P1202 Injector Circuit Open / Short Cylinder #2

The P1202 trouble code indicates that the engine control module (ECM/PCM) has detected an open circuit or short circuit involving the fuel injector for Cylinder #2.

This is an electrical fault code. It does not automatically mean that the injector itself is defective.

The injector may be perfectly functional mechanically while the problem is caused by a broken wire, loose connector, shorted wiring, poor power supply, or a problem with the injector control circuit inside the ECM.

P1202 is therefore best understood as a problem with the electrical path between the control module and Cylinder #2's injector.

What Happens When the Engine Runs?

A fuel injector needs an electrical command from the ECM to open at the correct time and for the required duration.

The basic process is:

ECM command → injector wiring → injector coil/solenoid → injector operation → fuel delivery

If the circuit is open, the electrical path is interrupted.

If the circuit is shorted, current can flow through an unintended path or exceed what the control system expects.

Either condition can prevent Cylinder #2 from receiving the correct amount of fuel.

The result may be a misfire, rough running, poor acceleration, increased emissions, or even an engine that will not run properly.

What Does “Open Circuit” Mean?

An open circuit means the electrical path is interrupted.

Imagine the ECM sends a command to the injector, but the current cannot complete its intended path.

Possible causes include:

  • Broken injector wire

  • Disconnected connector

  • Loose terminal

  • Corroded connector

  • Broken injector terminal

  • Internal injector coil failure

  • Damaged harness

  • Poor electrical connection

An open circuit can be permanent or intermittent.

A wire that is broken internally may make contact when the engine is stationary and separate when vibration or movement occurs.

What Does “Short Circuit” Mean?

A short circuit occurs when the electrical circuit takes an unintended path.

The injector circuit could potentially be shorted:

  • To ground

  • To battery voltage

  • To another circuit

  • Within the injector itself

The exact interpretation depends on the injector design and the vehicle's circuit architecture.

A short can cause excessive current, prevent the injector from being controlled correctly, or cause the ECM's injector driver to shut down to protect itself.

Why Cylinder #2 Matters

The ECM identifies the affected injector as Cylinder #2.

However, cylinder numbering is manufacturer-specific.

On an inline four-cylinder engine, Cylinder #2 is usually the second cylinder in the manufacturer's numbering sequence.

On V-type engines, cylinder numbering can be less intuitive.

Therefore, a technician should always confirm cylinder numbering and injector identification using the vehicle's service information rather than assuming the physical location.

Common Causes of P1202

Faulty fuel injector

The injector's internal coil or solenoid may have an open winding or an internal short.

An injector can also develop an electrical fault even if its nozzle and mechanical components are otherwise functional.

Damaged injector wiring

The harness may be broken, rubbed through, melted, pinched, or damaged during previous engine work.

The wiring near the injector is particularly vulnerable to engine vibration and heat.

Loose injector connector

A connector that is not fully locked can create an intermittent circuit.

The engine may run normally at one moment and develop a misfire when vibration causes the connection to open.

Corroded terminals

Moisture or contamination can increase electrical resistance or interrupt the injector circuit.

Short to ground

A damaged wire may contact the engine, chassis, or another grounded component.

Short to voltage

The injector control wire can potentially contact a power source because of damaged insulation or an incorrectly repaired harness.

Poor shared power supply

Some engine designs use a common power feed for multiple injectors.

If that shared supply has a problem, several injector codes may appear simultaneously.

ECM injector driver fault

The ECM contains an electronic driver that controls the injector.

A damaged driver can produce an injector circuit code even when the injector and wiring are functioning correctly.

This possibility should generally be investigated after the external circuit has been verified.

Symptoms of P1202

The symptoms depend on whether Cylinder #2 is receiving no fuel, too much fuel, or intermittent fueling.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Rough idle

  • Engine misfire

  • Engine vibration

  • Hesitation

  • Poor acceleration

  • Reduced engine power

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Difficult starting

  • Extended cranking

  • Engine stalling

  • Poor throttle response

  • Increased emissions

  • Flashing Check Engine Light

If the injector circuit completely fails, Cylinder #2 may effectively stop contributing to engine power.

A Dead Injector Does Not Always Mean a Bad Injector

This distinction is particularly important with P1202.

Suppose the engine is running on three cylinders and Cylinder #2 appears to have no fuel injection.

There are at least two possibilities:

The injector is defective.

Or:

The ECM is unable to electrically control a perfectly good injector.

If the wiring between the ECM and injector is broken, installing a new injector will not solve the problem.

Likewise, if the ECM injector driver has failed, replacing the injector and connector will not correct the underlying fault.

How P1202 Should Be Diagnosed

A useful diagnosis starts with the electrical circuit rather than immediately removing the injector.

First, scan all codes

Check for other injector, misfire, voltage, fuel-pressure, or engine-control codes.

If several injectors have circuit codes at the same time, a shared power supply or ground problem becomes more likely.

If P1202 is the only injector circuit fault, attention can be focused more closely on Cylinder #2.

Check the Freeze-Frame Data

Freeze-frame information can show the operating conditions when the ECM detected the problem.

Look at information such as:

  • Engine RPM

  • Vehicle speed

  • Engine load

  • Coolant temperature

  • Battery voltage

  • Fuel pressure

  • Engine operating time

  • Misfire information if available

If the fault occurs only at a particular engine speed or temperature, that can provide an important clue.

Inspect the Cylinder #2 Injector Connector

Before performing complicated testing, inspect the connector carefully.

Look for:

  • Loose terminals

  • Bent pins

  • Corrosion

  • Broken locking tabs

  • Damaged seals

  • Oil contamination

  • Water intrusion

  • Terminals pushed backward inside the connector

A terminal may look connected from the outside while failing to make reliable electrical contact with the injector.

Inspect the Wiring

Follow the injector harness away from Cylinder #2.

Look for areas where the harness may be:

  • Rubbing against metal

  • Touching the exhaust

  • Pinched under a bracket

  • Damaged by previous repairs

  • Stretched

  • Oil-soaked

  • Heat-damaged

Pay particular attention to sections that move when the engine moves.

An intermittent P1202 fault can sometimes be reproduced by carefully moving the harness while monitoring the circuit, provided the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure allows such testing.

Test the Injector

The injector's electrical characteristics should be tested according to the manufacturer's specifications.

Depending on the injector design, a technician may check:

  • Coil resistance

  • Continuity

  • Current draw

  • Control waveform

  • Injector activation

  • Mechanical operation

There is no universal injector resistance value that applies to every engine.

A resistance value that is normal for one injector design could be completely wrong for another.

Resistance Testing Has Limitations

A simple resistance test can be useful, but it does not tell the whole story.

An injector may measure normally when cold but develop an electrical fault when it becomes hot.

Likewise, a wire may show continuity when the engine is stationary but lose contact when the harness vibrates.

For intermittent problems, dynamic testing can be much more informative.

An oscilloscope or suitable injector-current test can show what is actually happening while the engine is operating.

Check the ECM Control Circuit

If the injector itself and its wiring appear correct, the ECM's control circuit should be investigated.

The technician may need to verify:

  • Injector power supply

  • Control-side operation

  • Driver command

  • Wiring continuity between ECM and injector

  • Shorts to ground

  • Shorts to voltage

  • Interaction with other injector circuits

The exact testing procedure varies considerably between gasoline port-injection, direct-injection, and diesel systems.

Gasoline and Diesel Systems Are Different

P1202 can appear on different types of engines, but the injector technology can be completely different.

A gasoline port injector, gasoline direct injector, and diesel common-rail injector do not operate in the same way.

Diesel injectors, particularly common-rail systems, can involve high fuel pressure and specialized electronic control.

A technician should therefore use the correct diagnostic procedure for the specific engine.

P1202 Can Cause a Misfire Code Too

If Cylinder #2 stops receiving the correct fuel quantity, the engine may develop a misfire.

The ECM may then store an additional cylinder-specific misfire code.

This does not necessarily mean that there are two separate problems.

The injector circuit fault may be the cause, while the misfire code is the result.

This is why diagnostic codes should be interpreted together rather than individually.

What If P1202 Appears With Other Injector Codes?

This can provide an important clue.

If you have:

P1202 only

A problem isolated to Cylinder #2's injector, connector, wiring, or control circuit becomes more likely.

If you have:

P1201, P1202, P1203, etc.

and several injectors show circuit faults simultaneously, investigate common electrical supplies, grounds, harnesses, or control-module issues before replacing multiple injectors.

A shared electrical problem can make several injectors appear faulty at the same time.

Can P1202 Be Caused by Low Fuel Pressure?

Not directly in the same way as an injector circuit fault.

P1202 describes an electrical problem involving the injector circuit.

Low fuel pressure can certainly cause poor engine operation or injector-related symptoms, but it does not normally explain an electrical open or short by itself.

If the vehicle has a fuel-pressure problem and P1202 at the same time, both conditions should be diagnosed rather than assuming one automatically caused the other.

Can You Drive With P1202?

Driving with P1202 is generally not recommended for an extended period.

If Cylinder #2 is not receiving the correct amount of fuel, the engine can run with a significant imbalance.

A severe misfire can increase exhaust temperatures and potentially damage the catalytic converter on gasoline engines.

On some engines, the ECM may disable fuel injection to the affected cylinder as a protective strategy.

If the Check Engine Light is flashing, the engine is shaking badly, or there is major power loss, the vehicle should be inspected promptly rather than continuing to drive normally.

Possible Repairs

The repair depends on what testing identifies.

Possible solutions include:

  • Replacing the Cylinder #2 injector

  • Repairing the injector wiring

  • Replacing damaged wiring

  • Repairing or replacing injector connector terminals

  • Correcting a short to ground

  • Correcting a short to voltage

  • Repairing a shared injector power supply

  • Repairing a ground problem

  • Correcting an ECM control-circuit fault

  • Replacing or repairing the ECM injector driver when confirmed

Injector replacement should be based on test results, not simply on the presence of P1202.

A Useful Diagnostic Shortcut

If the vehicle's diagnostic procedure permits it, comparing Cylinder #2 with another known-good injector circuit can be extremely informative.

For example, a technician may compare:

Cylinder #2 circuit ↔ another injector circuit

The goal is not simply to see whether two injectors have identical resistance. The goal is to determine whether the electrical behavior of Cylinder #2 differs from a known-good circuit.

If the problem follows the injector after an appropriate swap test, the injector becomes more suspicious.

If the problem stays with the Cylinder #2 wiring position, the harness or control circuit becomes more likely.

Such tests must be performed according to the injector type and manufacturer's procedure because some injectors and systems should not be swapped casually.

P1202 vs Injector Performance Problems

It is also useful to distinguish an injector circuit fault from an injector performance fault.

A circuit code such as P1202 primarily concerns the electrical control path.

An injector can have a perfectly normal electrical circuit but still have:

  • Restricted flow

  • Poor spray pattern

  • Internal mechanical wear

  • Leakage

  • Incorrect fuel delivery

Those problems may generate different diagnostic codes or simply cause a misfire.

Conversely, P1202 can occur even when the injector's mechanical fuel delivery system is not the original problem.

The Real Diagnostic Meaning of P1202

P1202 Injector Circuit Open / Short Cylinder #2 should be treated as an electrical investigation.

The key questions are:

Does Cylinder #2's injector have the correct electrical characteristics?

Is the connector making reliable contact?

Is the injector receiving the required electrical supply?

Can the ECM control the injector correctly?

Is the control wire intact from the injector to the ECM?

Is the circuit shorted to ground, voltage, or another circuit?

Is the ECM injector driver actually functioning?

Once these questions are answered, it becomes much easier to determine whether the problem is the injector, the harness, the connector, the power supply, or the ECM.

A P1202 code is therefore not simply a command to replace Cylinder #2's injector. It is a warning that the electrical path responsible for controlling that injector is not behaving as the engine control module expects.
