P0462 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Input
The P0462 trouble code means the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an electrically low signal from the fuel level sensor circuit.
The most important word in this definition is “Low.”
Here, “Low Input” primarily describes the electrical signal received by the control module. It does not automatically mean that the fuel tank is nearly empty.
A vehicle can have plenty of fuel in the tank and still set P0462 if the fuel-level sensor circuit is producing a signal lower than the ECM expects.
This distinction is important because replacing the fuel pump or adding fuel without testing the circuit can completely miss the actual problem.

Can a nearly empty tank cause P0462?
A genuinely low fuel level is not, by itself, normally the meaning of P0462.
The ECM is detecting an electrical input below its expected range.
A very low fuel level can certainly produce a low fuel-level reading, but that should be a normal operating condition rather than a circuit fault.
The distinction becomes important when the scan tool reports a very low fuel level while the tank is actually half full or nearly full.
That discrepancy strongly suggests that the electrical signal or its interpretation needs to be investigated.
Can P0462 affect EVAP diagnostics?
Yes.
Fuel level is an important parameter for many EVAP diagnostic routines.
The ECM may only perform certain EVAP tests when the fuel level is within a particular range because temperature, vapor volume and tank pressure are affected by the amount of fuel in the tank.
If the ECM cannot trust the fuel-level information, some EVAP monitors may be prevented from running or may produce additional diagnostic problems.
This does not necessarily mean that the EVAP system itself is defective.
The incorrect fuel-level signal can simply prevent the ECM from performing its normal diagnostic strategy.
P0462 vs P0461, P0463 and P0464
These codes describe different fuel-level sensor signal conditions.
P0461 – Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
The signal is present, but the ECM considers its value or behavior implausible.
P0462 – Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Input
The electrical input is lower than the expected range.
P0463 – Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input
The electrical input is higher than the expected range.
P0464 – Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Intermittent
The signal becomes unstable, disappears, or behaves abnormally intermittently.
This makes P0462 particularly useful for directing the initial diagnosis toward the electrical signal, ground, wiring and sensor output.

It does not automatically mean that the fuel tank is empty, and it does not automatically mean that the fuel pump has failed.
The most effective diagnosis is to compare the actual fuel level with the scan-tool reading, determine which module processes the sender signal, inspect the fuel-tank connector and wiring, verify the sensor's power/reference and ground where applicable, and test the sender according to the manufacturer's specifications.
If the signal is being pulled low by a shorted wire or poor circuit connection, replacing the sender will not solve the problem. Conversely, if the wiring and electrical supply are correct but the sender produces an incorrect low signal throughout its operating range, the sender becomes the primary suspect.
