P1205 Injector Circuit Open / Short Cylinder #5
P1205 is set when the engine control module detects an electrical problem in the fuel injector circuit assigned to cylinder #5.
The important point is that this is a circuit fault. The code does not automatically mean that the injector is clogged or that the injector has mechanically failed.
The ECU expects the cylinder #5 injector to respond electrically when it is commanded. If the expected electrical behavior is missing or abnormal, the ECU can store P1205.
That can happen because of the injector itself, but also because of the wiring, connector, power supply, control circuit, or, less commonly, the ECU driver.
What Happens When the Injector Circuit Is Interrupted?
The injector is essentially an electrically operated valve. The ECU switches it on and off very quickly to control how much fuel enters the cylinder.
If the electrical circuit is interrupted, the injector may not open when commanded.
For cylinder #5, this can mean that the cylinder receives little or no fuel even though the rest of the engine's fuel system is functioning normally.
The result can be a cylinder-specific misfire.

“Open” and “Short” Describe Different Electrical Problems
An open circuit means the intended electrical path has been interrupted.
For example, the wire between the injector and its control system may be broken, a connector may be disconnected, or the injector's internal coil may be open.
A short circuit means the electrical current is taking an unintended path.
The injector control wire could, depending on the circuit design, be shorted to ground, power, another circuit, or a damaged section of wiring.
These two conditions require different diagnostic approaches. That is why simply measuring the injector and replacing it without checking the circuit can lead to an unnecessary repair.
The Most Useful Question: Where Does the Circuit Stop Working?
Instead of starting with “Is the injector bad?”, a better diagnostic approach is to follow the circuit.
Think of the injector system as a path:
Power supply → injector → control wiring → ECU
The exact arrangement varies between vehicles, but the principle is the same.
If power is missing at the injector, the injector itself may be perfectly good.
If power is present but the injector has an internal open circuit, the injector becomes a strong suspect.
If the injector tests correctly but the ECU's control signal never reaches it, the wiring or ECU control side needs attention.
This approach prevents the common mistake of replacing the most obvious component before proving that it is actually defective.
Cylinder #5 Makes the Location Important
P1205 specifically identifies cylinder #5.
This matters because the technician can concentrate on the injector and wiring associated with that cylinder rather than treating the entire fuel system as the problem.
On many V6, V8 and other multi-cylinder engines, cylinder #5 may be located on a particular cylinder bank. However, cylinder numbering is not universal across all manufacturers.
The exact location should therefore be confirmed using the manufacturer's service information rather than assuming a particular numbering arrangement.
Look Closely at the Injector Connector
The connector is often more important than it appears.
A connector can be plugged in but still have an electrical problem.
Possible issues include:

Loose terminal tension

Corroded contacts

A terminal pushed backward inside the connector

Broken connector locking tab

Damaged wiring immediately behind the connector

Oil or moisture contamination

Don't Forget the Shared Power Supply
Some engines supply multiple injectors through a common power circuit.
This creates an important diagnostic clue.
If several injectors show an electrical problem at the same time, the technician should investigate the shared power supply, fuse, relay, or common wiring before replacing individual injectors.
If P1205 appears by itself, the problem may be isolated to cylinder #5, but the circuit design should still be checked.
This is why the wiring diagram for the specific vehicle is more useful than relying on a generic injector circuit assumption.
The Injector Can Be Tested Without Guessing
The electrical condition of the #5 injector can be checked using the manufacturer's specifications.
Resistance testing may reveal an injector coil that is:

However, there is no single injector resistance value that applies to every engine.
Different injector designs use different electrical characteristics, so a measurement should always be compared with the correct specification.
A useful comparison can also be made with the other injectors when appropriate, particularly if they are the same type and operate under the same conditions.
What If the Resistance Is Normal?
A normal resistance measurement does not completely prove that the injector circuit is healthy.
An injector may test normally when stationary and cold but fail when:

The connector is disturbed

The engine reaches a particular operating condition
This is where dynamic testing becomes more valuable.
A technician can monitor the injector circuit while the engine is running and, where appropriate, perform a controlled harness movement test.
If the injector command disappears when the harness is moved, the wiring or connector becomes a much stronger suspect.
Watch the Injector Command
A suitable test light, noid light, oscilloscope, or manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment can be used to determine whether the ECU is actually controlling the injector.
The objective is not simply to see “voltage.”
The technician needs to determine whether the injector is receiving the correct electrical command at the correct time.
An oscilloscope is particularly useful because it can show the actual injector control waveform and reveal abnormalities that a simple multimeter may miss.
This can help separate:
bad injector
from
bad wiring
and from
missing or abnormal ECU control.
P1205 Does Not Automatically Mean a Fuel Delivery Problem
This distinction is important.
A clogged injector can cause a cylinder to receive insufficient fuel, but that is primarily a mechanical fuel-delivery problem.
P1205 points toward the injector's electrical circuit.
For example, an injector could have perfectly adequate fuel pressure and still fail to operate because its electrical circuit is open.
Conversely, an injector can have a perfect electrical circuit but still have poor fuel flow because of contamination.
These are different faults and require different tests.
Misfire Data Can Add Another Clue
If the vehicle provides cylinder-specific misfire data, it can be useful to see whether cylinder #5 is consistently showing misfire activity.
A strong relationship between P1205 and a cylinder #5 misfire supports the idea that the injector problem is affecting combustion.
However, misfire data by itself does not prove that the injector is electrically defective.
Ignition, compression, fuel pressure and other engine conditions can also create a cylinder-specific misfire.
The injector circuit still needs to be tested directly.
A Practical Way to Chase the Fault
For P1205, the diagnosis can be approached from the injector outward.
Start with the #5 injector connector and inspect the terminals and wiring.
Then establish whether the injector has the required power supply under the conditions specified by the manufacturer.
Next, test the injector's electrical characteristics.
If the injector passes, move further along the circuit and test the wiring for continuity and unwanted connections to ground, power, or other circuits.
If necessary, perform voltage-drop testing rather than relying exclusively on resistance measurements.
Finally, verify whether the ECU is producing the expected control signal.
This progression turns P1205 from a vague “injector problem” into a specific electrical fault that can be located.
Where the ECU Fits Into the Diagnosis
The ECU controls the injector electronically, so an internal driver failure is possible.
But it should usually be considered after the external circuit has been proven good.
Before blaming the ECU, there should be evidence that:

The injector is within specification

Its connector is sound
-
The required power supply is present
-
The wiring is intact
-
There is no unwanted short
-
The control circuit reaches the ECU correctly

The ECU is receiving the necessary operating information
Only after these checks should an ECU driver problem become a serious possibility.
When P1205 Should Not Be Ignored
If the injector on cylinder #5 is completely inoperative, the engine may be running with a severe misfire.
Continuing to drive in this condition can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system and potentially overheat or damage the catalytic converter.
A flashing check engine light, severe shaking, major power loss or stalling is a good reason to stop treating the problem as a minor warning and have the vehicle diagnosed promptly.
If the code is intermittent and the engine currently feels normal, the vehicle may remain driveable, but the electrical fault should still be investigated before it becomes a permanent failure.
The Repair Depends on What the Testing Finds
There is no single repair for P1205.
The actual fix might be as simple as repairing a damaged connector or wiring section. In another vehicle, the injector itself may have an open or shorted internal coil and require replacement.

After the repair, the fault code should be cleared and the vehicle tested under the conditions that originally triggered P1205.
The most important thing with this code is not to confuse “injector circuit fault” with “bad injector.” P1205 tells you that the electrical behavior of cylinder #5's injector circuit is abnormal. The diagnosis must then determine whether the problem is inside the injector, at the connector, somewhere in the wiring, in the power supply, or on the ECU control side.
