P0233 Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit Intermittent

A fuel pump can work perfectly for several minutes, hours, or even days and still have an electrical problem.

That is what makes P0233 particularly frustrating to diagnose.

The code does not simply mean “the fuel pump is bad.” It means the engine control module has detected an intermittent electrical problem in the secondary circuit associated with the fuel pump.

The word “intermittent” is the key.

The circuit may operate normally most of the time, then briefly lose its expected electrical condition. The fault may disappear before the vehicle reaches the workshop, leaving no obvious problem during a basic inspection.

What P0233 Is Actually Telling You

The fuel pump circuit normally contains more than just a pump.

Depending on the vehicle, the system may involve:

  • Fuel pump relay

  • Fuel pump fuse

  • Fuel pump control module

  • Engine control module

  • Fuel pump

  • Pump power circuit

  • Pump ground circuit

  • Control or command wiring

  • Fuel pressure feedback

  • Electrical connectors

  • Wiring harness

The exact architecture varies considerably between manufacturers.

Some vehicles use a conventional relay to switch the pump on and off. Others use a dedicated fuel pump driver or control module that varies pump voltage or duty cycle.

Therefore, “secondary circuit” does not identify one universal wire or one specific component.

The manufacturer's wiring diagram is needed to determine exactly what the ECM is monitoring.

Why Does the Code Say “Intermittent”?

Imagine the fuel pump circuit normally operating at a particular voltage and current.

While driving over a rough road, the wiring harness moves slightly.

A partially broken wire makes contact and then loses contact.

The pump may continue running, but the electrical signal momentarily changes.

The ECM detects the abnormal condition.

Then the connection returns to normal.

By the time the vehicle reaches the repair shop, the pump may sound completely normal.

This is a classic intermittent electrical fault.

The Fuel Pump May Not Be the Problem

For example, the pump itself may have normal pressure output, but the connector supplying it may have poor terminal tension.

  • The connector gets hot

  • Current demand increases

  • The vehicle accelerates

  • The fuel pump operates at a higher duty cycle

Replacing the pump without testing the circuit can therefore fail to solve the problem.

Fuel pump electrical connector

A loose, oxidized, corroded, or heat-damaged connector can cause an intermittent connection.

Terminal tension is particularly important.

A connector can look clean while one terminal has lost enough tension to create resistance or intermittent contact.

Damaged wiring

Fuel-pump wiring often runs underneath the vehicle or near the fuel tank.

A conductor can also break internally while the insulation remains intact.

Fuel pump relay

Fuel pump internal electrical fault

The pump motor can also develop an intermittent internal problem.

Worn brushes, commutators, internal connections, or excessive current draw can cause the electrical behavior to change as the pump operates.

ECM or control-side problem

The ECM is possible, but it should normally be considered after the external circuit has been properly tested.

An ECM should not be replaced simply because the code is stored.

A Very Useful Clue: When Does the Problem Occur?

With an intermittent code, when it happens can be more useful than the fact that it happened.

If P0233 appears:

During acceleration

Investigate pump current demand, supply voltage, wiring, ground, and fuel delivery under load.

Over rough roads

Suspect connectors, terminal tension, wiring movement, or a loose ground.

After the vehicle becomes hot

Pay particular attention to the relay, pump, control module, connectors, and heat-damaged wiring.

After refueling

Consider the fuel-pump module connector and wiring around the tank, while also checking for a disturbed connection.

During long drives

The pump may develop an electrical fault as its temperature increases.

Only during starting

Check the pump activation circuit, relay/control module, battery voltage, and pump operation during the initial prime.

These patterns can significantly narrow the diagnosis.

Don't Ignore Fuel Pressure

Although P0233 is fundamentally an electrical/circuit code, fuel pressure should still be checked.

The reason is simple:

An intermittent pump electrical problem can produce an intermittent fuel-delivery problem.

The vehicle might therefore show:

  • Hard starting

  • Stalling

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Engine misfire

  • Loss of power

  • Lean operation on gasoline engines

  • Low rail pressure on systems that use a low-pressure pump as part of the fuel supply

If fuel pressure drops at the exact moment the electrical fault occurs, the two problems may be directly connected.

Check Voltage at the Fuel Pump — Not Just at the Battery

A common mistake is checking battery voltage and concluding that the fuel pump has sufficient power.

That does not prove the pump is receiving the correct voltage.

The correct diagnostic question is:

What voltage is actually reaching the pump while the pump is operating?

The technician should evaluate the relevant supply and ground circuits under operating conditions.

A voltage-drop test is especially useful.

For example, a circuit can show acceptable voltage with almost no load but develop a significant voltage drop once the fuel pump draws current.

That is why a simple continuity test can miss an intermittent or high-resistance connection.

Fuel Pump Current Can Reveal a Lot

If the equipment and vehicle architecture allow it, measuring fuel pump current can provide valuable information.

A healthy pump generally has a characteristic current pattern.

An abnormal current draw can indicate problems such as:

  • Pump wear

  • Mechanical restriction

  • Electrical resistance

  • Internal motor problems

  • Fuel-system restriction

An intermittent change in current synchronized with P0233 can be a strong diagnostic clue.

On some vehicles, however, pump speed is electronically controlled, so the expected current pattern must be interpreted according to manufacturer specifications.

Use the Freeze-Frame Data

When P0233 is stored, the ECM may save operating conditions from the moment the fault was detected.

Useful information may include:

  • Engine RPM

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine load

  • Battery voltage

  • Fuel pressure

  • Fuel trim

  • Engine temperature

  • Pump command

  • Pump duty cycle

  • Other related parameters

Suppose the code was stored during hard acceleration and battery voltage was normal.

That makes a simple low-battery explanation less convincing and shifts attention toward the fuel-pump circuit under high demand.

A Wiggle Test Can Find What a Visual Inspection Cannot

For an intermittent electrical fault, the wiring should sometimes be tested while being carefully moved.

The technician may monitor:

  • Pump voltage

  • Ground voltage drop

  • Control signal

  • Current draw

  • Scan-tool data

while gently manipulating the relevant harness and connectors.

If the signal suddenly changes, the location of the fault may become apparent.

This must be performed carefully. High-current fuel-pump circuits and fuel-system components should not be manipulated carelessly around fuel vapors.

Inspect the Fuel Tank Area Carefully

On many vehicles, the fuel pump is mounted inside or around the fuel tank.

The wiring and connector may therefore be exposed to a difficult environment.

Check for:

  • Moisture intrusion

  • Loose terminals

Electrical power remains, but the pump stops?

The pump itself becomes more suspicious.

This approach is much more effective than simply replacing parts based on the stored DTC.

P0233 vs a Fuel Pressure Problem

These are not the same thing.

A vehicle can have low fuel pressure without P0233.

Likewise, P0233 can exist while fuel pressure remains normal because the electrical interruption was brief.

For example, the circuit may have experienced a very short electrical abnormality that the ECM detected but that was not long enough to stop the pump or noticeably reduce pressure.

Therefore:

P0233 = intermittent electrical/circuit condition

It does not directly mean:

“Fuel pressure is low.”

What About the Fuel Filter?

A restricted fuel filter can certainly cause fuel-delivery problems, but it does not automatically explain P0233.

If the vehicle has both P0233 and symptoms of fuel starvation, the filter and fuel supply should be evaluated.

However, a filter should not be blamed for an electrical circuit fault without supporting evidence.

The same principle applies to the fuel pump.

Could a Weak Battery Cause P0233?

Low system voltage can interfere with fuel-pump operation, especially during starting or when electrical loads are high.

But battery voltage should be measured rather than assumed to be the cause.

Check:

  • Battery condition

  • Charging voltage

  • Voltage during cranking

  • Voltage at the pump

  • Voltage drop on the supply side

  • Voltage drop on the ground side

A charging-system problem can create several unrelated-looking electrical faults, so scanning for additional codes is useful.

A Practical Diagnostic Example

Consider a vehicle that starts normally in the morning.

After driving for 30 minutes, the engine occasionally hesitates during acceleration and eventually stores P0233.

The technician replaces the fuel pump.

The problem returns.

The next step is to monitor pump voltage and current during a road test.

The voltage suddenly drops for a fraction of a second while the vehicle hits a bump.

Inspection reveals that the fuel-pump connector has poor terminal tension.

The pump was never the primary problem.

The electrical connection was.

This is exactly why intermittent circuit codes require evidence rather than parts swapping.

How a Technician Should Diagnose P0233

Start with the complete vehicle scan.

Look for fuel-pressure, engine-control, charging-system, communication, and fuel-pump-control codes.

Then inspect the freeze-frame data.

Next, identify the vehicle's exact fuel-pump architecture from the wiring diagram.

Determine whether it uses:

  • Relay control

  • PWM fuel-pump control

  • Dedicated fuel-pump module

  • ECM-controlled relay

  • Variable-speed pump control

Then test the circuit accordingly.

Check the pump's power and ground under load.

Perform voltage-drop testing.

Inspect connectors and terminals.

Monitor pump current where appropriate.

Check fuel pressure at the same time.

If the fault is intermittent, reproduce it under the conditions in which it normally occurs.

Finally, compare the electrical evidence with the ECM's recorded fault.

Don't Apply Power Randomly to the Circuit

Fuel-pump control systems are not all wired the same way.

Some systems have a simple switched-power pump.

Others use electronically controlled modules or PWM signals.

Therefore, do not randomly apply battery voltage or ground to a control wire just to see what happens.

The wrong test can damage a control module.

Always identify the circuit and follow the manufacturer's test procedure.

Can You Keep Driving With P0233?

It depends on how frequently the fault occurs and whether the engine is experiencing fuel-delivery problems.

A vehicle that occasionally stores the code but drives normally may continue operating temporarily, but the underlying fault should still be investigated.

If you experience:

  • Engine stalling

  • Severe hesitation

  • Loss of power

  • Hard starting

  • Sudden fuel-pressure loss

  • Repeated pump shutdown

continuing to drive can become unsafe, particularly in traffic.

An intermittent fuel-pump circuit fault can eventually become a complete circuit failure.

The Real Meaning of P0233

P0233 is best understood as a warning that the fuel-pump electrical system is not consistently behaving as the ECM expects.

The pump itself may be defective, but so may the wiring, connector, relay, ground, control module, or power supply.

The most reliable diagnosis comes from finding the moment when the circuit changes and determining which part of the electrical path changed first.

Final Diagnosis

When P0233 appears, don't start with a new fuel pump.

Start with the circuit.

Check the wiring diagram, scan the vehicle for related faults, study the freeze-frame data, verify pump voltage and ground under load, inspect connectors and terminals, and monitor fuel pressure and pump current when possible.

Because this is an intermittent fault, the most valuable evidence may appear only during vibration, heat, acceleration, or extended operation.

A fuel pump that works on the workshop floor does not necessarily prove that the fuel-pump circuit is healthy on the road.

P0233 is often solved not by replacing the most expensive component, but by finding the brief electrical interruption that nobody noticed.
