P0208 Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit Malfunction

P0208 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code that indicates the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected a problem with the electrical control circuit for the fuel injector assigned to cylinder 8.

In simple terms, the computer is trying to control the injector on cylinder 8, but the electrical behavior it receives from that injector circuit is not what it expects.

This does not automatically mean that the cylinder 8 injector itself is defective. The fault can be caused by the injector, wiring, connector, power supply, or the injector driver inside the engine control module.

The exact injector location and cylinder numbering must also be confirmed from the manufacturer's service information, especially on V6, V8, V10, and V12 engines.

What Does P0208 Actually Monitor?

A fuel injector is an electrically controlled valve. The ECM switches the injector on and off at precisely calculated times to deliver the required amount of fuel.

Depending on the engine design, the injector circuit may include:

  • Injector power supply

  • Injector control wire

  • Electrical connector

  • Engine wiring harness

  • Shared injector power circuit

  • ECM/PCM injector driver

  • The injector's internal electrical coil or piezoelectric element

When the ECM commands cylinder 8's injector, it monitors the electrical response of that circuit.

If the current, voltage, switching behavior, or circuit response falls outside the expected range, the ECM can store P0208.

The word “malfunction” is deliberately broad. Unlike codes that specifically identify a circuit as low, high, or open, P0208 can represent several different electrical abnormalities.

Why Cylinder 8 Is Important

Cylinder 8 is normally found on engines with at least eight cylinders, but the exact location depends on the engine manufacturer's cylinder numbering system.

On some V8 engines, cylinder numbering follows a particular bank-and-cylinder sequence. On others, the physical position may be different.

Therefore, it is not wise to locate the injector simply by assuming that “cylinder 8” means the eighth cylinder from the front of the engine.

Damaged injector wiring

The wiring between the ECM and injector can become damaged by heat, vibration, oil contamination, moisture, or physical contact with other engine components.

A wire may break internally while still appearing normal from the outside.

Poor injector connector

A loose, corroded, contaminated, or damaged connector can create intermittent electrical contact.

This is particularly important when the fault appears only under certain driving conditions or after the engine becomes hot.

Short circuit

The injector control wire can short to ground, battery voltage, another circuit, or another injector circuit depending on the wiring design.

Open circuit

A broken wire, disconnected connector, damaged terminal, or failed injector winding can interrupt the circuit.

Power supply problem

Some engines use a common power supply for multiple injectors. A problem in that shared circuit can affect several injectors at once.

ECM injector driver problem

The ECM contains electronic drivers that control the injectors. A damaged driver can prevent the cylinder 8 injector from being controlled correctly.

This is possible, but the ECM should generally be considered only after the injector, wiring, connectors, power supply, and control signals have been properly tested.

Symptoms You May Notice

P0208 can produce anything from a mild warning light to a severe engine-running problem.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Reduced engine power

The severity depends on whether cylinder 8 is receiving too much fuel, too little fuel, or no fuel at all.

On a large V8 or V10 engine, the driver may notice a strong vibration and obvious loss of power.

P0208 Can Cause a Misfire

A malfunctioning injector circuit can prevent the cylinder from receiving the correct amount of fuel.

For example, if the injector does not open when commanded, cylinder 8 may receive little or no fuel. The air-fuel mixture can then become too lean or the cylinder may fail to combust altogether.

If the injector remains electrically active for too long, the opposite problem can occur: excessive fuel may enter the cylinder.

This means P0208 can be accompanied by a cylinder-specific misfire code or other fuel-system codes.

However, P0208 and a misfire code describe different things.

A misfire code identifies a combustion problem.

P0208 Does Not Automatically Mean “Replace the Injector”

  • Poor ground or power supply

  • ECM driver

Replacing the injector without testing the circuit can therefore result in an unnecessary repair.

A Practical Diagnostic Approach

A good diagnosis begins with the complete fault-code picture rather than immediately removing the injector.

Start with all stored codes

Scan the vehicle and record every stored, pending, and manufacturer-specific code.

If P0208 appears together with several other injector circuit codes, this can be an important clue.

For example, multiple injector codes may point toward a shared power supply, harness problem, fuse, relay, or control-system issue rather than several injectors failing simultaneously.

Check the freeze-frame data

Freeze-frame information can show the engine conditions when the ECM detected the problem.

Look at factors such as:

  • Engine RPM

  • Coolant temperature

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine load

  • Fuel-system status

  • Battery voltage

If P0208 repeatedly appears at a particular RPM or temperature, the wiring or connector may need closer inspection for vibration- or heat-related faults.

Inspect the cylinder 8 injector connector

Look for:

  • Bent terminals

  • Loose terminals

  • Corrosion

  • Water contamination

  • Oil contamination

  • Broken locking mechanisms

  • Damaged insulation

  • Terminals pushed backward inside the connector

A connector can look perfectly normal externally while having poor terminal tension internally.

Inspect the wiring harness

Follow the injector wiring from the injector toward the main harness.

Look for places where the harness may have:

  • Rubbed against the engine

  • Melted against an exhaust component

  • Been stretched

  • Been pinched

  • Been repaired previously

  • Become contaminated with oil or coolant

Wiring faults caused by engine movement can be particularly difficult to find because the circuit may work normally when the engine is stationary.

Depending on the injector technology, technicians may measure resistance, current behavior, or the injector control waveform.

There is no single resistance value that applies to every fuel injector.

A conventional gasoline port injector, gasoline direct injector, diesel common-rail injector, and other electronically controlled injector designs can have very different electrical characteristics.

Therefore, a generic internet resistance specification should not be treated as a universal test value.

The correct specification comes from the vehicle or injector manufacturer's service information.

Comparing Cylinder 8 With Other Injectors

When the engine design allows it, comparison testing can be extremely useful.

If cylinder 8's injector electrical characteristics are significantly different from the other injectors, the injector itself becomes more suspicious.

On some systems, an injector can also be temporarily exchanged with another cylinder for diagnostic purposes.

If the fault follows the injector after the swap, that provides strong evidence that the injector is responsible.

However, injector swapping is not appropriate for every engine.

Some injectors require coding, calibration, specific installation procedures, new seals, or other precautions. High-pressure fuel systems also require particular safety procedures.

Checking the ECM Control Signal

If the injector appears electrically healthy, the next step is to determine whether the ECM is actually delivering the expected control signal.

The technician may use appropriate diagnostic equipment such as:

  • Oscilloscope

  • Current probe

  • Automotive test equipment

  • Manufacturer-specific diagnostic software

The waveform can provide much more information than a simple continuity test.

A circuit may show continuity with the engine switched off while still failing when the injector is being actively controlled.

Don't Forget Shared Injector Power

Many engines use a common electrical supply arrangement for multiple injectors.

This creates an important diagnostic clue.

If P0208 occurs together with codes for several other injectors, checking the shared power circuit becomes particularly important.

A failed fuse, relay, power feed, harness connection, or common splice can affect multiple injectors simultaneously.

If only cylinder 8 is affected, the fault may be more localized to that injector, its connector, its individual wiring, or its ECM driver.

This is not an absolute rule, but it helps narrow the diagnostic path.

What About Fuel Pressure?

Fuel pressure should not be confused with an injector circuit fault.

P0208 is primarily an electrical/control circuit diagnosis.

Low fuel pressure can certainly cause poor engine operation and misfires, but low pressure alone does not prove that the cylinder 8 injector circuit is electrically defective.

If other fuel-pressure codes are present, both problems should be investigated.

For direct-injection gasoline engines and diesel common-rail systems, fuel pressure can be extremely high, so testing must follow the manufacturer's safety and diagnostic procedures.

Could the ECM Be the Problem?

Yes, but the ECM should not normally be the first component replaced.

Before condemning the engine computer, the technician should establish that:

  • The injector is within specification

  • The connector is sound

  • The wiring is intact

  • The correct power supply is present

  • The control circuit is not shorted

  • The ECM has the required power and grounds

  • The ECM output is incorrect or absent when it should be present

Only after these checks should an ECM injector driver become a serious suspect.

On some vehicles, ECM replacement may also require programming, immobilizer synchronization, configuration, or injector-related calibration.

P0208 on Gasoline and Diesel Engines

The meaning of P0208 is broadly the same, but the hardware can be very different.

On a gasoline port-injected engine, the injector normally operates at relatively low fuel pressure and uses a conventional electrical solenoid.

Gasoline direct injection uses different injector technology and much higher fuel pressures.

Diesel common-rail systems can operate at extremely high fuel pressures and may use sophisticated electronically controlled injectors requiring coding or calibration.

As a result, the diagnostic procedure must match the actual injection system.

The same P0208 code does not mean that every vehicle should be tested in exactly the same way.

Can You Drive With P0208?

It depends on how severely the engine is running.

If the engine is running smoothly and the Check Engine Light is steady, a short trip to a repair facility may sometimes be possible.

However, driving for an extended period with a severe injector problem is not advisable.

If the engine is misfiring badly, the Check Engine Light is flashing, there is significant loss of power, strong fuel odor, unusual smoke, or the engine is stalling, continued driving should be avoided.

A severe misfire can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system and potentially damage the catalytic converter.

On some engines, an injector that leaks excessively can create additional engine and emissions problems as well.

P0208 vs. Cylinder 8 Injector Mechanical Failure

There is an important distinction between an electrical circuit problem and an injector that is mechanically restricted.

An injector can have a normal electrical circuit but still fail to deliver the correct quantity of fuel because of contamination, internal mechanical damage, or restricted flow.

Conversely, an injector can have a serious electrical failure while its mechanical fuel-delivery components remain physically capable of operating.

P0208 specifically directs the diagnostic process toward the injector's electrical control circuit, although mechanical injector problems can coexist with the electrical fault.

P0208 vs. Cylinder 8 Misfire

These codes should not be treated as identical.

P0208:
The ECM detected an abnormal condition in the cylinder 8 injector circuit.

Cylinder 8 misfire code:
The ECM detected combustion irregularities associated with cylinder 8.

A defective injector circuit can cause the misfire, but ignition, compression, fuel pressure, valve operation, or other engine problems can also cause a misfire.

If both codes are present, diagnose the injector circuit first while also considering the complete engine condition.

How P0208 Is Usually Repaired

The correct repair depends entirely on the test results.

Possible repairs include:

  • Replacing the cylinder 8 injector

  • Repairing damaged wiring

  • Replacing a damaged connector

  • Repairing loose or corroded terminals

  • Restoring injector power supply

  • Repairing a short or open circuit

  • Correcting a shared injector power problem

  • Repairing an ECM injector driver

  • Programming or coding a replacement injector where required

  • Replacing or programming the ECM when properly confirmed

After the repair, the code should be cleared and the vehicle tested under the conditions in which the fault originally occurred.

The technician should then confirm that P0208 does not return and that cylinder 8 is operating normally.

Final Diagnostic Perspective

P0208 is best understood as a cylinder 8 injector electrical-control problem, not as a direct declaration that the injector has failed.

The most effective diagnosis follows the circuit logically: identify the correct cylinder and injector, inspect the connector and harness, verify the power and control circuits, evaluate injector electrical behavior, and only then consider the ECM.

That approach prevents one of the most common mistakes with injector fault codes—replacing an expensive injector or control module when the actual problem is a damaged wire, loose terminal, or poor connector.
