.

Only after these checks should component replacement be considered.

When the FPCM Is Actually the Problem

An FPCM becomes a much stronger suspect when:

  • Power supply is correct.

  • Ground is correct.

  • CAN wiring is correct.

  • Connectors are in good condition.

  • No external network fault is found.

  • The module remains inaccessible to the scan tool.

  • Manufacturer-specific tests identify an internal module failure.

At that point, replacement or programming of the FPCM may be required.

Some vehicles require the replacement module to be programmed, configured, or initialized before the vehicle operates correctly.

Installing a physically compatible module does not necessarily mean the vehicle will accept it.

Important Safety Considerations

Fuel-system diagnosis requires caution.

Fuel can be highly flammable, and some vehicles use fuel systems operating at significant pressure.

Before disconnecting fuel-system components, follow the manufacturer's procedure for:

  • Fuel-pressure relief

  • Battery disconnection where required

  • Electrical testing

  • Fuel-line disconnection

  • Module replacement

  • Pump replacement

  • High-pressure fuel systems

Never assume that a fuel system is depressurized simply because the engine is switched off.

What U0109 Really Tells You

U0109 is best understood as a communication fault involving the Fuel Pump Control Module, not as a direct diagnosis of the fuel pump.

The most productive diagnostic path is to establish whether the FPCM is alive, powered correctly, grounded correctly, and connected to the vehicle network.

From there, the investigation can move toward CAN wiring, connectors, network interference, the FPCM itself, and finally the fuel-pump control and fuel-pressure system.

A failed fuel pump can certainly create fuel-related symptoms, but U0109 specifically points your attention toward the electronic communication and control side of the fuel-delivery system.
