Comparing LPG With Diesel and Gasoline Vehicles

LPG, gasoline, and diesel each have their own strengths and weaknesses. The right choice depends less on the name of the fuel and more on how the vehicle is used, how many kilometers it covers each year, and what kind of maintenance costs the owner is willing to accept.

LPG is particularly interesting because it allows many gasoline-powered vehicles to operate on a second fuel at a lower running cost. Diesel, on the other hand, has traditionally been favored for long-distance driving and high annual mileage, while gasoline remains popular because of its smooth operation, simpler short-distance use, and broad compatibility with LPG conversions.

The basic difference between LPG, gasoline, and diesel

Gasoline engines use spark ignition. LPG vehicles generally use the same basic gasoline engine but add a separate fuel system that allows the engine to run on LPG.

Diesel engines work differently. Diesel fuel is ignited by the high temperature created by compressing air inside the cylinder rather than by a conventional spark plug.

This distinction is important because LPG is not really a separate engine technology in most passenger cars. It is primarily an alternative fuel used with a gasoline-type engine.

Fuel consumption: Which one uses less fuel?

Fuel consumption cannot be compared simply by looking at liters per 100 kilometers.

LPG contains less energy per liter than gasoline, so an LPG vehicle will generally consume more liters of LPG than gasoline for the same distance.

Is diesel better for long-distance driving?

LPG's biggest advantage over gasoline

The main attraction of LPG is its potential to reduce the running cost of a gasoline-powered vehicle.

If the engine is compatible with LPG and the conversion system is properly installed and calibrated, the vehicle can operate on both gasoline and LPG.

This gives the driver additional flexibility.

The vehicle can:

  • Start on gasoline

  • Switch to LPG when operating conditions are suitable

  • Return to gasoline when necessary

  • Continue driving on gasoline if the LPG system develops a problem

Why do people still choose gasoline?

  • Electrical connections

Diesel vehicles can have a different and sometimes more complex group of components.

Depending on the vehicle, these may include:

  • DPF

  • EGR

  • Turbocharger

  • High-pressure fuel pump

  • Common-rail injectors

  • SCR system

  • AdBlue system

Not every diesel vehicle has all of these components, but modern diesel technology can involve more expensive emissions and fuel-system components when repairs are required.

Does LPG wear out the engine faster?

There is no universal answer.

The effect of LPG on engine durability depends on factors such as:

  • Engine design

  • Valve and valve-seat construction

  • LPG calibration

  • Air-fuel mixture

  • Engine operating temperature

  • Driving style

  • Maintenance quality

Some engines are highly suitable for LPG, while others require more attention to valve and valve-seat durability during long-term LPG operation.

This is why engine compatibility should be investigated before an LPG conversion.

Why is diesel maintenance different?

Modern diesel engines use high-pressure fuel systems and sophisticated emissions-control technologies.

Depending on the vehicle, the engine may include a DPF, EGR, turbocharger, high-pressure fuel system, SCR system and AdBlue.

A failure in one of these systems can sometimes result in a significant repair bill.

This does not mean that every diesel vehicle is expensive to maintain. However, when buying a used diesel vehicle, fuel economy should not be the only consideration.

The condition of the emissions system, turbocharger, injectors and high-pressure fuel system can be just as important.

LPG, gasoline and diesel emissions

There is no universal rule that makes one of these fuels the cleanest in every situation.

LPG can offer advantages over gasoline in certain emissions categories when used in a properly calibrated engine. Particulate emissions can be particularly favorable because LPG combustion generally produces very little soot compared with conventional diesel combustion.

Gasoline emissions depend heavily on engine technology and injection type.

Modern diesel engines, meanwhile, use DPF, EGR and SCR systems to control particulate matter and NOx emissions.

These systems must remain functional.

A modern diesel vehicle with a properly functioning emissions system should not be compared with a vehicle whose DPF or other emissions equipment has been removed or disabled.

Is LPG better for the environment?

LPG can provide environmental advantages in some applications, but it should not be described as a zero-emission or completely clean fuel.

LPG is still a fossil fuel and produces CO₂ when burned.

However, depending on the engine and operating conditions, LPG can offer:

  • Lower particulate formation

  • Potentially lower CO₂ emissions than some gasoline applications

  • Low sulfur content

  • Lower levels of certain pollutants compared with conventional gasoline or older diesel technologies

The real environmental impact depends on fuel consumption, engine technology, vehicle condition and the full fuel production and distribution chain.

Safety comparison

Gasoline, diesel and LPG all have different safety characteristics.

Gasoline is highly volatile and produces flammable vapors.

Diesel has much lower volatility and therefore behaves differently in the event of a spill.

LPG is stored under pressure and can accumulate near ground level if it leaks into an enclosed area because it is generally heavier than air.

However, properly manufactured LPG tanks, multivalves and fuel-system components are specifically designed to manage these risks.

The condition of the fuel system is therefore just as important as the characteristics of the fuel itself.

Is an LPG conversion always worthwhile?

Not necessarily.

The economic benefit of LPG depends heavily on annual mileage.

For a vehicle that covers only a few thousand kilometers per year, the cost of the conversion may take a long time to recover.

For a vehicle that travels many kilometers every year, the fuel savings can make the conversion considerably more attractive.

Engine compatibility is also critical.

A conversion should not be chosen simply because LPG is cheaper. The engine, LPG kit, installation quality and expected annual mileage should all be considered.

Which one is cheaper overall?

There is no single answer for every driver.

A gasoline vehicle can be attractive for someone who drives relatively little and values simplicity and smooth operation.

An LPG-powered gasoline vehicle can be highly economical for someone who has a compatible engine and covers enough kilometers each year to benefit from the lower fuel cost.

A diesel vehicle can remain an excellent choice for drivers who cover high annual mileage, spend a lot of time on highways or need strong low-speed torque.

The purchase price and long-term maintenance risk should also be included in the calculation.

The best fuel depends on how you drive

The choice between LPG, gasoline and diesel should not be based solely on the price of a liter of fuel.

Consider:

How many kilometers do you drive each year?

Is most of your driving in the city or on the highway?

Do you mostly make short trips or long journeys?

How important are low fuel costs to you?

Is the engine suitable for LPG?

How much can you comfortably spend on maintenance and repairs?

For a high-mileage driver with a suitable gasoline engine, LPG can provide an excellent balance between operating cost and practicality. For long-distance drivers, diesel can still be highly competitive. For low-mileage drivers who want simple and smooth operation, gasoline may remain the most convenient choice.

Ultimately, the best option is not necessarily the fuel with the lowest consumption figure. It is the combination of fuel cost, vehicle condition, maintenance requirements, annual mileage and driving conditions that determines the real cost of owning and operating the vehicle.
